Should you squeeze glutes at the top of sumo dls & rdls?
Squeeze whatever muscle you want to work. As hard as possible.
I get hip flexors pain when pulling sumo
try a narrower stance, and work on your adductor/abductors (strength and flexibility) until you can open your hips more.
Avoid sumo and pull conventional OR try using a hex/trap bar!

Also there is never any need to force a movement that doesn't work for your physiology

Mixed grip. Standard grip for heavy reps along with hook grip.
Sumo doesn't count, it's cheating
