NAD D3020 V2 vs Yamaha WXA-50 Amplifier Sound Demo

Ғылым және технология

NAD D3020 V2 vs Yamaha WXA-50 difference is much more noticeable in real life. Dynamics, sound-stage, micro details... to really hear these, you simply have to hear them in person. This is meant for fun and noticing some tonal differences that survived Microphone recording/KZread compression/Your own gear signature. Have fun!

    It's great that you started doing this. Despite all the pitfalls of different space, gear, mics, algorithms etc. the NAD sounds more controlled, tighter and cleaner with bass, but at the same time considerably thinner. I hope that's roughly how they both sound over there. A few objections if I may. First male voice is not a raspy voice. That's almost as mellow and clean as it gets. Louis Armstrong, Bruce Springsteen, Bryan Adams, Leslie West of Mountain, Graham Bonnet of Rainbow and solo, Dan McCafferty of Nazareth, Brian Johnson of ACDC, Richie Kotzen, George Thorogood, John Campbell, Johnny Winter, Troy Redfern, Eric Sardinas. Also you should have left Track 3 at the end, when full band's playing, to also be played by the NAD. A little longer, wouldn't hurt either. Yamaha sounds louder. Not sure, may be just me.

    I run that NAD with some Klipsch RP-400Ms, which are fairly bright and smiley, so the combo works out pretty good. I bet the Yamaha would sound slightly harsher with those speakers. I rarely use the bass boost feature, only on some tracks that seem to be lacking.

    I have not listened to this with headphones, just played it on my speakers. Some tracks seem to only have a change of picture of amp but there is a difference in track 3 and 5, almost an illusion that it goes from mono to stereo.

    Great video! Thanks! With the KEFs I prefer the NAD. Much more balanced and refined than the Yamaha which is a bit bright and shouty. I have the NAD (temporarily) with some old Wharfedales and the result is kinda dark and boring. So you were right in your review, the NAD needs a neutral/bright speaker to shine. And I can imagine the Yamaha doing great with some warmish speakers. Anyone tried the NAD with Fyne Audio?

    Again I opened and listened to this test. The NAD sounds more musical and the passages are more controlled. The brighter crispy souds from Yamaha is for those who like this character. But... when the listening fatigue sets in, I rather expect it from the Yamaha. I prefer the more musical and detailed NAD.

    Yamaha sounded wider with a more forward presentation with a slight lean towards heavier mid bass/bass and airy highs. I preferred female vocals on the Yamaha and with the strings I sort of preferred the NAD as it was a bit tighter and more controlled in the midbass/bass area. That's what I picked out anyway! Listening on iFi Zen Dac/Amp with Meze 99 Noir. Rankings for me: Track 1 - Neither was a favorite Track 2 - Yamaha Track 3 - Yamaha Track 4 - Lean towards NAD Track 5 - Yamaha

    Nad sounds slightly better to my ears,but yamaha is a real "swiss knife" amp for a small to medium room. I am looking forward for a mkii version,with a better dac chip and the latest bluetooth version.The wxc-50,which is the preamp-player (variable or fixed output) version,is more flexible,because you can combine it with a pair of active speakers.I am also looking forward for a mkii version.

    I have the NAD arriving in the mail today along with KEF Q150's. I also have a Rega RP1 Performance Pack and Fono Mini preamp. I bought the NAD on the back of great reviews from Whathifi and Stereophile. They will be used in a small, slightly over 100 square foot room, with the KEF's on speaker stands six feet apart, possibly with an inexpensive Klipsch sub. I will be interested to see how they sound. I'm slightly regretting not getting the Yamaha instead because I already have a phono preamp, and I'd like to stream through wifi and not bluetooth, although I do prefer a warmer sound. We'll see if I keep or return!

    What Input is used on both of these amps? (Edit: Nevermind, probably AUX) Since BD movies now may have DTS HD MA which is a lossless audio, i decided to invest so I purchased NAD d3020 v2 and paired it with Elacs DBR62. Source is PC over Optical SPDIF and AUX. The kicker for me was that AUX from internal PC soundcard sounds much better than external DAC over SPDIF in d3020... PC just have Realtek ALC1220d, while mobo manufacturer used Nichicon caps for audio, but still nothing fancy. Bottomline for me is that internal DAC in d3020 sound much more flatter compared to PC soundcard, in similar manner to this video.

    Liked the Yamaha sound better than NAD's. When I was deciding, I compared it also with BlueSound Powernode 2i - bought the Yamaha because of a more dynamic sound, although Powernode has a bit more features and BlueOS is a better software controller than MusicCast. In your opinion and experience, do you think LS50s are the best combo with the WXA-50, or you can think of a better speaker match? Thanks Vlada

  • @iiWiReviews

    @iiWiReviews

    Yeah, it's very dynamic and lively sounding, I was pleasantly surprised and preferred it to NAD. Regarding LS50, it controls them quite good and level of details is great, but the sound is a bit on the dry side when direct sound mode is used. That said, when I use MusicCast DSP and Enhancer is enabled (whatever that is), sound becomes just a bit juicier and fuller, and that sounds really good with LS50s to my ears. But if you're a purist and don't want to use DSP, I would ideally go for a little darker and less forward speakers, for example Q350 would match better tonally in my opinion.

    Listening on Sennheiser 650's. I'm finding the NAD a bit thin and recessed and lacking body. The Yamaha is warmer and more engaging but has an airy colouring. Both have good detail but doing it differently. It's like listening to something a bit weak and something trying a bit too hard. ATM I'm tossing up between the two and I'm now leaning more towards the Yamaha because of the bass, maybe I'll listen to it all again! Taste is subjective. Thanks for posting!

  • @stephenbailey9969
    @stephenbailey99693 жыл бұрын

    Both sound pretty natural. Combine the excellent bass and mids of the NAD with the treble of the Yamaha (which gives the illusion of more space) and that would be the 'complete' amp. (Does this NAD have tone controls that might accomplish something similar? I know the higher models have bass and treble controls.)

  • @iiWiReviews

    NAD has only bass boost, it's subtle and not adjustable in any way, gives just a bit more oomph. Yamaha has tone and DSP controls inside its streamer section (but not for other inputs).

    It's a funny thing actually, they're volume matched with 1 kHz tone... and I double-checked because with music Yamaha did sound slightly louder with some tracks or at least more forward to my ears. But the test tone was showing the same volume level so I supposed that the perceived difference in loudness is due to different handling of dynamics, transients, etc. In reality, Yamaha does sound punchier and more dynamic to my ears while NAD is more restrained. It seems that restraint comes out as a slightly lower volume through the recording. This begs the question - can we really fully volume match components using just a single tone. It seems not because music is not made of a single flat tone.

    Listening to this on a pair of LS50W set to highest res on a macbook air. Track 3: very noticeable difference in the female focal. NAD D3020 sounds like she's singing in a sound treated room with lil reverb "airy". Yamaha WXA-50 sounds more "airy" and bigger for her vocals. It's pretty noticeable. Imagine a hall reverb from 1-100. NAD would be at 10 while the Yamaha is at 50. This is not just true for the vocals but also for the bassy beat track 5. Beats on the Yamaha was just more airy and open. With that airiness, you can feel the focus of the beats and the punchiness comes through. The NAD sounds clear but without that openness with the beats sounding compressed and closer together in both dynamics and perceived space. Conclusion: Yamaha sounds airy and "sweeter" than the NAD and is the clear winner imo.
