Natalie Imbruglia "Torn" - Signature Songs That Are Actually Covers
In 1997, actress Natalie Imbruglia followed fellow soap stars Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan in making the switch from Australian tv show Neighbours into the UK charts. Her debut single “Torn” sold 1 million physical copies in the UK alone, where it reached number 2 in the charts and was the most played song on the radio in the whole world that year but suprisingly Natalie Imbriglia's version wasn't first, or the second, or even the third version of the song to be released and make the charts.

Best singer out of all the aussie soap stars
Really respect that she always sings live - her voice is amazing!
I think the success of her version had much to do with the amazing music video production. After just listening to Lis Sørensen's version; if I hadn't heard Natalie's version first, I would have been a big fan of Lis' version. In any case the song itself is incredible regardless of who sang it!
Very nice video! As a Natalie fan myself, her version of "Torn" is my favorite by far. Also recommend that everyone check her discography as she is a brilliant songwriter herself. My favorite album of hers is White Lilies Island. Her most recent Firebird (2021) is great!

Hands down the best version, it's not even close! The Ednaswap version is barely listenable and the Trine Rein has a kind of Eurovision vibe to it... Natalie's version gave the song a new life. It's nothing short of perfect when it comes to pop songs of that nature.

@@Traxploitation you should do how Britney Spears My prerogative or Whitney Houston I will always love you or Phil Collins groovy kind of love. These are all covers to other songs
I think Natalie's version is the strongest. Maybe a bit more poppy but who cares. She made it popular to a bigger audience. And wow, didn't she look beautiful in the video!!! Her eyes are gorgeous
This video could have been about Ednaswap and what they missed. Hopefully they have held onto the royalties over the years. I saw Ednaswap open for a band once. I picked up their CD and was surprised to find they originally did "Torn" (this was a bit after Imbrulgia's version came out). I certainly don't remember them playing "Torn" that night. They probably wanted to stay away from a song that in many ways was not theirs anymore.
Lovely video. I became obsessed with the Ednaswap version a few months back.
Hi. i'm loving the content. I always think the guitar solo in Natalie Imbruglia Torn is a bit like the guitar solo in James She's a star.

Thanks
As much as I didn't like any of that Aussie soap actor / Stock, Aitken and Waterman manufactured rubbish at the time (from about 87-90), I think Natalie Imbruglias Torn is probably the best song to have come from Neighbours & Home and Away 😆

100! The classic joke was how did Stock Aitken and Watermans studio get its name...the hit Factory? Someone slammed the door and the S fell off. 😆😆
I think what’s interesting is that the people that write this song are rolling in cash, as they should be, whilst she must have made bugger all

Well that would depend on her recording contract. Owning and earning from a recording can be just as lucrative as Owning the publishing. In some cases more goes to the owners of the recording than the writers. Like with streaming, only about 15% of the streaming money goes to the writers the rest goes to the owners of the master rights. For movie, TV and ad syncs its usually around 50/50 and for radio play in countries with neighbouring rights its also 50/50 for the broadcast licenses. But then most major label deals only give the artist around 20% of the money they get, bigger artists get a bit more...the other thing to remember is the popularity of the single drove sales of the album and she was a cowriter on every single other track...the album sold over 7 million copies. 🤔 I think she did OK. 🤷♂️
You did your homework. Good job.
what!? it actually a cover....now i know.. hahaha
Remember Chris Evans who dated her saying she told him she wrote the song. And him finding out years later it was a cover and then saying on the radio just how good an actor she was as he totally believed her.
Anne preven canta desde el corazón, el resto son imitadores
Brotha.... Keep up the good work.... I promise you're channel will bubble..... I learned so much and said WHAAAT..! at least 20 times on the last vid I watched. Keep it up 👍🏼

The other versions didn't have a management company pushing their versions in the way Kylie did. People were buying her, not the song. Aussie soaps were the original XFactor!

@@hitnrunguy9203 All of the previous hit versions were released by artists with "management companies pushing their versions" The original version of Locomotion was the 7th highest-selling song of 1962 in the USA, and the artist Little Eva was managed by Don Kirschner, who formed and managed The Monkees. The Grandfunk Railroad version went to number 1 in 1974, they were one of the first "stadium rock" acts, they sold out Shea Stadium 5 times faster than the Beatles. A disco version in 1979 topped the charts multiple times in NZ and was top 20 in Australia. You have to give Kylie a little credit, not every actor from an Australian soap was able to have a successful music career let alone reach the level that Kylie did.

@@hitnrunguy9203 So, you're saying Kylie Minogue had more marketing behind her than the Don Kirschner-managed Little Eva and a band that sold concert tickets faster than the Beatles?? And that's what's wrong with the music industry? I'm so confused as to what your point is?
❤❤❤❤👍🏻👍🏻
One Car Pile Up is best version
I like some of her other stuff I've heard (Wrong Impression), though I think Trine Rein did Torn better.
None of the cover versions come close to the raw power and emotion of the original Ednaswap version.
But how she managed to not get copyright strikes
@Traxploitation
7 ай бұрын
"Copyright strike" is a KZread specific term for the action taken when a channel/uploader is viewed to have infringed Copyright. Cover songs are legal. They don't breach Copyright so there would be no grounds for a "Copyright strike" 🤷♂️ besides that, in this case the cover version was produced by the cowriter of the original.
It was the cute guy in the video that anyone cared about actually...
I suppose this is not the first time that a cover artist gets more famous than the original singer. In this case it's quote understandable since Ednaswap's version is just too grungy compared to Imbruglia's lighter arrangement.

Its a great album, she's underrated as a song writer because her biggest hit is a cover, but she wrote or co-wrote pretty much all her other songs.
Natalie got into US market before Kylie minogue, it's pretty impressive, shame her career didn't take off after Torn

Excuse me? Kylie had a top 10 song The Locomotion on the Billboard Hot 100 a full decade before this song hit the Billboard Hot Airplay charts. It wasn't even on the Hot 100 because it was an album track and not a single. Chart policies have changed since.

Natalie's UK career didn't take off like Kylie's did, but she has always remained popular back home - probably more respected in fact than "the singing budgerigar". No disrespect intended to either though - in both cases they lasted far longer than the other "Neighbours" wannabes because they were far more talented. Though Craig MacLachlan evolved into a respected stage actor (singer - not so much).
I am one of the few that doesn’t like this song. It drove me nuts how much it was overplayed in the 90’s and even into the 2000’s.
