Naming Ionic Compounds with Transition Metals Practice Problems
We'll work through many practice problems where we name ionic compounds that contain transition metals using roman numerals. The names for transition metal compounds often have roman numerals in them, because the roman numerals indicate the charge on the transition metal. This is because transitional metal elements are able to make a variety of ions with different charge. In order to write the roman numeral for a transition metal compound, we need to work backwards, using the periodic table or a list of polyatomic ions to figure out what charge it has in that particular ionic compound.

I love your videos! I took Chemistry last semester and made an A. Also I was offered an SI Leader position from my Chemistry Professor! I owe my interest in Chemistry to your videos. Thanks for all your help!
When you dont understand chemistry in class but freakin Tyler Dewitt teaches better than your teacher🙏🏽👏🏽 I LOVE YOU thank you
Students must be crowding your class fast when they sign up for Chemistry classes. You're great.

Hi Tyler, I am currently taking Chemistry and this is the first time my teacher is teaching chemistry as well. Lets just say he is learning alot about teaching the class however, his way of teaching is a "One size fits all" method. I have to say that your videos have been a life savor for me. Thanks so much and keep doing what you are doing.
How did he become so good at explaining this stuff? He's better than a lot of teachers.
Thanks, King. I've literally been trying to figure this out for 3 days and I couldn't find a single person that would actually explain the concept. You do good work and I for one really appreciate it.
I know you have heard this before, but you are an inspiration and great teacher. Thanks for making these videos. :)
Hey Tyler, I just wanted to say how much I value your videos and I can honestly admit that your instruction has been the main reason I do so well on nomenclature test. You're my go-to guy on all things chemistry. Everyone deserves praise so thank you for all your help! Keep it p!
This is so helpful ! Thank you so much for making the time to help people like me, who have no idea whats going on in class, when the prof. goes super quick through these! You're awesome!
This is my first time doing chemistry and your videos are God-sent! I like your step-by-step explanations. They have been extremely helpful Thank you so much! Continue using your gift to help us all!
So thankful for your videos!!!! I know some are pretty obvious but you literally break it down until the last step. As a visual learner, this has helped me memorize this better! THANK YOU!
I love this guy, he explains everything so well! He makes the best chemistry videos hands down. Keep it up Tyler!
You have literally summed up my entire 2nd week of Organic Chem in a few videos.. I understood this more than my weeks worth of work 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 your awesome
You are an absolute lifesaver. I could not understand this at all until I watched your videos. Thank you.
I have watched your video on Ionic Compound, Polyatomic, Ionic Compounds with transition metals Intro and just finished this video and I am BLOWN away. I can't believe I actually NOW understand this. So wish other professors will get on board with your way of teaching Chemistry. Prayerfully I will be ready for Principles of Chemistry by Fall. I am spending the entire summer studying. Thank you so much. Your videos are a lifesaver.
Hour worth of your vid’s are saving me from missing a week of school
Hello Mr. DeWitt! I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to make these videos! Its refreshing to see teachers that are so passionate about teaching and want students to learn. Unfortunately, they are not thanked enough by their students and thats why I wanted to say thank you! Im preparing for a test on Tuesday and your videos are saving me right now haha. You are so thorough when explaining concepts and all the different ways that you could do them/common mistakes that are made which is extremely helpful since I tend to over think things! Please keep doing what your doing!
You're video always saves me from ignorance. Thank you very much!!! Keep up the good work and May God Bless You Always!!!
Heat of formation and combustion problems?! Entropy problems? Thank you, I could not be more appreciative of you, Tyler. You deserve endless teaching awards

Keep making these videos Dewitt. We really need more teachers like you. Furthermore, I think its much more convenient to learn over the internet than having to travel to school all the time. I understand socializing is a big factor in one's life. However, learning with this much efficiency, we will have more time to socialize than we ever did.
Seriously, I have been struggling to understand the charges in the transition metals, and asking my prof results in an answer of "well, because thats the charge." Ive learned more in 45 seconds in your video than I have from my prof all term. Thank you!
Dude i love you. I was literally struggling with this today and now i feel like the brightest kid in the class. Thank you
I like how you also show yourself as you explain because as you speak, your hands move with your words. I feel like its a lecture and I'm in tune
Thank you, Tyler! You've helped me a ton in Chemistry. I'm very new to the subject and I like how you explain things step-by-step!
You have no idea how I find this meaning complicated... thanks alot Tyler💯💯💯
this dude explain these chemical stuff sooo clear! love it
bro u r literally the best ........ u just taught me everything about ions , periodic table and lots of stuff in just 4-5 videos ............ thnx a bunch bro !!!!
Thank you so much for making these videos! I am watching them as a review for my midterms, and these videos teach me more than my own chemistry teacher teaches us!
I really have to thank you! This is my third video I'm watching made by you and You're videos helped me to understand sooo much!! Continue to do a great job
If I knew you in person I would totally take you out for lunch or dinner and will give you a six pack of your favorite beer to pay you back for making such helpful videos. Thank you so much!!!
Words can not express my gratitude towards you. THANK YOU!!!!
although these are old, they still help so much!! thanks for all the time you put into these videos :)

I'm From Qatar and I really understand from you. You are very amazing and make study easier for us thanks
I thank you for your solid explanation. I am from the great Egypt
I like your tutorial. I got to learn so many chemistry from this. Thank you !
how do you know what the possible charges are for the transition metals?
Thank you for helping me out with my class!!! Excellent video :)
how am I supposed to know how many charges a specific transition metal can have and which charges? for example: on the first problem that was solved on this video, chromium is able to have 3 different types of charges (2+,3+ and 6+). How do I learn how to distinguish that?
@brixtromartin3465

You must balance the charge with the nitrogen so the 2+ charge matches

@Gustavo Dutra, you don't distinguish the different ionic charges right off the bat. You first identify the ionic charge of an element that never changes. For example, Chlorine. It's ionic charge is always -1. Now that you've determined that, you have to make sure that the other element must have an ionic charge where the sum of both ionic charges equal to zero.
