how come OH is always 1 on cycloalkanes, but depending on where it is located in a regular alkane its not always 1? Is it because theres only 2 ways to count on alkanes (left to right) but at least 6-12 ways to count on cycloalkane rings?

It is because Methoxy is the substituent and butanol is the parent chain because it contains more carbons. Technically the parent chain is butane, but it is changed to butanol due to the -OH group. In IUPAC the substituent comes before the parent chain.

how do we know when to put "e" or get rid of "e". from examples, you used pentan and hexan"e"

If you have one hydroxy (-OH) group, you dont use the 'e'. For example, Butan-ol but I you have more thatn one hydroxy group, then you use and 'e' and specify the number of hydroxy groups you have by usingthe prefix di, tri, etc. before -ol. For example HO-H2C-CH2-OH would be Ethan'e'-1,2 diol.

ortho- is used when the substituent is right next to the OH- group meta- is used when the substituent is 1 carbon away from the OH- para- is used when the substituent is 2 carbons away from the OH- group (or opposite with the OH- group)

Methane is CH4. Methyl is CH3. Methyl is methane without a hydrogen so it can form a single bond to attach to the molecule with the remaining electron on the carbon. Ethane is C2H6. Ethyl is C2H5, or CH2CH3. Ethyl is ethane without a hydrogen so it can form a single bond to attach to the molecule with the remaining electron on the carbon. When he called it ethyl he was right.

So in a structure consisting of an alkyl substituent, a double bond, a triple bond, a halogen substituent, a hydroxyl substituent and an alkoxy substituent all at different postions along the parent carbon chain, what will be the order of priorities when numbering the parent chain?

Hydroxyl takes priority, everything else is given the numbers based on giving the hydroxyl group the lowest number

That’s an ether, not an ester. Ethers do not have priority over triple bonds.

Pretty late reply, but, the last line is a representation of the bond between the last carbon atom to the OH group. The line may confuse you to think it's another carbon atom along with which OH is attached, but it is not So, /\/OH = Propanol, NOT Butanol /\/\/OH = Pentanol , NOT Hexanol

Because there are 2 hydroxyl groups(OH) and we name it like "ol" and di means "2" so that's why it is hexane di ol:) I hope u get it

If you come up with 1-methyl you probably haven't found the correct parent carbon chain. So in short no, you can't call it that.

no dear. Naming is done mainly by knowing the longest continuous carbon chain first which gives the parent name. Besides, in alcohols the OH group is given a number meaning it's a substituent but with your naming that means there's a methyl group as a substituent and it's on carbon 1.
