Naming Cis / Trans Double Bonds

You need to figure out if the two "most important" groups are on the "same side" of the double bonds (CIS) or on "opposite sides" of the double bonds (TRANS). Then, the word 'cis' or 'trans' just goes in front of the regular molecule name.
i.e. cis-pent-2-ene, trans-but-2-ene.

    hi, can you do a video on determining the relationship of two isomers?...I am struggling with the difference between functional group isomers and constitutional isomers.

    At 4 min in the video... the compound you name non-3-ene.. why didn't you name it to give the csrbon one the double bond the lowest number? Instead of the longest chain? Isn't the double bond highest priority when numbering the cimpound ?

    On the cis-non-3-ene, how come the two carbons was higher priority than the 3 carbons? If the the 3 carbons was higher priority wouldn't it make it trans?

  • @habib18

    @habib18

    its 5 carbons on the left side compared to two carbons, so the priority would go to the section that has the highest carbon chain

    2-pentene, or pent-2-ene (same molecule, different naming convention) has five carbon atoms with a double bond between carbons 2 and 3.

    2-Pentene is the old way of naming it. Pent-2-ene follows the new rule of IUPAC to name it. Either way it's the same molecule .

    You can, but it isn't appropriate to be used now as it is the old pattern of nomenclature.
