This is such a beautiful video that demonstrates both her infinite compassion, respect and reverence for those that have passed as well as her hilarious sense of humor in getting the crowd to "Curb Their Enthusiasm" so to speak. (Larry David, another genius performer BTW) My blood nearly froze also when she mentioned she had put to music Mr. Gerad Manley Hopkins poetry to music just as he desired 130 years previous when it was written. For this and numerous other reasons I am honoring her legacy by naming my daughter due this July "Natalie Anne". (Yes that is Natalie and I in my caption, April 8th, 1999 SLC, UT. It only took another 15 years to get her to sign the photo.)

Absolutely iconic. I have loved her distinctly beautiful voice and personality since I was in high school (1993). She still lived only a short distance away, in Jamestown, NY. Her parents still live there and the parents of a friend of mine are her next door neighbors. What a small world. I would love to meet her but how awkward would that be? Oh, Natalie, the people you have touched, near and far. Waiting in WNY for you!

Spectacular it gave me goosebumps to realize the words she's singing are so old yet still valid and beautiful. Brava for being so emotionally in tune to those forgotten by most and giving them back there voice in such a heartbreaking way.

For those who said she was pretentious, let me respond with this: As an artist, you have to respect and honor your work before anyone else does. Natalie is successful and she is one of the best writers and singers of our time. For her to honor her own work is not pretentious, but instead confident in her ability to reach to those of us who are willing to accept, which by past precedent, has been in the millions. Love this performance and this record.

Went to go see her in berekley two weeks ago. Let me tell you that it was one of the very best shows I have ever seen of hers. at first she seemed slightly nervous not much talking in between songs. But after a couple of songs oh my god she was beyond words. She came out for two or three times on time she was out there for 30 plus mins. Signing old stuff with a new twist to it, telling funny stories. The show was over 3 hours and it was amazing I can' t even tell you how good it was.

@Zeldovich All I know is that people write to express themselves; to communicate some deep meaning to others. It takes courage and perseverance and brilliance and they don't do it to float into obscurity after a hundred years. I think that anything that keeps the conversation about their work going would be better than having it forgotten forever. Whether you liked this performance or not, you have to admit that you heard the voices of those long dead, and it had to have stirred something.

I so admire Natalie Merchant..She is so incredibly talented, beautiful voice, but I have seen her in concert many times and I do wish she would have a little more fun...she seems only serious, which is fine, great, probably a testament to her intellect and her soulfulness, but don't take away all fun away from your audience. Every concert I've been she has admoninished and even abruptly left the stage.
