NATO's Big Announcement: New Support Could Shift the Ukraine Conflict

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced increased support for Ukraine, highlighting long-term and predictable financial aid from NATO allies to meet Ukraine's arms needs. The US is preparing a record $6 billion military aid package, including Patriot and NASAMS missiles, artillery shells, Switchblade and Puma drones, and more. While this aid may not drastically change the battlefield's balance, it will help stabilise the situation for the Ukrainian army. Experts believe this support could prevent a prolonged Cold War-like conflict and is vital for Ukraine's success against Russian aggression.

Indeed, russia is the aggressor here invading their peaceful neighbor. The only consideration they deserve here is to plans on how they are kicked out of Ukraine back to russia. They can stay there in peace. Threatening escalation seems pretty stupid, when russia has started a war where there are around 1M soldiers on front lines and around 600-700 thousand casualties so far.

I am a bit mad at NATO. They still hold back with supply! AFU bleeds because we are not fully commited to their victory! They are losing experienced soliders who are willing to defend their land and we still think about sending them OLD jets or some tanks. Russians have thousands of tanks and we are cheering for manging to send them some 30 modern tanks... it is insulting to be honest. I dont give a ... about prices rising. We WILL withstand that. We are not in direct danger. And we wont be if Z army dies in Ukraine. There wont be any nuclear war. We need to think that Z oligarchs care about power and money. They are not going to commit suicide just because of their miscalculated invasion. If they had Japanse logic of honor and shame then I would be slightly worried. But russians never heard of honor in their whole history...

The long course of debate regarding what kinds of support each nation is willing to provide Ukraine has had both good and bad results. On the bad side, it has allowed Russia and its axis (Iran, Belarus, North Korea, and to some extent China) to use mass assault tactics to overwhelm the smaller but much more skillful Ukrainian army in select locations. These unnecessary losses are regretable, and indeed were completely avoidable, had the collective free world not dithered while the fire burned. On the other hand, the long course of the war has helped resurrect a failing European commitment to self-defense. This has only partially been realized however. There are still large swathes of the body politic in Europe who do not understand that their world is under threat, and still go about their daily lives as if it's somebody else's problem to solve it. So the longer this conflict lasts, the harder it is for them to pretend it isn't happening. And that is an important real effect of the war getting longer and longer. Also, the continuing grinding down of Russian materiele by a long and protracted conflict, makes Russia less and less of a threat day by day. Considering Putin's imperial aims, this is unquestionably a good thing. I suspect that Western leaders are supporting Ukraine in such a way, that they can draw out the conflict as long as possible, in order to drain Russian, Iranian, and North Korean miltary resources which have accumulated over the years, as a strategic method, thus transforming it from a military conflict, into an economic contest of technology and production, which clearly favors the free world. And that is a good thing as well.

It's about time that Jens Stoltenberg quit vacillating about what NATO and EU countries should or shouldn't do. If they had been decisive from the beginning Russia would have crawled out of Ukraine during Ukraine's first offensive. That should be the one question that all would be leaders should ask themselves: "do I have the balls to say we go to war?" This is not assuming the leader is male; when I learned that I didn't have any I bought brass balls and they have not let me down. If the mere thought of war turns their guts to jello than they should be a follower not a leader.

A new Cold War is coming. It will involve both Russia and China. I miss the old Cold War. I got to do a lot of cutting edge research with unlimited funding. One thing the US could do is to station a large number of troops in Europe again. At the height of the Cold War the US had 500K troops facing off against the Soviets. Until the end of the Cold War this number was about 300K. The current deployment should be of the order of two heavy mechanized corps. They should be stationed in Poland, the Baltics and Scandanavia. That would present Putin with a dilemma. It would also have the added benefit of making recruiting in the US easier.

The warmongers/troublemakers in the U.S. and Europe loudly champion a narrative that if Ukraine loses the war, the rest of Europe will automatically/inevitably face Russian aggression. This childish/unsophisticated tactic reminds me of Saddam Hussein. When he invaded Kuwait, in an attempt to ward off the American-led military punitive operation, he often used the phrase " the mother of all wars". By this bold and dramatic statement, he naively expected to instill fear and show his resolve. We know the end of the story.
