Natalie Merchant with Jen Turner, Live 1995, Earth Day - FULL SET

Музыка

Natalie Merchant 22nd April 1995, with only the 2nd live performance from her new band. Featuring the great Jen Turner on guitar. Quality is poor but an improvement on what I've seen out there before. It's also their complete set: Carnival, Wonder + ?

I've been playing guitar for a long time and love beautiful phrasing over shred. So today I finally looked up who played Carnival as it's a perfect example of fantastic guitar work. Jen Turner should have been huge, she's the whole package.

This video makes me think there was a literal conspiracy by the music industry to downplay female instrumentalists. Nothing else makes any sense and I am not usually one for conspiracy theories (or accusing people of gender bias for that matter) but I'll call a spade is a spade. Female instrumentalists exist, so SHOW THEM!

Loved seeing Jen Turner's face light up with a huge grin when playing Baby I love you. She's really letting herself go & enjoying doing a playful song. She always keeps a serious, almost stoic appearance when doing a song off Tiger Lily. Plus the funky rhythm/lead sort of style she's laying down is great. 16+ minutes of pure magic from a band doing only their second public performance.

    Jen Turner licks and riffs motivate by purity & motivate to experience PRS guitars, Wonder starts with the purest inspirational, playful butterfly-like tapping&bending, 3 notes/beat, 2 notes/beat, 3 notes 1 rest/beat, 3 notes 1 rest/beat, 2 notes/beat, then 2 triads, 1 note 1 bend, 2 notes/beat

What a great capture. I can't get over how young Natalie looks... I was 10 years old and obsessed with her. Now I'm 39 and they all look 15 years old.... singing songs that are now legendary. And today, they'd have to be shaking their bare asses to have the same fame they have here. Everyone would be on their phone. Here, everyone is present, and engaged. Makes me long for this time

This was great to watch. Almost 20 years ago - how time flies! IMO Jennifer Turner's performance on Tigerlily was simply epic. I don't know where Natalie found her but that was a great artistic collaboration. Listen to her parts on I May Know The Word. Just unreal.

Jennifer Turner's guitar playing on 'I May Know The Word' reminded me of the late Paul Kossoff (best known for his work with Free).I can't really pay her playing a higher compliment than that as Paul Kossoff was the most soulful guitar player that I have ever heard-he played with so much feeling and he made every note sound as if he really meant it.It is a great shame that we haven't heard a lot more from Jennifer Turner over the last couple of decades.

There are other similarities, as I feel that 'I May Know The Word' is, in many ways, reminiscent of my favourite Free song 'Come Together In The Morning'. Quite different songs, but it is the beauty and feeling of the guitar solos, the wailing Hammond organ sounds, the booming basslines and the soul and emotion in Natalie's voice (as with Free's Paul Rodgers) that make me love those songs so much.

Seems like the script flipped. I voted Jorgensen 2020 so no tie to either establishment, authoritarian party. Just my observation.

It's a great tribute to one of the rarest talents I've had the privilege to see & listen to. (over & over). Wish she had exploded into a major force in rock with her solo career & we had an inexhaustible collection of her gifted creative riffs and heartfelt playing. She left us with only a tease of her gifts & the potential for reaching even greater heights.

I was there, but two blocks away working on a Airflow AC unit on the front of a television semi trailer. It was running so hot, I didn't dare shut it down. Brushed the condensers, and emptied two bottles of nitrogen, to blow the coils out. I asked them to bring it by our shop, for a more through cleaning Monday morning. They never showed. They gave me a huge wad of cash to pay for the Sat. Service call. My work was surprised when I turned it in Monday. It was too much money, so I got a nice tip, plus my OT. Not sure who was playing on stage at that time of day.

Love Natalie's voice and singing style. Especially love her writing on Tigerlily. Needed a real producer to recognize the amazing talent of Jennifer Turner though. So painful to listen to the soulless, aimless plinking of that pianist when we could be hearing Turner guiding and carrying us along. Her drumming skills are evident as she adds percussive strums and pics within her bluesy, slow hand, sassy leadwork.

There's a camera right in front of her, you can see it on the long shots - someone in the editing room decided to use that other footage instead. I think there's only a couple of shots in this whole video that focus on the musician during a solo, even though the footage had to have been available to them. I noticed the same thing during the piano solos, which I also would have liked to see being played; but I *really* wanted to see Jen at work.

Love "Wonder" but this was 20 years ago and today she no longer has Jen Turner. Her voice is still good, but it's just not the same. Then again what is...20 years later?

I was looking to see if anyone else noticed that the damn camera seemed to spotlight other musicians and even the audience when Jen was playing solos! Seems she was ignored! Makes you wonder! I just discovered this week who the amazing guitar player was Natalie's Tigerlily album and have looking up any videos I can find of her performing.

Natalie is a class act,,,Love her writing her voice, she moves well onstage.. But let the political comments go.....your an artist, entertainer.,Outside of your songwriting, keep those "opinions"(which can come back to bite you) to yourself...or become a "real politician" where you can have real influence.... BTW, Jen Turner is a good guitarist, nice phrasing. .
