He genuinely believes what he's doing will lead to peace, and is the only way to achieve peace. If Naruto could convince him of a way to get peace in a less violent manner, he'd have been willing to listen. But he knows Naruto can't think of an alternate way, because he tried to do that himself before he formed the Akatsuki

That's because it's incredibly applicable. There aren't many "children's shows" that take the time to portray imperialism and the plight of buffer states that are bombed into oblivion as the proxy battlegrounds of larger stronger nations. How many animated cartoons took the time to make you sympathize with the leader of a terrorist organization while they are in the midst of destroying everything you love and hold dear, in addition to framing that destruction as almost justified?

Yeah Pain is the best villain in Naruto, not because he's the strongest, or the most badass, or anything really. He is just a perfect coming together of everything. Ideals, strategy, power etc. He's the peak of shippuden because he's relatable or at least believable, and his power is at the peak of what I consider to be basically realistic in this given world. Madara and beyond are kinda too much, it starts to resemble more of a wizard world than a ninja world, but Pain is the peak of the ninja world. He is a god among ninjas, not a God among gods.

Pain's speech is instrumental in Naruto's philosophy going ahead. Up until now, Naruto's sphere of thought was limited to his village. It's the first time that someone has forced him to think of the bigger picture, that the Fire nation and his village is a part of a larger system of larger conflict, that good people can be found outside his village and bad people inside it. Naruto understands Pain in the end and going forward , he starts to deal with things differently than how he does now. Man, I love Naruto. This show and its themes are very relevant to our times.

This episode showcases one of the reasons I love naruto so much as opposed to other anime (and other tv shows/movies for that matter). They take real, deep issues and approach the solution from all angled. You have the villain’s solution coming from a place of truth: it is hard to understand what someone else is going through if you’ve never experienced it yourself. Naruto, on the other hand, has gone through some rough life stuff, but he is out there trying to give everybody around him to have better life opportunities. Instead of wishing someone had the same struggles I have had in life so that they can understand me, I would want them to hear me out, learn from it, and live better. What am I doing with my time so that those around me can experience joy, not pain?

Sasuke wouldn't flounder for an answer on how to make peace or anything because Sasuke's goals aren't the same as Pain and Naruto's. For the most part Naruto and Pain have the same goals but VERY different methodologies. Sasuke on the other hand does not share those goals so he wouldn't even care about the question of how to bring peace. Probably because his entire clan was essentially sacrificed for a peace everyone else gets to enjoy, why the hell should Sasuke care about how to bring peace to the ninja world?

But as time passed, the horrors of war are being forgotten by the newer generation and countries are developing their own nuclear weapons in the preparation for a very possible third world war. Nagato's ideals were harsh and cruel but it's essentially what the real world is today. And the only reason there is peace in Boruto is because Sasuke and Naruto became demi-gods with enough power to destroy whole continents making the villages shit themselves and not dare fuck shit up. Neither between them and especially not against Konoha. But now with Sasuke loosing the Rinnegan and Naruto loosing Kurama if the other villages felt like Konoha is weak enough and they could proffit they would attack and from that wars between the villages would spark again. Once Naruto and Sasuke die the newer generations will forget about the horrors of war during Naruto's time and will begin tearing each other apart again until someone or something strong enough will either scare them into momentarily stopping or into joining to beat a common enemy.

The Pain arc is the best and deepest arc in naruto IMO. Pain's speech was so good that he could have been the main character in the show if it focused on him instead of Naruto. Pain is literally the best "villain" in the whole series, his philosophy and the delivery of his speech are outstanding, the speech is so good that his philosophy is even comparable to Itachi's if not better. Sadly, he had to lose because the show is named Naruto. But on the bright side, this arc impacted Naruto so much that it changed his views on life and peace in future arcs and episodes.

As someone who gave psychosocial support to refugees in the past I love Pain's character and was a paramedic in both Mosul as the Gaza Strip in 2014 and '17 I love Pain's complexity. He lost so much due too other parties who destroyed his nation, that he ultimately became the very thing he hated. Blinded by those emotions he took out not only high ranking opponents but also civilians. Its similair too the refugees I helped from AF and ME and during my time in those places. I've met people who lost their siblings, parents or friends in U.S. airstrikes and during civil war. They were never compensated for those losses, instead they felt attacked by a foreign entity who either directly attacked them or deliberately set up locals against eachother but they did not seek revenge. The nightmares, the screams, the feeling of almost being completely numb and knowing you won't receive justice. Pain always perfectly portrayed the sheer horror in his eyes. Its the same look I've seen a hundreds of times before. That look of pure despair when people lose family members but also the look of pure hope after reuniting with their loved ones, after we pulled them out of the rubble. The grey area where you see good people become bad people after their home is bombed by foreign countries. To either retaliate or find peace. Being invited to eat with their families and receiving gifts from their families and even flowers from children. Its hard to find out that you sometimes shared a meal with people that died shortly after. The pain becomes so agonizing that every memory, every image and even smell causes you too break down, to the point it feels almost impossible to eat, drink and even stand up. In the real world, we might see ourselves as the Hidden Leaf Village but who says that we're not the Akatsuki and the real Leaf Members are the people we invaded in the name of democracy and freedom while we all knew that national resources were looted and the wrong parties were given financial support which sparked even more division and terror amongst the local population, even locking up those who say the truth (Assange). Anyone, literally anyone can become a rebel or someone who inflicts extreme terror when they go through injustice inflicted by others, especially foreign entities. Who gets to decide whether he is from the Hidden Leaf or the Akatsuki shouldn't only be the right of Western nations and the U.S. Is it truly us who bring "peace" to the Ninja World or did we cause chaos in the Middle East and other parts of the world, the same way Pain described the fate of the feudal clans.

Pain's speech in this episode actually helped me gain perspective on the United State's foreign affairs as a young adult, and how often the conflicts we engage in are direct results of our purposeful destabilization of other countries and peoples. This arc in particular is something special, and it should be appreciated for a lot more than some cool action set pieces.

God. Pain time and time again proves that he's one of the best villains ever made in anime. This whole arc was so masterfully done.

The somber atmosphere at the end is remarkable...they were at the forefront of their ability as they tried to grapple with the tough philosophical topic. Twas remarkable to watch

What also hits hard with Pain's speech is that his goal has happened in the real world. Nukes. With nukes, the strongest countries in the world has created a momentary peace among the top 50 countries.

Pain’s plan is actually a lot like Ozymandias’ plan from the Watchmen Movie. He wants to use the Tailed beasts/ Dr Manhattan to cause so much pain and damage that the remaining humanity will rally together against a common enemy.

His method still brought peace. The 4th war happened in the end. The tail beast weapon still was made. Everyone teamed up and a lot died and in the end they got peace

Don't matter how many times, every single time Pain speech is incredible. What a character! "Known pain, feel pain, contemplate pain..."

They are trying too hard to find faults in Pain's speech. Just accept it he was right, Naruto's way will take like 100 years...and what happens to those people who will suffer for those 100 years? and there is no guarantee it will last anyways.

×××SPOILER××× In the end, was sharing the same pain against this same enemy in common that brings the world to fight together and achieve the "peace" afterwards. So, i guess Pain wasn't wrong after all. People sharing the same pain made them understand one another, of course it is temporary, but the cicle of hatred could be broken in this time.

This episode reminds me of the MCU where Hydra, SHIELD, and even Tony tried to create a global weapon to kill people in the name of security even though it would sacrifice freedoms and liberties. Like Cap said, “This isn’t freedom, this is fear.”
