Narciso Yepes - Concerto d'Aranjuez : Adagio
At the height of his career, Narciso Yepes interprets Joaquin Rodrigo's masterpiece on his 10-string guitar. The conductor is Raphael Frübeck de Burgos with the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Frankfurt.
Rodrigo:
What can I say about Narciso Yepes? What can I say about the guitarist to whom we owe the international success of the Concerto de Aranjuez? Yes, it was in Paris in 1947 where Ataulfo Argenta, Yepes and the Spanish National Orchestra met to illuminate my unique opus at a time when no one new its true future. From then on, the Concierto de Aranjuez took on a new nature, and it is for this same reason that I am grateful to Narciso Yepes for the fruit of an intense collaboration that has brought us to travel our musical trajectories side-by-side. I will not say that Yepes was the best nor the worst. He has simply been my guitarist par excellence. My guitarist.
Joaquin Rodrigo in « El Mundo » May 4, 1997 (in commemoration of the Maestro's passing)
Besides the fact that I love this music, this artist, this video is here for several reasons: I'm learning to play this music; Mr. Bonsillens has regrettably deactivated commentary on his version; and I really wanted to pass on the story of how this collaboration between the composer and the guitarist began :
After an honorable but lackluster start with guitarist Regino Sainz de la Maza, this concerto was not played between 1940 and 1947. Then, Ataulfo Argenta introduced 19-year-old Narciso to Rodrigo who handed over the score, saying: "Take this, chiquito (young man), take this concerto. With this, you will go around the world" After hearing the fruit of three weeks of labour by the guitarist, Rodrigo embraced him, saying: "This will make us both famous"
Enjoy

My english teacher in high school used to talk about this song again and again. Back then, I wasn't able to get the deep emotional meaning of this song. Years later, I'm so thankful to him, to my dear teacher in Karabük. Hope you see this comment one day. I'm typing this in tears now. God bless you, god give you lifelong happiness. Can I so so very kindly beg for a little of what your teacher use to say.... I'm listening to this for years... n always in tears... How the journey begins, n how the transition takes place in the journey, n showing comes to the end... I cannot imagine the mind of the composer, how he has told an ENTIRE story thru this piece. How it brings the listener to a complete shift, suspended in space n time... forever. How divine is this.... Wud really live to hear ur story...

no way! insufficient technique slows down the scales and they are not clean. No way, it's not the best version by far!

@@killoe11 how can you say insufficient technique when talking about one the best guitarrists ever. The man was over 70 years old when he recorded this and he stil nailed it.
I was fortunate enough to attend to a Narciso Yepes concert along with "Cuarteto Latinoamericano de cuerdas" about 30 years ago. It took place in the wonderful Juárez theatre in Guanajuato city México. During the Festival Internacional Cervantino. I was most interested in the dancing events as I'm a dancer, and swear to dance in that theatre someday, wich i did. 30 years later i still remember the maestro performing an encore after another until he standed up, took his foot stool and leave. I still feel overwhelmed by his mastery and no other of the great guitarrist can bring the same feelings than him.... And learning to play the guitar after all these years ;) ;) What a piece of genius he was!!
My most favorite performance of this guitar concerto. Yepes has the best technique and passion.

for my mother in heaven.
Saludos!
This music it’s food for the soul!!! Extraordinary!!! My heart says THANK YOU !!!!
Maravilloso, eterno Narciso
Perfeçt muzik. Mukemmel.
Much appreciated! Yepes was a magnificent artist.
"Un ADAGIO" SUPER" UN DE MES *FAVORIS* thank you very much*

My favorite classical guitarist. Not just technically masterful but emotionally arresting; he always imparts poignancy to his performances. But he seems to be very under-appreciated.
Bravo! Mr. Yepes is still alive in my heart.

Yepes' performance of this concerto was my introduction to the piece about 27 years ago. I was intrigued by his use of a ten stringed instrument. I think he plays the cadenza on this performance beautifully!
C'est juste magnifique ! Ca sent le grand Western !
awesome.....
This song always reminds me "the english patient" movie.
A real wonder to see master Yepes play the twelve-string guitar
