I'd hate to think how many splints the horses would have. It's a beautiful site seeing horses en-masse, but the injuries and splints they could suffer, would fr out watching this 'run'.

I would say it's to warn anyone that might be in the way to get out of the way

I've never even ridden a horse and I know this is really bad for them

Not really it's only a short trip so it doesn't cause any damage and these horse are used to far worse terrain
