NARROWBOAT | We are THREATENED from the towpath | LIVE ABOARD LIFESTYLE DANGERS!!! | Episode 59

Hi Guys
Welcome to our latest episode in our ADVENTURES in our TINY FLOATING HOME.
This week we experience the highs and low of our CRUISING and OFF GRID LIFESTYLE. The recent floods get the better of us and with dwindling resources we are forced to leave the boat! As we return we are overjoyed to see lower water levels and set off cruising northwards. We cruise by party boats and find out some interesting facts about BORDER REIVER, our TINY FLOATING HOME could have been named after a famous 1960’s motor racing team???
As we cruise into Loughborugh our LIVE ABOARD LIFESTYLE shows us that onboard SAFETY and SECURITY is vital if we are to feel safe on our NARROWBOAT. We experience a threat for the 1st time!!
We finish the day with one of Michael’s famous chicken tandoori, maybe life isn’t so bad after all.
We hope you enjoy a look at our ADVENTURING LIFESTYLE xx

The Mrs will never feel so safe walking down a towpath on a dark January. Also not a working breed so happy with half hour walk a day. Obviously would rather 2hours, Lol. Very intelligent breed easy to train. Seriously you need a dog makes you feel so safe, way Any wrongern would run a mile second the dog starts to bark. Which is kind of ironic. My family on my mum’s side were canal boat people from the 1800s until ww2 ( all her uncles and my grandfather left the boats in ww1 and ww2 to serve with the navy and the merchant marine and none of them went back, although my great uncle jack kept one of the family boats until well into the 60s). As a group they were ostracised and usually referred to as ‘gypos’ everywhere they travelled and, since most had almost no education (my grandmother was tending the horses from the time she could walk and was functionally illiterate) they got a rough deal nearly everywhere they went. Canal boat life was rough, alcoholic, often violent, and far from idyllic. If im being honest i have to admit i dont really like this modern canal boat lifestyle stuff because it give a false impression of the realities of canal boat history.

Great video! I am a local to this area. Firstly, the River Soar flood plain between Leicester and Loughborough is often completely flooded many times per year and great care needs to be taken whenever there is a heavy downpour, as we have all experienced recently. Secondly, there is nowhere in Loughborough that I would recommend anybody stays for any length of time. I lived in that town for many years and, I am sad to report, it is full of drug addicts and undesirables, especially on the route that the canal takes north of the town. The best solution is to plan your route so that you stop south of the town near Pillings Lock and then sail straight through the following morning without stopping. Sad but true. Enjoy your journey guys! x

For safety at night, get good security infra-red cameras (and even sequester one in bush alongside the towpath). A good LED flashlight to blind thugs. Shrieker high-deciBel noise alerter or whistle, pepper spray, paintball gun, baseball bat, 3 -iron club, bullet resistant glass windows, machete, axe, throwing rocks. A top roof mounted gun turret flush with the roof line (like a B-29) would be an added bonus. Burlap bags with cinder blocks to weigh down the carcasses at the bottom of the canal in remote rural stretches. ..... or a bumper sticker type sign that reads "Warning: Boat alarm sounds like gunshots".

There are so many lessons to be learned from this! Number one: you might be on a (reltively) benign waterway which can turn very nasty very quickly. If you can't see where the shallows are, and run aground totally or partially, it is likely to be embarrassing at best, life- threatening at worst. You were right to stay tied -up until the flood subsided. Canals and rivers are dangerous. And then, there's the party boats. Squadrons of guardian angels overhead. Hmm.. And them tow-rags telling you to f. Off. No point in arguing with the likes of them. So, skipper, navigator, diplomat, engineer and chef you need to be. For starters. X. Nick

Drugs are the scourge of society now for the last 3 generations of "yutes"; they destroy family, destroy initiative, destroy marriage, destroy mental stability, destroy finances and job outlooks, and destroy hope. Then those who had the will and fortitude and or good sense not to listen to the siren -song of the glorifiers of drugs and could find the small beautiful aspects of even a simple life on this wondrous Earth to occupy one's thoughts are the ones who have to pick up the pieces.. and pay the taxes.....and get victimized when they rob you for yet another worthless high. Yet if these users would just realize who the final destination of their money they paid for their transient "high" are, they would be scared to death to meet them; the drug cartel leader and his chief hitmen enforcers living it up in a secure villa surrounded by paid-off police or ex-military who would have no hesitation , at least with the Mexican Cartels, to behead your mom and dad in front of you. (Heck, Tijuana is again the murder capital of the world for the 4th year in a row. Despite San Diego, which has a higher population, being across the border, there are 20x more murders in TJ...90% cartel type. Mexican has 17 of the top most dangerous 50 cities in the world) I just wish there was a strong counter-champion to use positive peer pressure to keep teens from even thinking about "experimenting" and not fall for Snoop Dog's media-driven syncophantical subversive message. It is way past time to make drugs "un-cool".

Some years ago as a family we went down the Thames. Drunks tried to storm the boat. Whole family was shaken. We had roudy kids at Hampton court. We left our holiday 1+ weeks early. No one wanted to do boating again. There is no safety been thought of or implemented or police.... unfortunately as a parent of older children they were brought up to respect but now yobs smoke outside windows, urinate on fences to open drug dealing while the police sit in there cars. I feel the boating community must come together and press for secure boating tie ups with fences / gates and at the very least Ccvt installed. As for pleaseure boat holidays I think everyone should have a certificate of competency before they can sail or travel on the waterways. Any wrong doing their licence is removed. Keep our canals safe and enjoyable. True or not I have been told several boats saw a cow in distress over people trying to ride it, feed it and put a chain around it and walk it like a dog. At least you are safe! Getting old is no less of a burden as being middle aged in this lawless society.

Hi there what a great and informative comment, thank you so much for leaving it for us. You make some excellent comments. There are some secure moorings in various locations, we found them in Leicester and Blackburn but we are sure there are others. We are very sorry that your family had such an experience, despite this video we put out we have had no other incidents over our 4 years of cruising on the UK waterways so would say to people give it a try. It's a relaxing way of spending time particularly on some of the more rural areas like the Yorkshire sections of the Leeds & Liverpool or the Kennet & Avon canals. We hope your family try again... Lovely to hear from you, Jackie & Michael xx

I have been watching a lot of narrow boat videos. It looks beautiful and yet I can tell that I do not have the temperament to live in one. It is not the small space or the water. You don't need to be on a narrow boat to encounter situations like that. Sadly, it's just a part of life that we all need to be cognisant of, particularly in less affluent areas. But as you know, for every 1/2 mile of dirty, glass strewn, yob infested, desolated urban canal, there's 200 miles of beautiful, lush green, safe and welcoming historic English waterway to enjoy :) You did right by quietly moved on. Good call...

I've just subbed because I love narrowboats and the idea of canal life, but also the dynamics between you two are charming. Michael is sensible, capable and caring. You obviously love him, respect his opinion and heed his advice. "Obedience" has had its meaning corrupted over the years. It's now taken to be weak-minded and unsure enough to "go one's own way". What it actually means between a couple is love and trust, which are much stronger forces than pride and rebellion. Soz for harping on but it was so refreshing to see. All the best with your continuing adventures, I look forward to following them

Hi there, yes all is good but we do put a lot of time and effort and research into where we moor for a night or if we leave the boat for the day. Logistics is a big element of narrow boating, something we are both very strong at. Thanks for dropping us a comment, we appreciate it.

I just watched "A Day Full of Incidents" video and that avocado chat was hilarious! Michael was so funny being confused by the avocado and then your comment written on the screen, "At this point I fear for the avacado" hahah awesome! Thanks for the smile to both of you.

Some well dodgy characters roam the canal towpaths! The Nottingham to Beeston canal near me is one such canal! Runs through the city from the Trent opposite Forest football ground to the Trent at Beeston weir. Not a place to roam at night, particularly London Rd stretch and the city. Well handled. The Soar really does flood easily, the Wreake too!

Hi thanks for the great comment, good to know that. As boaters we are very aware where we moor, as you can see from this video. Now we know all about the Soar and the Wreake... that was a fun boating day when we nearly got pushed down the weir, did you watch it?? J&M x

We wild camp in our van and sometimes we just get a bad feeling or vibe from a place and we move on . One particular occasion 5 guys were fixing to Rob our van at 2am on the outskirts of a city .I jumped in the front and blinded them with the headlight and drove hell for leather into the city centre where we slept in a shopping centre car park beside delivery trucks ...so I really agree with your decision to move on a bit 👍

Hi Mark.... just read your comment and you had us both chuckling. We remember cruising by your offices. Michael was walking ahead of the boat, so now I have to explain to him why I was going a little too fast. Oops!! It's lovely to think you goggled us and found the channel. Hope you manage to watch some of our other episodes? Thanks J&M :)

We hired a long boat quite a few years ago on the Kennet & Avon Canal, near to where all the locks go steep up hill, it was such great fun, we had a week and went the other way from those locks. When we got back we walked up the hill and had a great time in the pub at the top. Thanks for this video its really interesting.
