Good reaction my man. Thank you! I crushed on Natalie back in the day... Big time.
Great reaction and you have beautiful eyes 🥳
I adore this woman ❤
This is the song that made me become a Therapist and Social worker, I was that child…

I hid from my father under the basement stairs.
I lost my son @ 15 months old in 1985 to epilepsy. How can someone abuse their own child ? I only wish i still had my boy, I'm 62 now & cry whenever i hear this.
Build a levee - Natalie merchant ❤
She has the best female voice ever!!!! number 1 in my book.
You are a good man
Such a sad song and eye opener! I can’t listen to this song without getting emotional and all teary🥺
This is my all time favorite band. Thanks for the reaction. Sad Natalie left the band.
Got to love Natalie. Completely underrated.
You're absolutely right Highly. You set up a song like that, it's going to be rough to listen to emotionally. Natalie was always one for poignant lyrics exposing our societies weaknesses. How she made them so beautiful is beyond me. Love her so much.
I fell in love with The Maniacs in college. Yes, way back in late 1980s. So many of their songs are amazingly deep. Check out Dulce Et Decorum, a musical version of a poem my my favorite poet, Lt. Wilfred Owen. (I actually visted his grave in Ors, France just to thank him for this poem, a poem that changed my views of the world. And check out The Big Parade, a song about The Wall in Washington DC. A song about the loss of life in a war filled with Darkness. A song that talks about the the attempt to find closure. Was there, too, with my youngest. Told him to look at the names. Told him to protest like hell if he doesn't believe in a conflict, a war, but never protest those who fight it.
I'm not gonna lie, I balled my eyes out when i first heard this song, shit don't usually rock me, this one hurt. Thanks for your reaction.
Natalie, got to love her. She's amazing soul. Love her music so much and love going to her concerts. Incredible experience when seeing her live with incredible songs.
I have listened to her for years and this song resonates with me for so many reasons. My trauma was hidden by an upper class family. I was molested from cousins on each side and my parents silenced me. I was raped at 15 and beaten by them for shaming them. I was invisible. I hate that this child went through this, but he was seen. I wish I would have been.
Great reaction Paul - hit you just how I knew it would. A hard song and subject matter to listen to and watch - the emotion in her voice was there right from the intro. I wasn'.t sure whether to put you through this one, but felt it needed to be seen, as the "stay out of it" scenario really wasn't an option. Once again thanks for the obvious passion in your words, and sorry for any upset caused by the subject.
I’m with you all the way 👏👏
You have to understand - this song was written over 30 years ago. There was a different atmosphere then, and reporting something to the authorities was "the last straw". Today, it's a totally different world where Karens will confront people in grocery stores because their child is in the cart instead of a separate stroller. But there is a balance between the two.
I love her song San Andreas Fault
This is a "hard " song....disturbing...her rendition----- flawless....I'm speechless
"You've given him these cuts and sores, that don't heal with time or with age"
This song was recorded before you were born. You don't know how it was in the 70's-90's Try Cheery tree song by 10,000 maniacs
Like you!
Great Review ...
Amen brother, I’m right there with you!
i think the year (2005) in your title is off. She said she wrote this song 12 years ago. the album In My Tribe, came out in 1987 which means she wrote the song in 1986 (presumably) so this VH1 Storytellers actually aired in 1998 or 1999...
I had to subscribe because very few people play her
Roe v. Wade, contraception, education. Some people just don’t need to be parents and they need options..
Please do a reaction to Dulce Et Decorum Est. It is a musical version of a poem written by a British soldier who was killed outside Ors, France on Nov 4 1918.
So i know and love the song, just wish to hear it with out the commentary

By all means. Go watch it on the artist channel. That is what is is there for. Your wish is my command. Link is in the description.
I'm with you. I'd fuck some shit up. Don't mess with kids.
I am from the school of if you cant make out the words then dont sing them. There are times when this can be broken, of course. But overall if it sounds like constant mumbling and you cant make out the words then what is the point? My strumming was and is heavily influenced by 10.000 manicas. My tendency to like arpeggios is linked to REM. The internet was it is infancy during their haydays. This was when you either had the radio on or bought cassettes and then CD's. Most peole in the US did not have internet until mid 90's. Even then we only had 56k modems using telephone lines. Those were days...
Sadly, Natalie too was merely an observer of the boy's situation. No actual help for him.
It was a time when you were expected to keep to your own business. She clearly wanted to, she wanted to help, but she couldn't. Anything she was likely to do would endanger her own safety, and make things worse for the child. Neighbors would have her back, police wouldn't care. I've seen personally enough of the help calling the police or social services had. And what will happen after she tried to do something and was ignored, the abusive parents would punish the child for "embarrassing them and trying to get them in trouble" the entire system was set against being able to help
