Chorus:
Street dreams are made of these
Niggas push Bimmers and 300 E's
A drug dealer's destiny is reaching a key
Everybody's looking for something
Street dreams are made of these
Shorties on they knees for niggas with big cheese
Who am I to disagree?
Everybody's looking for something

sirgenius1500 Freeman It really was never a contest. They are theorizing Nas lyrics at Harvard. Jay Z knew the money making formula. Jay is a great lyricist but Nas is a pure Lyricist. He’s been rhyming the same way since the beginning.

This came out the same year as the original Street Dreams. Who knows, this could have been put out first but Nas wanted to troll 2Pac by tapping on his own beat. The lyrics from the Kelly version sounds more like Nas’s style.

NY Rappers in the 90s were majority, very much far from ignorant....Nas came from the same "school of thought" as Rakim, Tragedy Khadafi, AZ, Talib Kweli and other rappers that were influenced by the 5%ers, NOI, Malachi Z. York, and others int he NYC black conscious community in the later 80s and early 90s. It was street niggas that were "kicking knowledge" and sharing information with each other about self, while still going out robbing and drug dealing for tax free money.. Hip Hop was all about knowledge....even Smack URL the battle rap league, stands for "S.treets M.usic A.rt C.ulture K.nowledge". It was definitely an interesting era in Hip Hop when there genuinely real substance and profound poetry in raps--while still maintaining a hood appeal, and attracting real gangstas to listen.

There's something about this track that makes me tear up a lil. I guess it reminds me of the 1990's (with the boy band symphony), for the time it was released was in the heat of a lot of confusing beef, whilst at the same time, the genre itself was also at its peak. When Nas said Hip Hop is Dead, he never meant it literally. He meant the culture behind what the music spoke had died; the streets had changed since the 1990's, thus, from what artists were seeing in physical form was changing the lyrical form of their music. The streets had become a little less raw, and from this song, I see it as the last triumph of 'real street lyrical talk'. One Love.

Oh my goodness this collaboration was pure fire and pure genius by two of the best to ever do it , Nas on point with his master class lyrics and flow , and R Kelly with that glorious hook that's off the chain , man it don't get no better than this , pure genius

"But what's the purpose, only the gods can watch the earth twist, I'm physically trapped down on the surface". You can put that next to Sartre, Camus, or any of the existentialist philosophers and it would provide just as much clarity and insight on the struggle for meaning.

That first verse tho. Beautifully written and spitted. Damn shame a lot of folks been sleeping on Nas. Weirdos. Even back in the day when It Was Written came out, folks hated him and said he went pop. I'm like do y'all hear the shit he spitting? Lol. Nas always got that message and poetic flows. No matter what
