Girl l'm American and I've Never given or received directions saying head North, South, East or West and I've received directions locally and when traveling to other states. I'm sure it happens but l haven't experienced it. Most Americans don't have time for that. We're trying to get where we're going by keeping it short and simple. Turn right, go straight or go back 2 blocks and turn left etc. I'm in middle America and we keep it basic.

Moreover, can you imagine that a typical greeting involves cardinal directions, because it usually goes like this: "Where are you going?" "North-East-East. And you?" It is really amazing that children as young as 3 y.o. can answer immediately without thinking at all.

You´re right about the planning of the cities that allow the gringos to give proper directions when you´re driving around. But you know that the people in Europe changed (and it´s documented) after WWII. So much slaughter and destruction changed the soul.
