I've only recently started my herbalism journey and I'm 59 🤣 I'm just so blessed to have found your channel, thank you so much for all the incredible info you provide for novices like me. Growing up in South Africa, my grandparents had a small farm and grew their own vegetables and fruit. They also had a couple of dairy cows, some chickens and a couple of pigs. As kids we were so healthy eating fresh, whole foods and benefiting from the herbs and flowers my grandma grew. As kids she used to make us roast beef sandwiches with Nasturtium leaves and I loved the flavour. I've been growing Nasturtiums in the UK for a while but I wasn't really aware of all the benefits so today I made up a batch of chopped Nasturtium leaves with wild honey for an antibiotic syrup for winter, fingers crossed it works 😁 Thank you again and God blessxx

I grew a nice big patch of nasturtium this year! My husband had Covid and had lingering symptoms. I just discovered the health benefits of this plant and I’ll be giving him leaves to see if we can get it cleared up!!

Garlic cloves 2x a day with honey ok will heal so many things

I didn't hear about the concern with kids eating them before. When my daughter was young we grew them because her friends were wildly amused to have them in salads. Never saw upset tummies from them, just giggles of delight when they found them to be food, and tasty. They would brag to their moms or others about the flowers in the salad that they ate!

Yeah, I doubt it is really an issue but when I come across such information, I try to share it and let people do their own research and use their own judgement

My kids eat nasturium flowers all the time. We have had no problems there! The kids are out in our garden constantly picking and eating everything! Lol I have a garden tour coming up in a video soon. Now you have me looking forward to trying a tincture with them!

I make my own kombucha. And I just planted nasturtiums, so I’m thinking a nasturtium ginger kombucha will be really yummy!

This is one flower I don't have in my herb and flower garden... yet. Definitely going to be in the look out for some to add next spring. I'm always looking for new flowers (with mutli-purpose uses) to add some vibrant color to my herb garden.

My chickens love them too, when the neighbours had them growing through the fence and over our retaining wall, you could see where the chickens could reach too as they jumped up and was a line they didn't grow below 😂. Neighbours not currently growing them anymore

Easy to grow plant some in your chicken cage under some netting let the chickens pick through it not destroying the plant but getting the leaves there are lots of herbs that a great for chickens health to peck as needed. I do oregano basil time mint and Pasley rosemary no one likes mint ha ha

Cool, been snacking on those leaves while in the garden, love the taste! Also been using/eating and adding to salads my hibiscus blossoms 😊

11:14 🤣🤣 yep, I put nasturtiums outside my poly tunnel where I’m trying to grow brassicas for over winter, spring. I knew they could be a pest trap but can hardly see nasturtium leaves for the caterpillars lol. Brassicas are netted in case they get adventurous but yep that was a faux pas. They need to be much further. Plus my first year growing them, didn’t realise how huge some of them can get…love them. Love all your videos, you’re an absolute minefield of knowledge, amazing, thanks for sharing.

Put seeds in have them in 2 parts of the garden 1 in container. you just have to watch them they grow so fast and could take over. but i love them. don't need much care. they look loverly.

I trimmed it back in ignorance, but it just seems to be sending out tons of new shoots and growth from the stems I cut back.... I just planted a row of these seven day ago and some were coming up after five days and I planted them for the reason that you talked about but I didn't even know that you had this video, I didn't even know if you knew about this plant. I also planted them because the area where I planted them is not really great soil and I heard that these grow better in not so good soil. I enjoyed the video even if it is older the information is always new.

I use the flowers in salads but never dried any of the plant before, also have to try the green seeds!! Absolutely love your channel and appreciate your help from gardening to sewing!! FINALLY!!! I have some!!! Mine just started to bloom but I planted them in a new bed so the soil was excellent! Explains why now towards end of season when all the other plants have been using the soil nutrients I have now started to see blooms. Had a ton of leaves till now though. Also my borage FINALLY bloomed. Again in same bed too. Still no marshmallow nor feverfew. :( I’m gonna add some to a different place next year. It’s looking like I’ll still be here. I’m sure it was the location. The bed was just so new and only 6-7 hours sun. The “home front” has been doing sooooooooooooooo much better and it’s starting to feel like days of old. I know you understand this and I’ll talk to you more later. Just feeling blessed! Praying everything stays on track!!! I didn’t and won’t do anything with my nasturtiums this year. I wanna let them develop but next year I’ll definitely be using the leaves and flowers. Thanks for all you do! Love, hugs and blessings ~The Kid! ❤️

I really doubt it, especially after what I have seen, I often have a hard time believing such warnings, it seems very unlikely to me that nasturtiums would cause problems with children - I think the warning I saw was more for a tincture made from them but even then, I am skeptical.

Great video, Heidi! My nasturtiums just started blooming about 2 weeks ago and I started them from seed from rareseeds. I have never grown them before. It was actually recommended as a companion plant for corn, cucumbers, and beans. So I have them right in with all of that and everything is doing amazingly well. Our temps are now in the upper 80s and they are going strong. I came to see if I could find any info about them and your video popped up right behind another one I was watching without my even looking to see if you had one. So your video must be pretty high up in the nasturtium line up on KZread. Mine are only red but they are so beautiful! I love that they will come back without trying. I can't wait to taste them! :D

It has been so cold here the last couple of weeks and does not show signs of warming up until mid June. My nasturtiums have come to a stop and won't start growing again until it warms up. UGH! Same with many of my other plants. At least I still have other plants doing good despite the cold but I do not know if my corn will ever germinate now.

Thanks for this. I keep reading about planting them with zucchini but have never planted them. I wish I had some of those leaves right now. Something caught me and doesn't want to let go. 😷

Great info. When planted at the base of fruit trees they are reputed to make the sap bitter to certain pests 😉

No, I do not at this time and certainly not nasturtium plants. I doubt they would do well in the mail as they are pretty delicate. I might consider selling marshmallow starts because they are more hardy.

I also make a vinegar with the flowers, often combining them with marshmallow flowers, rose petals, and/or rosemary. This is specifically for use as a hair wash though.

My mother gave us nasturtium flowers in our salads when we were young. We only ate the flowers, we never had a problem. She usually added them to a green salad so we only had about 4 or so per salad.

You can stuff the leaves like if it was cabbage. So you have these little stuffed nasturtium leave in a tomatoe sauce. Very healthy for you.

Have been picking a couple of leaves at a time & dehydrating. Don't have a lot yet but every little bit helps. Going to try to fill a quart jar before summer's over. Off topic: canned 47 pints, 11 pint1/2s & 2 quarts of tony pears. Half are mine to keep. So. The 2 quarts had to get creative as ran out of sugar syrup so added the lemon juice they were soaking in with my homemade mint tea leaves from last year in with them. So it should be an interesting taste of summer this winter when I open them. I did lose 1 pint1/2 jar but that's Ok it was tasty. Oh & I always add nutmeg to my pears...turns them slightly pink.

As kid, loved picking the flowers, pull off the bottom of the long base bit that's pointy and suck out the nectar very delicious, wasn't a giant fan of the flower but it's not horrendous. Leaf is a bit peppery for me straight up but adding as spice to meals could be good

Just started my leaf tincture.

I grew nasturtiums my one and only time about 25 years ago. I don’t know why I haven’t grown them since. I grow mainly marigolds because I am surrounded by fields and it kind of keeps the bunnies away😂 good to know about the leaves in the flowers! I will keep that in mind I was thinking about growing them in containers. I can’t wait for my plants to produce some seeds for me for next year!

Great video and very informative. I just planted a ton of these everywhere and had no idea they were edible. If picking and eating off of the plant is there something you would want to do beforehand in case of little bugs or anything you couldn't see?

My leaves are so tiny...nothing like yours....but at least I got some this year😁

This is my first year growing nasturtium. Due to there is plenty. I collect the good ones and leave the rest for black aphids. The only issue is that I didn't know that aphids love it so I planted next to my Cucumbers. Now my Cucumbers have it too.

EricaTep Ruiz, dawn dilute in water, in a watering can, over the aphids. They think that is nasty. They won't make the honey. Ant "farmers" are quick to move them somewhere new. Need to retreat after heavy rain or sprinklers, but my ants kept them far from the hibiscus this all played out on.

Do you have lots of leaves? If so, then that simply means your soil is very rich, they will get little to no flowers in rich soil but tend to get lots of big leaves - which is great too :)

I am not familiar enough with hibiscus to know what parts and how to use it so I recommend you look into it yourself. Simply type in into your browser: Benefits of hibiscus (I really do not think variety matters a whole lot but if you want to, just type that in too but you may not get information specifically on that anyway). Then compare the different links you come across and their information. They should also tell you what parts of the plant to use

Nasturtiums have been a hard thing for me to grow here in north Texas. I've tried transplants and seeds, and neither seems happy. I'm going to try a few from direct sown seed this Fall, and hope that the cooler (though still pretty warm) temps will make them more likely to succeed. I'm not crazy about their taste, but the many other uses they bring to the table makes them worth the trouble in my book.

I too had problems growing them but planted yearly. After 3 yrs. they came up ALL OVER THE GARDEN! So many this past season. Maybe try throwing seeds every year and those who wish to grow will next year.

I'm in lower AZ and can grow them in early part of the year. Since they self-grow, they come up in Feb or March. When the heat comes on, those that have shade they last longer.

I eat food only for their nutrients and these sound like they add a host of additional nutrients to my green powder mix which I started because of one of your wonderful videos. Thank you for a very informative video. I read someone's story, where they felt cold coming, and they ate several nasturtium leaves and cold never came. I personally didn't get to try it as I rarely have colds. Last one I had, I kicked with with lomatium tincture. Half teaspoon, and then another half teaspoon next morning. I never had it leave before. However lomatium is not very common plant, and nasturtium is. :) How much of the tincture and how much of the turmeric your son took?

They can grow in pots too, many often do that, so you might consider doing that instead

Do you think a nasturtium oxymel would be a good alternative to a tincture?

I've grown nasturtiums organically and knew their leaves are edible and have eaten them. They have a mildly pungent taste.

My grandparents always lined the edges of the tobacco fields with long rows of nasturtiums. It wasn’t until recently that I started to wonder why, since they never ate them (that I knew of, although my grandfather was known to wander through his garden and just eat stuff off the vine) or even cut them for decoration. Do they have some sort of pest control properties?

Yes, they do. They are said to repel white flies and since slugs love them, they are more likely to be drawn to the nasturtiums and leave other garden things alone

Do not forget that the kabal does not want anyone using plant remedies, just their expensive addicting chemicals.

They can take awhile to germinate. I never do anything special with mine other than starting them in planter pots up against the house or green house until they get big enough to transplant. This way they stay more protected from the weird cold spring days we have been getting for the past couple of years whey they are first trying to grow

Question- I’m planning on growing some of these this spring, for medicinal usages in my front yard and some in the garden as a trap crop, however I read today that they attract aphids and I’ve not had an aphid problem in my vegetable garden, now I’m uncertain if I should grow them at all, can you advise?

I actually have read some time back that they help keep aphids off plants but either way, I have never had a problem with them attracting aphids to anything and I grow them where ever I can in my gardens

Yep, you can do that and yes, the stems are edible too and I would assume the benefits in the stems are equal to the leaves but I would not use any of them in tea only because a radish tasting tea does not sound appealing to me

Will have to start growing this, always looking for natural way to treat illness. Do you have any info on what to grow to lower blood pressure? Had to go to doctor to get blood pressure med. They wouldn’t give me a prescription unless I had blood work. 900 dollars I will go without next time. So looking for a natural way of treating blood pressure.

Look into hawthorn berry tincture or leaf infusion, yarrow tincture, and fresh red beet juice. Juice in small amounts, about shot glass worth.

The main problem is that chronic high blood pressure is caused from another underlying issue. Treating blood pressure with drugs is like giving some one a pain killer for a broken leg but not resetting and casting it. Then you have the cost to your health by taking those medications. There are a good amount of herbs that do help regulate blood pressure but you may want to look into what is causing it to go up.

What would you suggest for high blood pressure, and eye conditions, did the thyroid herbs help with weight loss.
