Nanci Griffith - I Wish It Would Rain

Музыка

From a live appearance during the late 1980's comes this song from Nanci. It was released in her 6th album by MCA which was entilted LITTLE LOVE AFFAIRS. The year of the release was 1988. While Nanci Griffith worked in a variety of music genres this one can best be described as what she called "Folkabilly".

Very sad news today. This was the first song of Nanci’s I heard. I had never really listened to any artists of her genre before, being more of a hard rock fan, but she opened a door for me that significantly expanded my musical boundaries. RIP Nanci, I love your work.

Same here: as a 20 something, country and folk held little interest to me until something made me buy little love affairs - and hearing Nanci's glorious voice for the first time blew me away. It was I wish it would rain that I loved the most, and 30 years later I often sang in to my baby daughter when rocking her to sleep. A unique and underappreciated talent, who made the most beautiful and timeless music.

She wasn’t just a part of the tapestry of music life when I lived in Austin in the 80s, she was a star of it, which is saying something, Angela Strehli, Albert Collins, the Vaughn bros. The very best of a landscape of endless talent. Funny, you don’t see it that way at the Time, Seeing Nanci pass the guitar around at a singer songwriter circle at the Chicago house, seeing The Iceman dancing with his wife at Antones on his night off. You don’t miss it Til it’s gone, Nanci is missed already, what a miracle she is

I'm 44, I feel as if I was cheated out of this woman's music! I never saw her on anything or knew anything about her, I had heard that a woman of her name wrote Love at The Five and Dime, but they never played any of her songs or videos on anything I ever saw. I finally found a CD at the flea market a couple years ago, and bought it becuase I recognized her as 'that' songwriter.... then after enjoying it looked her up, and discovered she had just passed away! Now I find all of her videos on youtube, and it's like "why in the world did nobody ever tell me this woman existed?" She's fantastic! The record companies and the music industry sure knows how to screw up a good thing.

Nancy is just so cute in this performance. Sparkling eyes, beautiful hair, and fun-filled expression on her face while she tells her story. Her voice is so pure except when she throws in a little growl for emphasis. The little dance step at 1:55 is adorable. This is my favorite of all her performances on KZread. My next favorite is "Love at the Five and Dime" as she tells the story about Woolworth's elevator chime.

I'll never forget the way I felt on the first listen to "Other Voices, Other Rooms." ( I owned 3 or 4 of her CD's by then )"Across the Great Divide," "Turn Around," "and especially "Comin' Down in the Rain" had a beautiful, melancholy mood ( if that makes sense ), which matched the blue mood I was in the day I bought the CD. It's been years since I've listened, but I bet I'll still feel nostalgic, and maybe a little blue.
