Naima - Coltrane - Solo Jazz Guitar Chord Melody - MESA Mark V 25 - CabClone

Музыка

I've recently acquired the Mesa Mark V 25 (10" speaker) and wanted to see if I could achieve a good warm tone using the XLR DI.
Here is Naima by J. Coltrane - a haunting composition - played with my Gibson ES-175.

Enjoy!

Serious question. This guy’s tone seems to have more gain in it than I would’ve expected, but then I don’t know much about jazz guitar. Is this common?

Player’s sounds vary. Some favour some degree of gain (Rosenwinkle, Metheny, Kreisberg, Holdsworth), though I’d agree that many ‘classic’ jazz players opted for a very clean sound - likely because amps that were being used in 50’s didn’t have a very desirable overdrive. I didn’t consider the gain much for this short video - I just sent the amp and went for it! Cheers.

Very nice. Very smooth. But am I the only jazz guitarist who uses flatwounds because I can't tolerate string noise?

No. I hate it. My teacher the late Harry Leahey could lift his fingers and put them down so fast you never heard any string noise even though he used round wounds.
