Nana Plaza began in the late 1970s as a restaurant and shopping plaza. A few go-go bars arose in the early 1980s, as did a snooker hall on the third level and a Lebanese restaurant on the ground floor. The shops and restaurants were gradually replaced by bars, and by the late 1980s, over twenty go-go bars had emerged in the three-level court, capitalising on the recent rise of tourist hotels in the area. Bars and foot traffic to the plaza grew steadily until it featured 39 entertainment venues by 2002.
