Natural Birthing - A Promise of Dignity in Birth | Dr Evita Fernandez | TEDxHyderabadWomen

What do you see when you walk into a government hospital? Women birthing in conditions that will make you shudder. Those women who have low risk pregnancies are being prescribed c-sections. A simple solution to safe and dignified birthing in hygienic conditions is the availability of trained mid-wives. In this powerful and emotional talk, Dr Evita Fernandez brings a message of empowering women with the right knowledge to enjoy a safe and positive birthing experience by being taken care of by a trained midwife, assured of a birth companion of her choice and the freedom to birth in the position she feels comfortable. Sharing heart-wrenching anecdotes from her professional life, Dr Evita's mission is as clear as it can get - let there be dignity in birthing for every woman! Dr Evita Fernandez is an obstetrician who believes in the need to empower women to make choices, especially with the issues surrounding birth. With over three decades of clinical experience, she is the Managing Director of Fernandez Hospital Foundation and spearheads 'PROMISE' - the 'PROfessional MIdwifery SErvices' campaign. Dr. Evita has participated in many forums focusing on the empowerment of women. She shuns the spotlight while focusing her positive energy on delegation, empowering, mentoring and specialization. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I have nothing but love and respect for Dr. Fernandez. I have said this before and I'll say it again. All obstetricians should be required to take midwifery training. Period. And if they don't pass the midwifery courses, they should not be allowed to become obstetricians. Also, midwifery training should be free of charge, especially in underdeveloped and developing nations because the world needs trained, competent midwives in order to greatly reduce maternal and infant deaths. United States hospitals, where babies are delivered mostly by obstetricians, have just about the highest rates of maternal and infant deaths in the industrialized world. Not only that, the C-section rates in US hospitals average 1 in 3, with some hospitals averaging much higher. But the countries with the best birth outcomes are countries where the majority of babies are delivered by trained professional midwives. I hate to say this, but if given the choice to birth in an American hospital, or any hospital for that matter where the maternity ward is not run by midwives, or to birth alone, I would choose to birth alone due to all of the unnecessary interferences and procedures that go along with birthing in a hospital with obstetricians. I feel much safer with the thought of doing it on my own, as opposed to doing it with a care provider who is not properly trained.

I was reading the diary of a midwife from the 50’s. A girl who was in labor was being modest and the midwife said “ Hun, forget it. There is not dignity in childbirth” unfortunately that is true now.

I’m in the states with my first at 34 weeks. I want nothing more than to birth at the ONLY birthing center in town but my insurance won’t cover it. My partner, doula, and I are preparing for the best physiologic birth possible considering (and I will labor at home for as long as possible). 🤰🏻🐣💜
