Namibia - Swapo To Call General Elections

(8 Dec 1994) Namibia's ruling SWAPO movement announced on Wednesday (7/12)
that it is calling the country's first general elections since
independence in 1989. Making the announcement, Mines Minister
Adimba Toivo ja Toivo said his government had done extremely well
in adopting national reconciliation. Toivo told South African
television that the government was now working towards economic
independence. But the opposition Democratic Turnhalle Alliance
(DTA) president Mishake Muyongo accused SWAPO of corruption and of being indecisive. SWAPO leader and president of Namibia, Sam Nujoma,
maintained that his party was the backbone of development in
Namibia, emphasising the need to combat poverty, disease,
unemployment and ignorance."I must admit we still have big
problems we inherited from apartheid colonialism," he said. "But
SWAPO has the ability to overcome these."
