Mal so, mal so.

Genau das ist mir heute auf dem Wasser passiert. Zum Glück konnte ich mit dem Paddel steuern und zurück an Land kommen. War aber mühsam, da das Rudder voll eingeschlagen war, als es gerissen ist. Danke für das Video!

I had the same issue with the stock steel cable. Also had a ton of slop and binding in the steering with no way to really tighten it up from the rear drum once it is in place. Just a poor design. So I removed the steel cable and replaced it with some Hobie Spectra rudder line. I modified the steering drum and the rear drum similar to the BerleyPro so I could tighten the lines with the drum installed. It got most of the slop out but not the binding. Those rudder cable tubes make a hard angle in the back. I thought about cutting the rudder tubes at the angle and putting some harken pulleys in-line, but that’s not an easy area to get to. So I was looking at scrapping all of it and trying to do a stick steer style single push/pull cable like what you might find on a small jon boat. There’s GOT to be a better solution!? I also have the Boonedox rudder- great upgrade. Native should re-brand it and use it, or mod their plastic rudder to copy it.

Well I thought so that there are more yak fishers with the same problem. But in my particular case since I’m just turning the drawing below the steering handle by 180° I do not have any further issues with it. Before I tighten the screws on the line, I fix the rudder and the steering handle with tape before tighten the screws in the back. There might be a little slack left and I think you need it because otherwise the steel wire cable becomes a saw and cuts your stern into pieces. I know from the manufacture that they are working on a solution by using some kind of a braided line but I’m not sure whether this will work because of that sharp angle in the back that you have mentioned. You may aluminate all the slack in the line and have an absolute direkt control of the rudder. But the leader end still is plastic material and will be cut sooner or later if you have too much tension on the line or the cable whatever it will be in the end. To make it work with some braided line or such, you would need an SIC ring like it is on your fishing rod. It is possible to do that this might be some future music for me. I just received my brand new FX 13 and will leave it the way it is for now Besides turning the drum. I will check it out how long the steel wire cable will do it’s work but I believe I won’t have anymore problems with it.

I went through many cables on my Titan and a few on my lighter Slayer before I realized that you can reposition the set screw in the handle assembley to reduce the cutting action on the cable. With your rudder centered, look to see where your handle is. If the handle is in line with the frame of the Yak, you are going to cut a lot of cables because the set screw is at the top of the pulley where all the stress is as you steer. Remove the screw on the bottom and push the two pieces apart, rotate them so that the set screw is on the lower left side. Now most of the stress will be on the pulley rather than the set screw. Since I did that, my cables last ten times longer.

Great idea indeed. Native has put an eye on that subject and is working on a general update to solve that cable problem. Let’s see what they come up with. My favorite would be some power cord and a pair of Fuji guided rings in the back like on our rods. Otherwise I will do it myself that way to make ist bomb-proof. Thanks for dropping a line...

@@SilentHunterYakfishing I heard the same thing 5 years ago when I bought my Slayer yet Native has never addressed this cable issue and seem to not want to hear from their customers as you cannot talk directly to them. Dealers take all the complaints yet never seem to act on them.

Hi there, of course you can and you have to if you want to change the cables. You need a tiny little hex wrench to do it. Some of my yak buddies however changed to a power cord. That’s the kind of thing that Native Watercraft uses for their kayaks for about a year or so. I have it on the titan 12 and there is no issue with the steering ever since. You do not need to buy an upgrade cable on that, but check Amazon for “Dyneema” , You will find the right thing like this one: HTF - Dyneema Pro Tauwerk Seil 2mm - 15m, Geflochten, Carbon Grau www.amazon.de/dp/B079TP62Q1/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_PnCvFbA3W15EZ So they should have something equivalent at your marketplace. For the correct diameter you should measure the tubes but it should be something around 1.5 mm. I think the steel wire cable has 1.3 mm. To do the upgrade yourself, you need to come up with another idea to fix the power cord to the rudder tiller because the screw that squeezes the steel wire cable is not appropriate to do it with the power cord. But that is an easy task to do to drill a hole into the tiller and use a screw, washer and nut. To get an idea you may have a look to KZread, where they show the upgrade just to get the idea. Love to hear from you....
