Guess I am really old. I go back to the days of Manx. Back then I wanted a Manta. Now, I am looking at a replica of the Allard. It is much better looking than the old Lotus 7 design.
Terrific video - Steve is great, very genuine. More please, going into each maker one at a time, specs, prices, business owners etc.

Steve, I am here in the States, but wishing I were over in the UK. You have fewer restrictions than we have over here. 50 years ago, l was in my 20s and in love with the British sportscars. I, at different times, owned two MG-MIDGET'S & one Triumph Spitfire. However, marriage and six children made an end to that. But, I wouldn't do it differently because my family has always meant more than cars to me. And, now that I am older, I wish I could obtain an upgrade of the MG-MIDGET, but this time, I would love an all electric MG with a fiberglass body so it wouldn't rust as the original models were prone to do. Thanks for the video tour of the Kit Car convention!

The nearest I could suggest is Hall Garages offer a Frogeye Sprite kit based on a Midget, replacing a lot of the steel panels with fibreglass ones.

If only he had kept it as a RS2000 he would be quids in...
A great insight into the modern Kit car industry! It is a shame it has narrowed down to just a few replica vehicles, from the multitude of one off specials we got thirty years ago! Plus the much more practical models such as the Rickman Ranger, The Quantum & others! I suspect that the people who are looking for practical classic cars are now tending to go to places like the boys at Restopower for Mk 2 Escorts etc. or highly modded Allegros or Morris 1000's!

I think you are right, but also back in the day kits could be a cheap option for some people as bodies on production cars rotted out fairly quickly. But now cars are a lot more durable. Apart from the electronics. And Range Rovers...
Great vid... Really enjoyed that. Shame the show isn't bigger !

Glad you enjoyed it. Its a reflection of the current scale of the industry. The move to Malvern has given the show a shot in the arm so hopefully the few manufacturers that weren't displaying will be there next year.

@@oscarsgarage447 Its a shame that many of the successful replica kitcar manufacturers now only market their products through the classic car scene. It might be a reflection of the classic scene now accepting high end replica cars as the real ones aren't affordable by the relatively wealthy would be owners ! At the same time the would be owners of the real cars don't understand the current kitcar scene in the wider sense and that quality products are now the norm. There is still plenty of work for the industry to do to convince both the trade and potential buyers to attend our events.

Hi, tell me why have they changed it from the stony agricultural ground to the three counties ground? Not many people know it’s been changed. 😮😮😮😮😮😮
@oscarsgarage447
Ай бұрын
The scale of the show had shrunk so Stoneleigh was no longer viable. This was due to less manufacturers to exhibit, the parts traders had been decimated by the internet, and also reduced club attendance. It was lost in that big showground. Malvern fits the scale of the show and has seen an increase in exhibitiors. It would be great to see more club attendance and camping though. Location wise the Malvern also is a nice pairing to the Newark show in September

There was one called the Challenger back in the 80s/90s of which quite a few were sold. But E type prices then dipped so they were no longer viable.
What happened to those manufacturers that didn’t build ‘sports’ related kits, for those who wanted to build a simple classic car for themselves ?
@oscarsgarage447
Ай бұрын
Unfortunately a combination of cheap sportcars (Z3, MX5 and SLK for example) and the cost of building a kit car knocked a lot of those manufacturers out of the market. Probably closest is the Quantum LMR141.

Why do all the Cobras have a Chev engine? What’s the matter with a small block or big block ford ? They are a sweet engine !
@oscarsgarage447
Ай бұрын
You can have a Ford engine (and the Coyote is used in some) but it's a combination of things. With having to put the cars through IVA as a new vehicle you have to meet strict emission criteria and the Chevy package is an easy way to achieve it, also a lot of owners are looking for modern reliability. But ultimately the great thing about kit cars is you can have what you want.

Really enjoyed this video, but the manufacturers who are closed door on who they will sell a kit to are not helping the industry. They may be happy to let their brand die out on some false sense of integrity, but that sells us all down the river
@oscarsgarage447
Ай бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it, but I think you have misunderstood what they mean. Some manufacturers, and bear in mind they have a long waiting list for kits, want to make sure any buyer understands what they are committing to as they want to see their cars finished to a good standard, not left part built. There is nothing closed door about any of these manufacturers, they will all welcome you with open arms.

Lots of the older kit cars that looked like kit cars have faded away into the history books and are unlikely to return. Modern kits with modern running gear are on a par with mainstream manufacturers with regards to quality and engineering standards and represent the future. The replica scene has been embraced by mainstream manufacturers such as Jaguar, Aston Martin etc etc who have been bringing out " continuations" models in recent times. The replica kit car market has done this for years, again with modern running gear in a classic car shape, these cars are very real ! I'd rather have a modern Cobra or GT40 replica than an original, they are better cars on so many levels than designs that go back 50 years or more .
Try speaking without waving your arms about all the time. REALLY ANNOYING
