Let's see... Famine could be an insane, now cannibalistic wendigo druid starving out the wealthy town that refused he and his family assistance (leading to their deaths) by killing their crops and sending swarms of rats, locusts and flies to devour or putrefy the rest of their food supply, as well as stopping any supplies or travelers being sent in. War could be an extremely bloodthirsty orc horde led by an abyssal demon in disguise as their brutal chieftain. The more they slaughter in battle, the stronger the demon and the orcs become. OR, if you wanted sonething less obvious, do an aged Paladin leading a bloody crusade against the local orc tribes in a desperate last bid to appease his god (who abandoned him due to an oath break that the old Paldin refuses to acknowledge) and die a "warrior's death" in battle. As for Death? One would assume it's a lich raising undead...until the party finds out that it's ACTUALLY a god of death, who's been trying to kickstart the apocalypse this whole time, but the heroes keep stopping him.

For a short campaign it was filled with a lot of plot twists and i was surprised with our DM, seeing as this was his first time, and he had played only a few campaigns before. He got us so hooked on the story that we forced him to play every day for 2 weeks. And to think it all started with the five of us sitting on a park bench at night and just started (what we thought was) a one off, casual campaign because we were bored. Im sad its over :(

A lot of authenticity and imagination just isn't as strong and the flexibility of table top rpg's as I understand it is better than their digital counterpart when everyone works together.

There just isn't (currently due to the tech') any good way to put a GM into a digital video game setup. It doesn't even matter between tower or console... SO you are very right that you can get a "D&D-esque style experience" but you're missing a LOT in the strictly digital medium versus "throwing dice and shouting" the way we Play at my Table (for instance). Don't lose hope, though. Through the likes of Discord and with app's and sites like rpgtablefinder.com you can even find "virtual Tables" where the experience can far more closely resemble the traditional dice throwing and Role Play of an old-school GM and Players creating stories much like these. I've only been Playing and GM'ing for a little more than 30 years, and it really IS the greatest hobby in the world. ;o)

I've looked information up on a monster that I knew nothing about but I didn't go "oh it's weak to fire better use that ingame to beat it." No I go "ok cool it sounds and looks really cool and has some interesting moves that could kill me." I never use any of it's weaknesses that I saw against it. My interpretation of the 4 horsemen has essentially been that they were 4 individuals in life who best represented the thing they became. Pestilence was someone who took joy in the weaponizing, experimenting, and spreading of disease, War was a someone who took joy in battle, destruction, and bloodshed, Famine was someone who took joy in the destruction of sources of food and water so they could watch people fade away and struggle to survive, And Death was someone who as the name would suggest reveled in the taking of life through any means simply to watch people die. Instead of going to where they would go when they died they were made into the horsemen and were charged with bringing about the end of the world when the time came.

If gods are kind, that could be how it works. But some are not. So it can be those who are chosen, regardless of desire. Unwilling to perform their role but helpless to stop it.

My Interpretation of the 4 horsemen are that they are the opposite of their titles. Pestilence a man who wishes to cure the world of all it's deseases makes some of the worst viruses around. War - A pacifist who's actions have caused more to die in battle around him. Famin - A person who was making a perfect food source only for it to twist and go bad. And Death is a healer who's presence seems to cause more people to die around him. They don't wish to be the riders, they simply are and must suffer the curse.

I can't help but wonder if that one episode of Stargate SG1 where they find the city in the radioactive acid mists protected by a shield bubble, and a super computer that is all too efficient at keeping everyone "safe" is inspired by the false hydra.

Thinking about making an Isaka campaign where the gods that brought them over want to play with them like chess pieces. The goal, conquer the world. I want the players to start off by being summoned, gaining a +1 to all physical stats for crossing over into a world with slightly lighter gravity, and an additional bonus feat to start off with. Similar to the pick your superpower before being summoned trope. I want the 4 horsemen to be the previous summoned heroes. I want the stories for them to be gripping, like if the players made their same mistakes, they too could end up in their enemy's positions.
