    I revisit this free skate often for the emotions and just the demonstration of mental fortitude that this then eighteen-year-old demonstrated, vaulting himself from seventeenth place after the worst short program of his career to fifth place by winning the free skate with this incredible effort of technical prowess. He was not nearly at the level here of what he is today, but this was really such a thunderous turning point in his career. And he went on a month later after the 2018 Olympics to become the youngest World Champion in men's figure skating since 2001. And then four years after the short program of his career, he performed the best short program of his career, which also happened to be the most technically difficult short program ever skated at the Olympics, en route to Olympic gold.

    Only six men in the history of figure skating have won the World Championships at the young age of 18. They are: Dick Button (U.S. 1948), Don McPherson (Canada 1963), Jan Hoffman (Germany 1974), Alexei Yagudin (Russia 1998), Evgeny Plushenko (Russia 2001), and Nathan Chen (U.S. 2018). Nathan was so consistent in his career that he has the 5th highest win rate for men in international competition in the history of figure skating. His win rate over his six-year career is 73% or winning just over 7 out of every 10 international competitions. In his last five years, he lost only two competitions for a win rate of 88%. In his last four years with three undefeated seasons, losing only once, Nathan's win rate was 92%. Only four men in the history of figure skating have a win rate higher than Nathan, and they're basically the men who invented modern figure skating. They are: Dick Button (U.S. 92%), Ulrich Salchow (Denmark 80%), Gillis Grafstrom (Sweden 78%), and Karl Schafer (Austria 74%), then Nathan Chen (U.S. 73%). Nathan is in the Top 5 figure skaters of All Time. The only men above him are the gods of figure skating who have 8 Olympic gold medals and 25 World Championships between them...and then Nathan. What an incredible accomplishment. He is the most-winning men's skater since 1952. If you're curious as to who rounds out the Top 10, after Nathan in 6th is Scott Hamilton (U.S. 71%), Evgeny Plushenko (Russia 67%), Alexei Yagudin (Russia 58%), Hayes Jenkins (U.S. 58%), and David Jenkins (U.S. 50%). Anything above 50% is considered a winning career because you win more than you lose. Eliminating David Jenkins with 50% (equal wins and losses) only 9 men in the history of figure skating have had winning careers where they dominated their eras, and Nathan was more dominant than all but four of them. And Hanyu? He had a VERY inconsistent career, winning just 17 international competitions out of 41 in his 12-year career. That gives him a 41% win rate in international competition. That means he only won 4 out of every 10 competitions for a losing record. He ranks #14. In fact, of the four men who have ever won multiple Olympic gold medals (Button, Grafstrom, Shafer, and Hanyu), Hanyu is the only one to not rank in the Top 10 most-winning skaters of All Time or to have a winning career.

I heard on a newscast that between the 2018 World Championships after these Olympics and the SP for the 2021 World Championships where he missed his quad lutz (three years) that Nathan Chen did not fall in 120 jump attempts in competition. Astounding.

    TIME magazine called Nathan's 2018 Olympic LP "the greatest comeback in figure skating history", and that's so true. No one else has the talent and technical power to launch themselves 12 placements up the boards from 17th to 5th and WIN the LP at the Olympics over Hanyu by 18 technical points and nearly 9 points even after PCS was added, except Nathan Chen. He's a legend, and the greatest there has ever been, proving it time and again over the next four years with three undefeated seasons and an Olympic gold medal.

    Watching this in 2022 and damn, he's improved so much over those 4 years. Artistically he's on a totally different level now, but also his skating skills, transitions or even the sheer quality of his quads are so much better (even though he typically does 4-5 now and not 6, they look so much more solid nowadays). He might not have been ready then, but he surely is now. Hoping he manages to get that gold this time around.

They made it seem like he was the overwhelming favorite when in fact if Hanyu skated anywhere near his best he was still the best skater in the world and even Javier and Shoma were better all around skaters it's just that Nathan had the better year but it was a strange season where most of the top men were either injured or skating below par.

    This remains my favorite program of Nathan's after watching him thru two Olympics. Even tho he won the Gold medal last night skating to Elton John's "Rocket Man", nothing beats the beautiful artistry and choreography of this program. And the skating perfectly melds with the music. After this skate, I felt Nathan's programs and choice of music veered into a different direction. I understand his need to change and grow as a skater, but this program is still my personal favorite and may never be topped by his other programs.

    @@rameseychristiandelarosa6285Having watched a few more of Nathan's recent programs, the "not artistic" rap he gets is only relative to Hanyu's skates. I wasn't a big fan of either skater before the Olympics and I must say Hanyu's style is breathtaking when he's "On". It's also comparatively more "feminine" compared to Nathan's style, and when I say feminine I don't mean that in any derogatory way. Nathan's skates from the last two years are visibly more masculine. People and critics are naturally leaning towards Hanyu's style and find it more artistic. It has more flow and soft movements compared to Nathan's.

    Great program, I wish he'd skate it now, it suits him so well. But seriously, cutting his curls off was a crime. Already had lots of "artistry" at this point - he skated this program at the Rostelecom Cup in 2017, and it was beautiful (it was beautiful here too, but for obvious reasons he seemed more relaxed at the Grand Prix, even though his jumps weren't all clean). He was clearly nervous and super focused here. His "Nemesis" program was great as well: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y6qAuLyafpy_mJc.html (He performed this in front of freakin' Tatiana Tarasova, basically at the start of his senior career, which for me honestly would've been more nerve wracking than the Olympics).

    @@rameseychristiandelarosa6285 True. Excessive theatrics have been the bane of fs for many years, imo. I don't mind them per se, but not when people think that's the only acceptable way to express yourself in this sport. Personally, I think Nathan is one of the most versatile skaters in history (give him any music and he'll probably kill it). Keegan is also one of those skaters who is pretty artistic with his own style, without being theatrical, but no one hates him. Funny how that works.

    He only didn't win because of his nerves in the SP. It had nothing to do with his artistry or ability to skate. In fact, he WON the LP at the 2018 Olympics by a big 18 technical points over Hanyu and nearly 9 points overall even after PCS was added. Hanyu was VERY lucky to win in Peyongchang, and he knows it---especially since just four weeks later Nathan posted a score at 2018 Worlds that BEAT Hanyu's Olympic total, and Nathan wiped the ice with Hanyu for the next four years, never losing to him again, crushing him at the '19 Worlds and '19 GPF, '21 Worlds, and '22 Olympics by 22, 44, 32, and 49 points.

  • @L1623VP

    @L1623VP

    4 ай бұрын

    @zlea8347 Whether I like the program or not isn't relevant to the fact that Nathan did more than enough in and with it artistically and athletically, as evidenced by his LP score, to win the Olympics if coupled with a strong SP. I disagree with you in the comparison you made with Plushenko in that Nathan's LP here is "only jumps and arm movements." He's giving more than that. At the same time, you really are talking about the Olympic Games, too because you said yourself that it was "very good he did not win there" in 2018, seemingly making the claim that Nathan didn't win because of his "skating skills" and the LP choreography. I simply said neither of those things mattered in his odds of winning. It was his nerves in the SP that was the deciding factor, not the LP because he won that portion of the competition handily regardless of how you perceive the choreography and his execution of it. Is Mao's Last Dancer my favorite LP of Nathan's? No, the music is too abstract. I'm also not a fan of Lori Nicholl's choreography for men, but that would be the case no matter who skated this LP. Again, my point is that Nathan did more than enough with it to win the Olympic gold if not for the SP nerves, and that performance remains good enough for me.

    @@ayblablabla...typical, recycled crap you're all taught to memorize about Nathan. How ignorant and sour you sound. Sorry, but the sport is changing, putting more emphasis on the jump elements now. Either you evolve too or you can sit out. Nathan is only doing what is required to win(difficult jump elements), just as Yuzuru and other greats followed their rules during their times in order to win. Don't like the rules? Take it up with the ISU. As for Nathan's artistry, child, you are more than welcome to prefer another skater. Opinions. You can like your boring, old-school, traditional skater if you have no clue how to appreciate someone who is truly a skater of this generation. It's nice to know you care enough about Nathan to want to "see" what he's doing. BTW, your favorite skater is more than welcome to change federation to the same one as Nathan's. He still won't win.

    Gawd, here you go again. You seem to be a broken record. I'll give you credit for changing your narrative slightly but it still reflects your displeasure that Nathan is now the 2022 Gold Medal winner and whoever you are obsessed with isn't.

And more other sponsors did the same plus 5 Japanese companyes even Shoma and Yuma were in competition. Canon was ISU partner from about 10 years and it seems they weren't so much touched by nc participation and "potential" 🙂

    Couldn't win? He won the free skate! Had he performed at his usual standard of those days in the SP, he would hv also won the Gold 4 years ago already. Overscored? How? Got it, your favorite skaters are always underscored and skaters u hate r always.overscored. Still can't get over the fact he won the Olympic gold this year with his impeccable performances so came back here to trash him here? Pathetic.
