Native American Activists Occupy Alcatraz - Drunk History

In 1969, Native American activists used their right to take over abandoned federal land to occupy the island of Alcatraz.
About Drunk History:
Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

My grandpa is Adam Fortunate Eagle, and boy does he have some incredible stories of what happened. Him and my grandma were even targeted by the fbi and were named enemies of the state in California, even to this day LOL.

Native Americans really got it bad in our nation's history. So many broken promises.

They should have just let the native americans keep it. They were putting it to better use anyways.

Glad they covered this! Another piece of American history that is neglected and should 100% get more recognition both in schools and media!

The national park page for Alcatraz is pretty icky when they talk about this. They ignore that the native Americans did have a legal cause to occupy the island, make them sound like they weren’t too organized (a bunch of students) and call them exclusively use the term “Indians”.

I had the honour of working with John Trudell at various times in the '90s. He was very inspiring. I'll never forget his speeches and the private time with him and his family. I hope he is at peace now.
