Awesome boat driving. Very impressive maneuvering on the winding whole and to the water point by Michael and even though it was a little "whacky" entering the lock , I was glad to see Jackie at the helm and Captain Michael doing grunt work...haha Great work on this video.

I thought the term "Wind" in your boating context was pronounced wind as in winding up a clock not the air current wind, as you are turning your boat as in the hands of a clock. Unfortunately i can't find any references to this. Other than my time in the RN when this evolution was carried out to turn the ship at her berth, frequently to paint the other side. Enjoying your adventures immensely.

If coming up a lock with fwd undertow you could use the centre rope as a spring to stop the boat moving fwd. Capt John

Hi Mark and yes thanks for that, there are so many different ways to do these things and each lock is totally unique we find, we often speak to other boaters to find the best way for locks they use on a regular basis.

In that lock situation I’d just gently let the front button rest against the lock gate so no need to reverse much just a little to settle it.
@cruisingontheborder

Hi thank you so much for your comment, yes agree with you and we would do normally however there was so much leakage from the lock gates that we didn't want to flood the well deck.....
A camera up forward With a monitor at stearin would be a great help.

Hi Gerald, great suggestion thanks for that. Maybe we can put that camera on our shopping list for next year.
FYI….. a lock takes about 20 minutes, and is equal to a mile travelled, hence you can measure distance travelled in “lock miles”. Capt John

We had the same problem in the locks all the way to alrewas. After speaking to a lockie you should open the opposite ground paddle first because that keeps you into the side. Aston lock I had to shut the paddles a bit as in full reverse we were still coming forward and ramming the gates. They are such powerful locks. Caught us by surprise too. Looking firward to seeing if you made it out of stenson lock as theres a knack to it. Oh and my 17yo thought it was hilarious you like wedgies.

Can you explain why narrow boats don’t use fenders particular when in locks or mooring?
@cruisingontheborder
10 ай бұрын
Hi Mike thanks for the question it's a great one. We don't use fenders in lock because often there isn't enough room in the lock width wise to fit the boat with fenders on, particularly if the lock gates don't open fully (often they don't as wood or other debris gets stuck behind the gates). In some locks it would hinder you going up and down in the lock as they fill or empty. CRT lock keepers will ask you to lift them in locks too, they can be dangerous if there are issues with lock walls and they bulge in place too. We do use fenders when mooring as they protect the boat from scraping on walls when moored and there is some movement with the boat when other boats go by. Hope all that makes sense and answers your questions. Lovely to hear from you. J&M

wind as in wind up the rope or wind as in gale for wind? I thought the former(but i am no expert)
@cruisingontheborder

Hi Paul. ‘Wind’ on this occasion is a word used by narrowboaters meaning to turn the boat around to face the opposite direction. 👍❤️
@cruisingontheborder

As for the way to pronounce the word.. most boaters say it as ‘wind’ as in ‘a wind is blowing’

Hello... lovely to hear from you. Hope you are well? No the hull is thick made of steel plate, it would have to be a very very big rock and not sure the boat could go fast enough for it to piece the hull. J&M x
