Kothalawala's "Natando" I was sent a pre-promotional video of the dance show “Natando,” presented by the Rasika Kothalawala Dance School. Rasika Kothalawala, who graduated with first-class honors in local dance from the Colombo University of Fine Arts and Performing Arts, founded the Rasika Kothalawala Dance School in 1990 with only a few students. Ten years later, he held his first dance festival at Rajamaha Temple in Kelaniya for his initial six students. His ambition to transform the art of dance into a life skill and to pass it on to a new generation led to the rapid rise of his dance school to a prestigious position in Colombo, training over 250 students simultaneously. The Rasika Kothalawala Dance School made its public performance debut in 1998, eight years after its inception, at the Maradana Tower Theater with the show "Salaru." Kothalawala has consistently demonstrated his mastery not only in upcountry, lowcountry, and international dance forms but also in costume design and playing various musical instruments. The trailer video suggests that he is poised to deliver another exceptional dance experience to the public with his students. Sri Lankan traditional dance has a rich history. Audiences familiar with performances by artists such as Chitrasena, Vajira Chitrasena, Premakumara Epitawela, Panibharatha, Rajini Selvanayagam, Piyasara Shilpadhipa, and Khema Shilpadhipha will likely find Kothalawala's work a continuation of this tradition. The trailer hints at the enduring ability of these audiences to appreciate nuanced dance performances. Key Features of Sri Lankan Traditional Group Dances: Costumes and Makeup: Traditional Sri Lankan dance costumes are elaborate and colorful, often featuring intricate beadwork, sequins, and mirrors. Makeup enhances facial expressions and contributes to the visual impact. Rhythmic Accuracy: Dancers maintain impeccable timing and synchronization, crucial for group formations and patterns. Traditional percussion instruments dictate the rhythm, essential to the performance's flow and energy. Graceful Movements: Known for their fluid and graceful movements, Sri Lankan dancers display flexibility and control, executing each gesture and step with elegance. Facial Expressions: Dancers integrate expressive facial movements to convey emotions and narrate stories, a hallmark of skilled performance. Symbolic Gestures: Many dances incorporate symbolic hand gestures (mudras) and postures, which have specific meanings and enhance the storytelling aspect. Cultural Themes: Traditional dances often depict historical events, religious stories, and folk tales, reflecting Sri Lanka's history and cultural values. Live Music: Live traditional music, played on instruments like drums (especially knot drums), flutes, and cymbals, enhances the authenticity and immersive experience. Energetic Percussion: Central to the performance, percussion provides rhythm and tempo. The complexity and energy of the drumming patterns showcase the performers' skill. Audience Interaction: Traditional performances often include elements of audience interaction, engaging them in the storytelling process. Examples of Sri Lankan traditional group dances include the dynamic upland dance, characterized by its leaps and spins, and the more ritualistic and shamanistic lowland dance. The vibrant and energetic Sabaragamu dance also embodies many of these elements. Recognizing these markers helps appreciate the depth and richness of Sri Lankan traditional group dances, highlighting their importance in cultural preservation and expression. - Anuruddha Lokuhapuarachchi
