Mind Your Own Pregnancy! | Leslea Walters | TEDxWinnipeg
Women are subjected to the unsolicited opinions of random strangers whose comments typically serve only to create unnecessary anxiety. Given advice founded purely in myth and old wive's tales, these women have enough to deal with, considering the normal physiologic changes of pregnancy! Leslie will set straight some myths, offer reassurance and tips for a healthy pregnancy and also make people aware of what they CAN say! Dr Leslea Walters is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, having trained as an Obstetrician/Gynaecologist. She sees patients in her downtown practice, delivers babies at the Women’s Hospital (Health Sciences Centre) and operates at various hospitals around Winnipeg. She has been in practice for 5 years and prior to that completed residency training at the University of Manitoba, after graduating from medical school at the University of Ottawa. Her interests are quite varied and she will tell you she ended up in medicine “by accident” after a brief career as a flight attendant. Fortunately, it has been a good fit for her and she finds it fulfilling to serve her patients with a wide range of women’s health concerns.
Leslea has led her colleagues in several community based initiatives to advance women’s health. Her next endeavour is to take on the role of Section Head of Obstetrics at the Women’s Hospital - HSC. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I really needed to hear this. As a housewife and immigrant in a country where my husband is my only family, receiving mean comments and unsolicited advices is just making me overthink and not helping with my mental health. Next time someone says these things, imma be like “My doctor says I’m doing great!”

This is a great talk, very well presented, being 6 months pregnant myself I can completely relate. My only criticism is, it ok to say pregnant woman. The constant use of the term “pregnant person” plays into the erasing of women and is one of the greatest forms of misogyny that we are now complicit in every time we say “pregnant person” instead of pregnant woman. I am a woman, that’s my superpower.

I feel almost guilty, reading about so many women having these problems. Maybe I should feel more blessed instead about my relatively easy pregnancy so far. I didn't have much morning sickness, just a bit of dizziness, and I certainly had to cut down on working extra hours because I get much more easily tired. I think every pregnant woman is scared of things that could go wrong, or some complications in delivery. Beyond the known things what not to do, one can only pray that things shall go well.

I am five month pregnant and needed to hear the message at the end. The only way out is through.
All day sickness, insomnia etc...yup that´s me. The tabou around those *real* "drug side effects", seriously people have too much unsollicited opinions... I am happy to be able to document my journey on my platform. EVERY PRENANCY is different.
Beautifully explained ..
The "can I offer you a seat"...at the end of my pregnancy I was so happy walking and pacing, that I actively declined having a seat. I said: just a chair when I want, but please let me pace. I was so tired, but I could not stand sitting down. I was full, restless, I just needed to walk. A minute sit down, and that was it. I needed movement. I was a different person when I was pregnant.
this made me cry :‘) wonderful speech! I learned a lot, thank you
Pregnancy is a means to an end. I’m 13 weeks pregnant with my first and holy moly I absolutely hate being pregnant. Every symptom under the sun. All day and night sickness. Just taking it day by day. I love my kids very very much, but being pregnant is something I hate and love at the same time. When I’m pregnant there’s nothing else I want to do than lay down on the floor with a cup by my side for the spitting. I’m sorry but when I’m pregnant I feel awful always vomiting days and night, I never have morning sickness only days and night sickness for nine months straight. Never really enjoyed my pregnancies between the critics from my family and my own struggle. The only encouragement I get when I’m pregnant is from my doctor truly only him. People who don’t know what being pregnant is always have something to say and just because you have been pregnant doesn’t mean that you know what someone else is going through with their own pregnancy

I’ve always wondered why we are restricted to eat or drink certain kinds of food but drown us with all sorts of drugs during labor to take away pain and discomfort. Doesn’t that affect the baby more than my regular mild coffee everyday? And when asked a million times when my baby is coming out, are these people also going to be asking how our children are doing? are you going to be part of our lives until the end? will you be there when we need you?

38 weeks tomorrow. this was great until the birth discussion. birth is not always painful and not everyone enters with fear. wish we could change the language around birth. if we tell people fear and pain are a part of it then OF COURSE they will be a part of it. i trust my body and my baby and am not afraid. and im open to the experience - many women have non-medicated pain free births, and some (few) even have orgasmic births. just sayin

I didn't realize how painful birth was until my 1st. The pain was literally traumatizing. I wish people would of been honest with me and not given me BS about how beautiful birth is. What a lie. It was the most traumatic thing I have ever been through and that was 24 years ago now.
It is unfair to say a pregnant woman can work who knows how long... this should be her own choice. Because of this statements woman get maternity leave a few weeks before delivery. That is not enough!!! A woman should be on maternity leave as soon as she feels that day to day activities are not manageable. She should focus on her healthy diet, physical activity and good state of mind which is in 80-90% NOT POSSIBLE WITH 8H JOB + TRAVELING TO WORK TIME! I'm shocked when a woman gives this kind of statements after she mentioned so many not so great things which pregnancy brings. SHAME.

Epidurals are much safer and more controlled than they used to be--- Now you can get a button with which you control the drip, from "almost totally numb" to "almost no medicine at all" I had one for my twins and it was ***WONDERFUL*** Having it applied is a bit scary, but it can make heavy labour so so SO much better. At one point we were distracted and I forgot to hit the button for a long time and went from "very low pain" to "full heavy labour" It was such whiplash that I couldn't think or function and the nurses were all trying to figure out what was wrong. Until the anesthesiologist came back in, looked at me, and hit the button herself, lol...ahhh! Blessed relief within a minute!
I love this. People have turned such a natural procese so cringe.
