Napoleon in Italy: Battle of Lodi 1796 (1/5)

In 1796, at the height of the Revolutionary Wars, Napoleon Bonaparte took command of French forces in northern Italy. He was just 26 years old and had never commanded an army before. Within weeks, he had turned his ragged, demoralised troops into a ferocious fighting force, defeating the Austrians and knocking Piedmont out of the war. With success, Napoleon began to believe it was his destiny to shape the fate of nations. In this series, we follow Napoleon's first glorious campaign step by step.

Yet when Napoleon's created the first eighteen Marshals of the Empire in 1804, the choices were of equal number (nine) of the Army of the Moselle and Rhine and the Army of Italy. It seems quite obvious or that despite the Army of Italy playing the bigger role in the victory over the First Coalition, Napoleon didn't want one army to feel overshadowed by the other army and to maintain loyalty of his new empire.

'Steingel, Desaix, Massena!' he cried, 'Ah! the victory will be gained! hasten, urge the charge! they are ours!' This doesn’t exactly excuse the fact they were extortionists to the max, but it goes a long way to explaining their behavior. Napoleon Bonaparte is my favorite and inspirational character. What a career he s had. One of the best commanders the world ever had. Over sixty battles just lost only 8 or so battles. One of the best tactians ever. Bold and always courageous leader who gave a code and also a law which has his name and still used by the world. EHTV thanks for creating these videos. Thnks for all your hard work and dedication also all the members and crew of ehtv . One of the most thrilling episodes ever. After watching these videos i used to search all these things and now had a great knowledge about Napoleonic era. Thnks also for it EHTV. Also after you showed some osprey books i started to read them . They are brilliant books. A huge fan of you from Sri Lanka ❤️🔥.love you guys. Also expecting more great Napoleonic content from ya channel. Thanks again for providing with great knowledge and information. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

THIS is what the internet was created for. Not garbage Kardashians, cat videos, influencers, but BRILLIANTLY created, historically correct, Hollywood rivaling quality documentaries of real history that moved the wheels of Europe, and eventually even the fate of the world. To think that the United States bought some third of all it's land from Napoleon so that he could pay for the first true world war is to remind us how relevant this is, even to our world today. Vive La Emporor!

The new style for the Revolutionary Wars looks brilliant and helps to distinguish from the later Empire series. The overall quality and cinematic value the whole documentary had was truly amazing.Thank you for the opportunity and I am immensely grateful. Can't wait for part 2!

He was a Captain of Artillery during his first victory and the winning strategy of maneuvers to force the British in the Battle of Toulon to retreat by Sea. His knowledge of Using Terrain and Artillery to support his Infantry attacks made him a genius in the eyes of his enemies. His organization of his Army into 20-30k man self sufficient Corps, made his Army extremely dangerous as being able to change directions and attack quickly.

Great video as usual and beautiful pictures too. Just a word about the Directory. At first, It was not seen as being led by incompetent and corrupted men, especially Lazare Carnot who was nicknamed The Organizer of the Victory. As a member of the Public Safety Committee during the Convention, he profoundly reorganized the French army and made it to be able to fight against the First Coalition and the civil war in Vendée. I think that the Directory has been discredited with its Coup d'Etat of 18th Fructidor when it eliminated the royalist political opposition. And threatened of being arrested and deported, Carnot had to run away...
