On Wednesday, House Intelligence Committee Chair Mike Turner relayed information related to what’s being described as a “serious national security threat” to members of Congress. Unnamed sources cited by CNN confirmed that this notification pertains to what “is, in fact, a highly concerning and destabilizing” Russian capability “that we were recently made aware of.”
Let's talk about what this threat may be, and whether or not you should be concerned.

please they said the same about North Korea years ago. It was a scare tactic for more military spending and aid to South Korea and Japan. Back then it was about setting it off over the USA and 50% of the population dying because electric lines would be fried. It’s worth noting that when people talk about “destroying our entire orbital infrastructure” they aren’t considering how different orbits work. What Alex is taking about with the Kessler syndrome is a relevant threat to Low Earth Orbit (LEO), this is where things like the space station, high resolution imagery satellites, and Starlink are. Things in LEO are moving very fast and crossing each other’s orbits a lot, which makes it easy to think about a chain reaction happening. However, everything is at slightly different altitudes and it’s harder than people generally think for a chain reaction to occur. There’s also Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), where GPS and other navigation systems live. MEO orbits are around 22000 km up, compared to about 200-2000 km for LEO. Up here there’s just way more space and far fewer spacecraft, and the Kessler syndrome is not a relevant threat. Then we have geostationary orbit (GEO) way up at 35700 km. Up here we have things like military communications, weather satellites, and TV and radio spacecraft. These tend to be very large spacecraft, and as Alex said they are very fragile and generally considered not defendable, but again not because of a Kessler syndrome issue. They’re just big spacecraft that weren’t intended to defend themselves because they’re so high up we didn’t think it was needed for a long time. TLDR: Space is not one single place, the Kessler syndrome is a far less relevant threat to things like GPS and geostationary communications, and talking about “destroying all space infrastructure” oversimplifies how different orbit regimes work. Just my 2 cents, I’m a huge fan of Alex’s journalism and thank you for keeping us informed on defense topics!

Also, the threat of a nuclear emp attack against satellites is that it would basically just brick them en-masse. Maybe some fall out of orbit form lack of station keeping, but this wouldn't cause a kessler syndrome as they would basically just keep going in their obits in one piece. A kessler syndrome occurs from a satellite being smashed to bits and sending shrapnel all over LEO to hit more satellites and so on. The nuke would have to actually directly destroy satellites to cause this. But space is big and satellites are far enough apart that using a nuke just means you need slightly less precise targeting systems to score a direct hit vs a conventional anti-satellite missile. Maybe if you time orbits right you can get two or three in one go, but how is that any different form just launching two or three conventional anti-sat missiles anyway? Honestly, the only bit about this threat that is new is the idea to pre-position the nuke rather than launch it as needed, presumably to prevent intercepting it. ICBMs already reach low orbit on their normal flight trajectories and we've had smaller conventional anti-sat missiles for a while.

Good video. I especially liked how you pointed out that the US did these tests in the 60's. We (and the Russians...and several other powers) could do this all along. We didn't need a new weapon to do it. To me, this is on par with the Russian's claims for their tsunami nuclear autonomous killer torpedo...it's something to scare people, especially in the West, even though regular nuclear weapons could always do this anyway. And even though doing so would be an act of war, that would bring about a nuclear response exactly as if they nuked a city. It isn't surprising that Russia would, again, play this card...or even, sadly, that the Republicans (or a faction of them) would use this to try and bolster their anti-Ukrainian aid stance or stoke fear in the general public who don't realize that nothing has really changed. Definitely a thumbs up on this video!

@@mcamp9445 I assume you are talking about a cobalt-jacketed nuclear device. A device first tested in the 50's. IIRC, while the initial radiation is very high (quite a lot higher than a regular nuke), it would drop off within 70-100 years. Of course, detonating such a nuke would be WWIII, so the radiation in the ocean and the resultant tsunami would only be a small part of the issue at that stage. And that's the point...assuming Russia actually has a working example of this (I'm skeptical), using it would be like using any nuke, and would carry with it an all-out nuclear engagement.

" A {insert NATO platform here} can {insert desired outcome here}, we did it on a test range in the {insert year}. The statement forgets that in full out war, this asymmetry would be brought to bear, so all previous guestimations should be duly ignored. This isn't to say that the insert-platform cannot do 'insert-outcome here as they once did on their insert-test-range', but that is to say that in the grand scheme of strategic doctrinal behavior (NATO's "Combined Arms" vs Russian "Total War") the human mind is drawn to the fact, much like what infuriated the british nearly 3 centuries ago, is that the other should/will play by the same rules... I think the special military operation is changing a lot of high level responses and doctrines this very moment ;)

The lack of access to the highly classified domains limits what KZreadrs can publish, nevertheless this was a decent summary. The underlying assumption that DOD didn't anticipate comparable threats is incorrect. "The Nuclear Detonation (NUDET) Detection System (NDS) provides a worldwide, highly survivable capability to detect, locate, and report any nuclear detonations in the earth's atmosphere or in near space in near-real time. NAP improves existing NDS capability and was integrated onto GPS Block IIR satellites 5 - 13. DOD also funded the development of the EMP sensor for the Block IIR . Additional funding was provided by a separate, classified PE that funded development of the version of the EMP sensor which will be integrated on the Block IIF beginning with Space Vehicle 7. The EMP sensor observes endoatmospheric events and provides highly accurate location and characterization." (US Budget Documents) Without touching on the classified domain, it would be reasonable to assume these critical US military war fighting satellites are not glass house, rather they are closer to hardened battle stations designed to operate while providing target class BDA during a nuclear confrontation.

One thing to consider is that a detonation like this today would either knock out or blind every system able to track ballistic missiles. Missile tracking satellites would be dead or out of comms, over the horizon radars would have immense interference, It would immediately look to every nuclear power on the planet like someone was performing a first strike and the odds of that turning into global nuclear exchange should not be discounted.

  • @Doh1962

US high priority satellite systems are in orbits at about 22,000 miles and are hardened against nuclear EMP. Low orbit recon satellites and STAR link would be devastated. This would affect everyone's satellites. The US maintains spare satellites in orbit and has spares ready to be launched and it would be possible that the US already has emergency back up satellites deployed on Minuteman III missiles on alert or even on Trident submarines.

    2 ай бұрын

@@MrDJAK777 @teaser6089 #Doh1962 Depending on the altitude of the detonation and size it may not matter how hardened or distant satellites are. You are entirely correct that most of the critical satellites for the USA are in GEO including missile tracking IR satellites. But there is nothing stopping Russia from detonating such a weapon in Geostationary orbit over the USA. In fact you could argue that's the best way to employ such a system. As for AEW or Tactical Jet observation that only works within the radar horizon and up to a specific altitude. AEWs cannot see into space they have little reason to look very far above themselves since their mission set is to fly high. If the missile is launched from anywhere other than the border with NATO then no asset other than Satellites or OTH radar will see anything. I'd hazard that if Russia were to deploy such a weapon offensively they would launch it from Baikonur or another space launch site to disguise its mission until its too late. The bigger issue there though is comms. If such a system were used then there would be no reliable way to get such launch data to NORAD or the White House in real time which hampers response options and further increases the risk of a miscalculation. Finally this is all assuming the USA is responding. China, India, Pakistan, the UK, and France all have early warning systems (Albeit for Pakistan its not exactly a robust system) and they would all be affected as well in a worst case scenario. If they don't know with certainty that Russia was using the weapon to harm the US they may well start firing at each other especially for India and Pakistan. All I'm saying is that this would create a very very dangerous scenario where a miscalculation is very possible.

Europe is not a unified entity. If we are talking in broad strokes western Europe is not pulling their weight. The issue with supporting Ukraine for Europe is that the manufacturing capacity just physically isn't there due to the cold war ending and budgets being cut. It's true that a lot of European countries like France and Italy have stalled a lot and haven't contributed nearly as much as they should though. If Europe had to support Ukraine alone right now there would be only one way of actually doing that and it would involve disarming active duty units and just praying that manufacturing can catch up before it becomes a security issue.

I saw the United States Government's Antigravity on August 30th 2023 at 9:10pm on Indiana highway 446. The craft was 40 feet above me moving west to east and it had a slight rotation northward. It is a triangle shaped craft with lights in the corners and center with navigation lights red and green with strobe lights. It is a smooth edges with access panels highlighted similar to the new stealth bomber. It is painted gray with a lighter color accenting the access panels highlighted. it was steady in it's movement like it was sliding down hill with no noise. When it moved by I didn't hear any noise from the craft from inside of my car and it didn't shake a leaf of the trees as it skimmed over themit had the same color and type of paint job that the United States Government's airplanes use. The access panels highlighted with gray as the main color. The access panels were in the stealth style of technology that the United States Government used on known programs. It had the required red and green lights used in aircrafts flying in the sky. It was a huge craft triangle shaped and flat. It was too flat to have enough lift by heated gas or any other gases to keep it floating around. It didn't have conventional thrust moving it forward because it was skimming the trees and it didn't shake a leaf. It was traveling west to east with a slight rotation northward without changing direction and the front end of the craft didn't have a cutting edge on the front of it. It was constant on it's edge being rounded and slightly concaved on the bottom. It was only 40 feet above my vehicle and I felt no air wash from the massive craft above me... It was a totally solid panel craft and with the amount of weight it was it would have required a lot to keep it aloft it's motion and speed would indicate it was not a blimp or conventional thrust. It's shape would not be a conventional air plane or blimp. I was 40 feet away from it... I got a good look at itThe black triangle is seen as black because of the way light works. The one I saw was gray with access panels highlighted and a slight concaved bottom like the space capsules and cones on the corners like other military planes. It's planels were like the new stealth bomber design and the lights were bright white with a blue hue. It had strobes and a spot light. It was a very huge craft the sides were smoothly rolled and the whole thing was smoothly rolled... It wasn't blocky. It looked like it was designed by Northrop Grumman because of it's access panels I'm sure they hold patent rights on. It was in a direct pathway where I saw it between two of their facilities and where most of the sightings happen with the triangle shaped craft happen close to Northrop Grumman facilities... I am trying to investigate it now because they decided to disclose it to the public through sightings... They had to know they would be seen by vehicles. There was a vehicle behind me that saw it too... I reported it to the state police department and when I called at that point I was the only person reporting it. The officer asked if it was doing any harm and at that point I realized he wasn't going to log it. I checked WBIW police logs for the day and it was not there. I did also make a report to Mufon later and I have been posting a statement to as many as I can with similar topics.

LEGEND!!! 🏆 Great to have an _OBJECTIVE_ view which can be reposted 🙂 As others have said, brilliant sponsor too… PS Yes, the politics of this is irresponsible.

Hi from Australia Alex. We have our own bureaucratic version of Hell down here called the Dept of Veterans affairs (DVA) who seem to love nothing more than a grammatical or spelling error in the paper work to avoid paying out or at least slow the process down. (A bit tough considering we are using a half chewed crayon to do the paper work) I would love to find out how successful you are with your link (Just the numbers) or some success stories (Names redacted of course) Cheers.

Maybe there wouldn't be so much gossip if the government didn't classify everything, including information about our enemies that we might need to prepare for...
