TL:DR
Super Chinese is great at what it does... except the developers seem to be confused as to what that exactly is. I didn't feel like there were any special "AI" functionality within the app, however, the app has an excellent library of animated stories (which they also confusingly named "texts") that incorporate the target vocabulary. Like many apps, grammar is still a weak point, and the speech recognition is ridiculously strict to the point of being impossible to get a perfect score. Overall, it is an engaging app that is suited for people who wish to learn in context of everyday conversations.

    I'm relieved to know that I'm not the only one frustrated by the speech recognition in Super Chinese. It's quite strict. It actually polices tones. Compare that to the speech recognition in Duolingo which definitely isn't policing tones. This is my #1 app for PRACTICING SPEAKING because I know it won't take no BS from me.

    Thank gosh, Vietnamese has six tones so 4 tones of Chinese not a big problem to me and after a half year using SuperChinese, my pronunciation score stays 86~97. Guys, it is totally helpful and worth your time!!! I reach HSK4 level thanks to it. Just study hard. Dont need to be perfect, be better time by time!!!!

    One of my favorite parts about the speech recognition feature is that it's super strict. It makes you speak clearly, at a steady pace, and loudly. It's more suitable for learners than native speakers. I experimented with it a lot and found that if you speak closer to the mic, you'll get a higher score. It will catch some background noise, but it will still more easily isolate your voice if you are closer to the mic and don't take long pauses.

    Yeah at max I've got a 99, it never gives you a 100% score for speaking. I've suggested them to change it from scores to just words like pass, good, great, excellent. (just like at the end of the lesson)

    Thanks for the review of Super Chinese. I've been studying with it for more than a year, but overall I've been studying Chinese for two now. As an English teacher, I realized early on that we need to focus on oral skills (learning to recognize and understand what we hear and learn how to speak). My tip for those using this app would be to focus on pinyin and make use of the sentence translation. Then, from level 2 on turn off sentence translation and read the sentences and try to understand it. In the early lessons, you can in the vocabulary section turn translation so you know the meaning straight away. However, in the grammar and text sections, turn them off. You can always click on the word you don't know to review the meaning. Super Chinese present new language through meaning-based stories. Once I have done the full level focusing on oral skills, I redo the level again without pinyin and translation and focusing on connecting speech to characters. I rarely use their writing function to practice. But that is mainly because I haven't made an effort to learn how to handwrite them. In fact, when interacting through technology, we need to be able to recognize the correct character in order to select it correctly。 As for grammar, I agree with the reviewer. I still have trouble trying to create sentences on my own. For example, I would like to say: I hope my comment helps. I wonder if I simply can say: 我希望我的回答帮助你。

    ps, speach recognition always gives me 60-80 points, so if you got 90 it means you're way better, but nobody gets 100 even if you are native, haha so I do not worry about that much, as long as it says i got it right,

    Thanks for your review! I was one of those asking for it. After using it for 8 months, I want to share what I find it useful and what I think you hit right on the head as my subsequent weakness. Grammar! It's great for learning new words in context, like you said. As far as speech recognition, I discovered if you wait a few seconds before you start recording, it picks up your speech better. I was constantly missing 我。Then I realised it was nearly every first word of a sentence. The pause corrected that. I think it's my phone. And I'm happy to know that I don't suck as bad as I thought if it scored you like that! Wow. You should get 100. I consistently get 95 at the highest on my pronunciation, but I know I'm probably speaking Mandarin with a Texas accent. The sections in the "textbook" sections in the knowledge bank on PINYIN are excellent, and that's where the AI kinda shows better. It the study section, or main lesson part, it will also fling you back randomly now for a suggested review of previous lessons. That was a slap in the face! To find out how much I forgot from a month ago made me almost quit! And it will keep drilling you on what you miss in these reviews. The app should hire you! You have to pretty much figure out what's in there on your own. Overall, though, learning the words in context has helped me. My weakest point after this many months is grammar! Any suggestions on a method I could use since I'm self taught? I've been writing sentences out and comparing literal word order in English to Chinese. I know of the Grammar Wiki, which I consult. But I'm kinda making up my study course on my own. I know lessons where I'm actually speaking to someone and coming up with my own sentences would help the most. IF you read this, thank you for your time!

    i do use super chinese and i actually like it, but as you said the grammar is basic, i also find it a little confusing when i knew some phrase composition is correct but the app says nop it's not you lost points, and then i need to redo the whole lesson again which i know i didn't need to. i agree that is a great app, the given vocabulary being shown in context and conversations is a great resource and i think more appa should use it, but for grammar... i recommend studying outside the app

  • @KatiePrescott

    Wow thanks for this really in depth review! I absolutely love SuperChinese, been using it for over a year now :) I definitely agree with you that it is more of an app-based textbook / story based app rather than AI based, although I guess the AI is referring to the speech recognition and personalised review features. More of a marketing thing tbh, I guess "AI powered learning" and "gamification" are big keywords... Note on the speech recognition/ rating - it's a bit unreliable, you kinda have to separately enunciate every character (including separately reading out every 儿 which obviously then sounds very unnatural), and it struggles if you speak too fast or too soft. I kinda don't bother too much with it, just use it as a way of encouraging me to read out loud more and ignore the rating. Also on the grammar points, this is probably one thing I disagree with you on haha - I like the super short and simple explanations, and the app focuses more on giving you real examples of how the grammar is used, which I feel is easier to understand and remember than reading a long convuluted explanation (although tbh I'm using SuperChinese more as review rather than learning from scratch). My main "complaint" with the app is simply that they are kinda slow at releasing more lessons, and currently are just moving into HSK5 level content - I already passed HSK5 half a year ago, and it's a shame that the app will probably only ever be useful as review/ generally keeping up my Chinese.

  • @KatiePrescott

    @KatiePrescott

    @@missc6826 I had already spent a year studying in China before I started using SuperChinese, so for me it has just been for review and consolidation. I've found it very useful for practicing grammar and reading out loud, obviously for more general conversation practice you're going to need to practice with real people. Ultimately, I'd emphasise that it's impossible to master a language just from one app or learning method. I use about five apps daily just for general review/ practice (each focuses on different skills, has a different style or puts grammar/vocab into a different context), plus I used to take live classes (a year of full time university classes, and even once I stopped intensive studies I still had some sessions with an italki tutor and some online language schools every week), and I also practice often by messaging and calling my Chinese friends.
