nagamaki - discussion

Музыка

I am not an expert on this topic and have done a small amount of research on it.
I have a lot of fun collecting these weapons and the nagamaki is just a super unique blade.
I consider these three swords nagamaki but the framework for japanese style blades is very loose from the era these are based upon. I enjoy the more unique and older style weapons because i find them very mysterious.

Nagamaki - (Long Wrapping) Surviving period examples have the blade length and hilt length almost equal. Half blade, half handle. I've noticed a lot of vendors recently misspeaking on the topic of "nagamaki" vs "nodachi". They are not the same. Uesugi Kenshin was renowned for his corps of nagamaki users. That's a good place to start, when researching the weapon. Well done. Subbed. I like big blades, and I cannot lie.

Great video, from what I found, there was no set standards to the nagamaki, I can see the handle being cut down to 16 inches, especially if you were in a more public place with buildings, a lot easier to move around.

yeah from a lot of readings they were just making weapons for various needs and commissions from lords and samurai and various businessmen i believe it wasn’t until the country shut down that the rules began to become more and more restrictive

I'm no expert, but I've believed Nagamaki was more equal length blade and handle like the Musashi. But if Japanese weapons have taught us anything, it's that there was a surprising amount of variation in weapons of all classifications as weapons are incredibly personal. Sidenote I love discussion videos. Thanks for posting this.

@@gargoylesblade Yeah, that's why I wouldnt lord over someone for saying a shorter handled one wasnt the real deal. I'm sure it happened, mightve even been fairly common.

@@TONEDEAFSOUND That's pretty sick. I have to admit I'm real curious about one as someone who's real comfortable with a staff, but I imagine not using grip changes would be its own adjustment. Finances being limited we have to pick and choose what we want to shoot for in our collection, and I'll likely never own one but it'll be a curiousity. I'm going to keep living vicariously through you brother so keep doing your thing!

@@Jaedeok82 for this specific one i’ll be honest i did a payment plan for it because it’s on the upper end my goal was to get as much variety as physically possible with geometry and size and im really happy with it and your totally right there’s literally so much we can choose from so it’s really a good idea to find what you want and gun for it

nagamaki can be converted in to a wearable sword with a shorter hilt if the massive handle broke in half on impact since they don't traditionally have full length tangs

i bet that happened a good amount. tho i have seen historical nodachi and nagamaki with very long tangs that have two pin holes and extend very far down the handle

yeah that one actually looks quite good for the price i paid $400 for this large nagamaki i got it from musashi it has a 1045 blade but it cuts better than most my other swords haha the one by swordier would be a good place to start tho it’s got a more usable blade to handle ration
