Nas' Magnum Opus: A Deep Dive Into King's Disease 3

Комедия

Illmatic has consistently been held up as not only the best Nas album, but possibly the greatest album to ever grace hip-hop. That kind of success leaves large shoes to fill, and for decades Nas has struggled to keep those expectations satiated. Following a slump in the 2010s that left his career with an uncertain future, Nas found himself in the midst of a creative renaissance with producer Hit Boy. Their first three projects together garnered extensive acclaim, but it was with the third entry that the two set out to do the impossible-- top Illmatic. Did they succeed?
This is Part 2 of 3. Here, we do a deep dive into the third installment in Nas and Hit Boy's King's Disease series, discussing the lyrics, instrumentation, and themes that make up the masterpiece that is King's Disease 3.

That's why most OG's say for a few (killer mike, nas, etc) can't do numbers anymore. Nas really loves hip hop, and in knowing hip hop he knows it changes and grows with time. That's why he's in RARE FORM, he broke out of that OG type rap and made something new, something better

KD3 is an amazing album. The irony of people saying "it's no Illmatic" are the same people who would complain if he made every album like Illmatic saying he is stagnate and unoriginal with no growth. You can't win with critics or even the audience so just make what you feel at the time and release it into the wild for people to say whatever they want about it because everyone is a critic but not many are actually making anything.

@@BusyB1993 You specifically said Kendrick doesn't have "enough albums" Quality over Quantity. Kendrick takes his time to perfectly craft his albums, and is regarded as the Greatest Rap Artist of his generation. He is the first Hip Hop artist to win a Pulitzer Prize for DAMN, Good Kid Maad City is the longest charting debut album on the Billboard 200 in HISTORY having spent 10 years that has never been done before. Kendrick just set the record for the largest grossing Hip Hop tour surpassing legends like Kanye West, and Jay-Z who toured together, and his own Peer Drake who is the most popular and streamed artist in the world who toured with Travis Scott. Kendrick accomplished his feat solo. To Pimp of Butterfly is archived in Harvard's Library alongside The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and The Low End Theory. Kendrick curated The Black Panther Soundtrack. Nas never did that. Kendrick has never compromised his artistic integrity and made a song like "Oochie Wally". We Gon Be Alright was played and continued to be played at BLM Protests. Kendrick has talked about a myriad of topics in his music ranging from gender politics, institutionalized racism, black on black crime, religion, political commentary, alcholism, depression, generational curses, therapy, and more. On MMATBS he gave people what they needed not want Pharrell called the music "medicine" most don't like taking medicine, and Nas never created a Heart Part 5 that was powerful. Kendrick openly shows vulnerability in his music which his listerners relate to and addresses his flaws as a human being. Kendrick has great technical rap ability, creativity, versatiity, all while being ACCESSIBLE to the masses something a rapper like Lupe fiasco no longer does. He is respected by Hip Hop legends, Ice Cube, Jay-Z, Andre 3000 Eminem, Dr. Dre, Kanye West, and Nas himself who said Kendrick was the rapper who left him "suspended in air" on KD3. He didn't say that about any other rapper. And Kendrick has influenced an entire generation and even artist before his as Kanye West stated when Kendrick released his poem to 2Pac in album form To Pimp a Butterfly much like Nas is viewed as "the savior" to his generation Kendrick is viewed in the same light to his. I love Nas to death, and 2Pac & Nas were my Mike and Kobe, but to say he can't "hang" with Nas is false when he has surpassed him. And Billboard ranking Nas the 3rd best based on their "criteria" isn't bad when deep down Nas fanbase was expecting much low and they know they were shocked he was ranked Top 3. Have a blessed day.

@Koolkai4299 You forget to mention that Illmatic is archived in that library as well as Nas having a fellowship program for hip hop in Harvard, Nas has also been interviewed by multiple Harvard professor's to discuss his work personally.. Sure, Kendrick curated the black panther soundtrack but, let's be realistic, only about half of that album is good. You can sit here and name all the things Kendrick has done that Nas hasn't but, I could do the opposite just as easily. Kendrick has never made an album close to the influence Illmatic holds, Kendrick has never made a conceptual song on the level of Fetus or I gave you power or even Rewind.. to me this is a moot point, for the amount of things Kendrick has done that Nas hasn't you can bring up just as many for the opposite side. Lmao, Kendricks never compromised his artistic integrity? I guess it's just my imagination that he made that trash ass song with Rihanna then and HUMBLE, LMAO. That song is great as a party song or whatever but, completely trash lyrics all the way through. Nas has touched on every single one of those topics in his songs as well so, I fail to see what point you're trying to make with that. Kendrick has not surpassed Nas, there's nothing you can say to prove that objectively, just based from your own opinion.

it was a cool video. But I agree to a certain extend. Yes KD3 is a Nas magnum opus but only in his 3rd prime. To me it's not necessarly better than iww, lost tapes, stillmatic and even magic. Part of the reason Nas is a legend is not just because of illmatic, but all his other classics too his longevity and great discography. a lot of people put iww ahead of illmatic, and righfully so because to me nas as a rapper peaked on iww. I myself still put illmatic at the top but iww is a great sophomore album. I wished people would stop underestimate all the other nas' album. stillmatic got probably nas' most creative songs, god's son and life is good are nas' most personnal joints. Magic and lost tapes 1 are the closest to illmatic in the way the songs are structured to be only about pure emceeing. and I can go on and on, each album add something to his legacy. personnally, before the hit boy run, I already thought he had a great disco, but it was neck to neck with the jays the commons the kanyes the eminems, and nasir and lost tapes 2 were disapointing. But after the hit boy run, he just lapped everyone

These narratives are written by people who were not there in real time. Im sick of the way this narratives keeps getting fermented into history. No one in the streets was thinking that deeply about it, thats who he made it for. IWW was received by the streets with just as much love as iLLmatic . The ILL vs IWW comparison is a narrative generated and continued by journalist, armchair rap experts, and the like. At that time in particular, the standards of rap were still dictated largely by the streets, and the common everyday folk, not some professional academic class.

His writing got better on It Was Written and he evolved as an artist however, there are a few skippable tracks on It Was Written. It Was Written is the "Fan Favorite" Nas album, while illmatic is considered the most "impactful" that's how I differentiate them.

Untitled aka The N album, is a top 5 Nas album but non black influencers, non black youtubers, and non black hip hop reviewers ain't feeling black Empowerment music.

Incredible video, very nice editing and writing, you're way too articulate for a channel with 6 hundred subs lmao. This Nas resurgence will be one for the ages, and I'm really glad I got to see it from my perspective. Honestly, KD2 is still my favorite out of the series lol and probably my fav Nas album oat but I really loved hearing your thoughts and why you loved KD3 so much, cheers man

A simply amazing overview with fantastic research, great insights and an understanding of what makes Nas without any question, the greatest emcee the World has ever seen. His albums tell a story like only he can and the KD series (don’t forget Magic) is a victory lap on a career that is unmatched. God’s son has never been a more appropriate moniker for someone such as Nas.

Seeing him perform most of KDIII live in MSG was so inspirational and yes I will agree with you this album is this generations illmatic. KD one is a classic and 2 he was popping his shit. This new magic album is so great it really shows that Nas isn’t done at all and he’s turning 50 this year.

Nas is Contrarian in his approach. Every other 🇺🇲 rapper drips heavy on the trajectory of capital accumulation (cars, house addresses, partylife...). Nas' teaching rap underlings about Perspective...above the deceptive Flashy lifestyle and to evolve/growth into a well actualized existence. His recent musical engagement absolutely needs to be Celebrated 🎉 Great Commentary by the way 👏 Keep Going 🤝

I got KD3 as Nas 3rd best album behind illmatic it was written. Beautiful video. I agree KD3 is the album for me that completely sealed the Goat debate in hip hop. KD3 is the album we wanted from Nas the vibe lyrics him talking his shit and he doing it at the right time. Nas is the greatest to ever do it

90s nas was a different beast. the fact that he still puts out well rounded albums with great lyricism AND great beats is what weve been wanting from him. I think KD2 / Magic 1 is better than KD3 / Magic 2 though.
