"The Star-Spangled Banner" is the national anthem of the United States of America. The lyrics come from "Defence of Fort M'Henry",[2] a poem written on September 13, 1814 by the 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships of the Royal Navy in Baltimore Harbor during the Battle of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812. Key was inspired by the large American flag, the Star-Spangled Banner, flying triumphantly above the fort during the American victory.
The poem was set to the tune of a popular British song written by John Stafford Smith for the Anacreontic Society, a men's social club in London. "To Anacreon in Heaven" (or "The Anacreontic Song"), with various lyrics, was already popular in the United States. Set to Key's poem and renamed "The Star-Spangled Banner", it soon became a well-known American patriotic song. With a range of one octave and one fifth (a semitone more than an octave and a half), it is known for being difficult to sing. Although the poem has four stanzas, only the first is commonly sung today.

For those who don't know, our national Anthem is depicting the valiant battle of Fort McHenry against the British in the war of 1812. Where the bodies of men all around who fought to keep the flag flying to signify that the Fort was still ours. The anthem is a visual description of American defiance against overwhelming odds and certain defeat.

I live in Michigan. We used to sing this anthem every morning in middle school, but not anymore for high school. I sometimes wonder why.
This song is meant to be sung by a chorus, not an individual. It is our union, beyond skin color, religion, and lifestyle. The US truly has something special, even if it doesn’t feel that way sometimes. Every word of this Anthem should be taken to heart and treated like fact, not opinion. May Freedom Ring Forever!

@@gabbyisyogirl69 The third verse is not problematic. The verse is written to emphasize the will of the American people, as it doesn’t matter if you have nothing to fight for, you will still lose. There have been a couple articles written on “John Locke’s racism”, although I’m not sure you know he was a lawyer and fought to end slavery. The fact you clicked on the national anthem to respond to someone liking it, just to call it racist, really says a lot more about you than anyone who enjoys this song. And by the way, the verse isn’t even in this version of the song, although I think it should be in all of them. I hope you find the freedom and love this nation was built to instill in you.

I come from Hungary, and the fact is that almost everyone in our country loves America. We are a small nation of barely 15 million, but barely 9.5 million of them live in Hungary. In 1920, Hungary was shamed and humiliated, 72% of its territory was handed over to its greedy neighbors. In 1914, Hungary was not in an independent decision-making situation, as Austria-Hungary was part of the Monarchy and the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph decided to enter the war. The Hungarian Prime Minister tried all legal options against Hungarian entry into the war, but in the end the Prime Minister had to bow to the Austrian Emperor, who was also the Hungarian King. We went to the losing war on the orders of the king, not of our own accord like the Austrians and Germans. We Hungarians, with a kind of divine providence, sensed that there would be trouble, which is why we opposed it, and unfortunately history vindicated us years later. The Germans lost barely 13% of their territories, while those of us who wanted to stay lost 72%. Our unscrupulous, greedy, evil and envious neighbors have seized areas that were all Hungarian in majority but at least had a highly mixed population. In 1900, Budapest was the 2nd largest meat industry center in the world and the first in Europe. Only Chicago surpassed Budapest in both sectors. Between 1867 and 1914, Hungary underwent unprecedented rapid development, industry, agriculture, railway lines and the road network also underwent serious development. In the Carpathian basin, Hungarian acted as a mediating language. We did not oppress anyone, there was no forcible assimilation effort, anyone who wanted to could learn Hungarian. For the last 100 years or so, they have been trying to assimilate Hungarians and stop Hungarian education. Slovakia, Serbia, Romania, and Ukraine are leading in all of these. Transylvania, which now belongs to Romania, currently does not have as many Romanian schools as it did when Transylvania belonged to Hungary until 1920. So the Romanians were not oppressed, but more developed than even now. In Serbia and Romania, 5 years after the change of country, you can read about many complaints that the people are getting poorer and their standards are getting higher. Plus, the Hungarian circulation gold money has disappeared. It was silver, but they also had a lower silver content. 10 years after the change of country, there was already a clearly visible decline in living standards and infrastructure. After all, not only the more money, but also the expertise left along with the previous higher salaries. Let's imagine that someone who now takes home, say, $3,000 a month, will only take home $1,000 for the same work next month. The standard of living has very seriously drifted into a much poorer bed. This makes it easier to understand why people became poor. Neither in wages nor in many other areas could Serbia and Romania put as much money anywhere as was needed. The buildings, the railways and the road network just fell into disrepair, because there was no money not only for level maintenance, but also for minimal maintenance. Of course, the people who lived there didn't even think about this in 1920, it was too late years later when they felt that the change of country meant a serious existential setback for the members of the family. With a population of 1 million in the world, we Hungarians have so far given the world the most Nobel laureates, two last year as well. One of them lives here in America, Katalin Karikó, who received the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 2023. Previously, Leo Szilárd created the atomic bomb, Ede Teller created the hydrogen bomb, and János Csonka and Donát Bánki were the inventors of atomizer or diesel vehicles. János Irinyi is the inventor of the match - a chemist. József László Bíró is the inventor of today's modern ballpoint pen that does not smear the paper. The car is also a Hungarian invention, the first one was made in the Hungarian village of Kocs. A few more Hungarian inventions: low-level laser therapy, Bánki turbine, dynamo, Eötvös pendulum and effect, Heller-Forgó cooling device see the ancestor of refrigerators and air conditioners, holography - holographic imaging, image disk, ceramic, Rubik's sphere and cube, nuclear weapon - yourself we also created the word, telephone announcer, telephone switchboard, transformer and the inventor of the modern computer are named after János Neumann. Imagine our world today without computers, laptops, tablets?? Furthermore, a capacitor with variable capacity, an electric consumption meter, and the electric motor. Nicola Tesla was also born in Hungary. These are just a few examples without claiming to be exhaustive. Not to mention the fact that if Hungary was not torn to pieces in 1920, it would now be a larger and more populous country than Poland. It could be a country of 50 million. Such a country could provide serious help to Ukraine, both economically and militarily, so less American aid would be needed. But many small "successor states" cannot produce the strength of the former Kingdom of Hungary. So it's no wonder we're scattered all over the world.

Happy 4th of July, everyone! It saddens me to see how divided our nation is right now, but giving up won’t do us any good. Let’s focus on owning up to our mistakes and repairing our flaws, while also not losing sight of the progress we’ve made so far. Let’s also maintain a moderate sense of patriotism, so that we may be motivated to create a better future for ourselves and for future generations. May we strive to make the USA an authentic land of the free and home of the brave. 🇺🇸

Dear America, I can't tell you how much I love you. I beg you to stay proud and strong, in spite of the crises you have to face. Never forget your roots and never erase your great history. America, you are the daughter of brave men, who created a nation built on a universal claim to human dignity, on the proposition that every man, woman, and child had a right to a future of freedom. My love affair with you began when I was a young boy. I'm 20, now, and I adamantly know that somewhere inside me is germinating the vague idea that, someday, I will make common cause with you and your warm people.
