N62 & N62TU Valve Stem Seal Tool Kit

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Problem:
You have a smoking BMW due to bad valve stem seals. The valve stem seal problem is that the old valve stem seal becomes hard over time and doesn’t provide the proper seal between the seal and stem. This allows oil to pass through and enter the combustion chamber and exhaust. The oil consumption here is bad for a lot of different reasons. Obviously smoking, but also decreased catalytic converter life. We’ve seen a number of cars that have set CAT inefficiency codes and these codes can go away if you replace the seals if done in time.
Solution:
Use the AGA N62 Valve Stem Seal Tool Kit. Perform the Valve Stem Seal Repair without removing the engine, cylinder heads, or cams. This repair not only saves you hours of labor, but also eliminates having to have thousands of dollars invested in cam timing tools. This is one of the few tools a shop can buy and recover the cost already on the 1st job performed.
Benefit:
Eliminates smoking from the exhaust, reduces risk of damaging cat converters and plugging the secondary air injection. It also allows the car to pass Smog. No need to remove Intake or exhaust cams or buy expensive valve timing tool. There is no longer a risk of setting the cam timing incorrectly. Plus, you have the assurance of being able to sell the valve stem job to the customer, rather then having them go to another shop for the repair.
Please see the below time sheet for specific procedures:
- 03:40 min. Valve covers remove
- 04:24 min. Tools needed
- 05:25 min. Install spark plug hole plugs
- 06:02 min. Install brushes to plug oil drain holes
- 06:16 min. Intake plates
- 07:36 min. Cylinder on TDC
- 08:58 min. Chart of tools
- 10:30 min. Spring compression
- 12:35 min. Leak down / air in cylinder
- 13:38 min. Valve spring removal
- 13:55 min. Valve stem seal replacement
- 14:39 min. Valve spring and retainer install
- 15:18 min. Valve keeper installation tool
- 17:52 min. Valve keeper tool demo
- 18:42 min. Valve keeper install in head

    Just finished my 3rd N62 engine,, it has become a more easy job every time, i have seen this job done the conventional way in other shops, and boy this is so much better!!!! I would just add two things that work so much better for me: 1: work with rope ínstead of compressed air, 2: remove camshaft sensors before takin out valve covers, a little tricky but better and easier for the valve covers goin in and out.

  • @rayrodriguez8886

    @rayrodriguez8886

    P.I. M. With compressed air there are many things that can go wrong, so just before reaching the top dead center I introduce rope to fill the cylinder and then gently compress from the crankshaft, and to lower the valves you only go back a little from the crankshaft, of course to take out the rock arms

    Everyone at AGA is very helpful. They have a CS number where you can ask them or Rich anything to guide you through the process. This job is not for the of . Personally, I had dropped keepers, searched, crawled inside, and on top of the engine, trying to see. One thing I've found that is extremely useful is prep the area with small cloth/paper towels that can catch anything you drop. An endoscope camera is extremely helpful along with small lights to help keep your work area well lit.

    Pre 96 Ford 4.6L V8s had this EXACT problem. Hard valve seals, smoke, after 100K miles. Amazing how BMW let this happen. I have a chance to get a cheap 7 series with this problem. Smokes like a chimney. Dealer wants like 5K to do it. I thought I was looking at a Ford V8 DOHC engine, down to the beehive spring. The procedure is identical. Ez valve cover removal(crown vics need the evaporator and brake booster out). That compressor tool is awesome. The Ford has 2 primitive tools for intake and exhaust, and you have to use a breaker bar as a lever against the cam and spring while you fish out the keepers(not fun). I bet your tool would work for Ford too, definitely a market for that. Do you sell that part alone? I also use thick rope in the cyl head and bring it up to TDC. Had a bad experience once with air. Also, are the guides usually trashed? That was a not-so common issue with the early Ford SOHC engine. I also like the rope method because you can feel if the valve has play.

    Crown Vics DO NOT need removal of booster or hvac box. Also the valvetronic system makes the intake valves more laborious than on the Ford modular V8. Not to mention most Ford applications have half the number of valves. All BMW N series 8's have 32 valves with crappy seals.

    An ambiguity with the Keeper Installation Tool exists at about 15:25 into the video. It says to "...remember to have the fat side of the keeper facing up" while the presenter is holding the tool upside down to load it. This is confusing and could mislead a newbie. The keepers must be inserted into the tool with the fat side down, narrow side up so when they are installed on the valve the fat side is up.

    +Ribhi Kamal Get your engine really nice and hot by driving the car for about a half hour, then park it and let it idle for about 15 minutes without touching the gas pedal at all. Now go in the car and give it a quick wide open throttle for a split second. If you have a bunch of smoke coming out with that burned oil smell out your tail pipe you know you have this problem. This is a good way of telling before it becomes so bad that it's always smoking.

    After installing the valve stem seal, along with the keepers, why is the air pressure relieved if you are going to compress it again to install the rockers? What is holding the valve up? Just the valve stem seal? Hope that makes sense lol. Just a bit confused.

  • @AGATools

    @AGATools

    Yes, the seal has enough tension to keep the valve up. If you don't relieve the air, you can't compress the valve and spring to install the rocker arm.

    You mention replacing the lifters "if they are bad". Given that there are 32 of them and they cost $25~/lifter how do I tell if any particular one is bad? I have a 745i with about 105k miles on it and it occasionally smokes and regularly throws P0492 even after using your Secondary Air Cleaning tool - no complaints on the SAC tool as it worked great but the valve stem seals are still forcing the code (which is always P0492).

  • @6ggtov72

    @6ggtov72

    7 жыл бұрын

    Bill Riffert The P0492 DTC is not related to the valve guide seals. it is a conditional code for sec air flow to bank 2. The plastic air pipe sometimes cracks and on occasion I see that the fittings detach from the air valves at the back of the heads. If you're positive that the sec air piping is in tact, then more than likely you have clogged ports. The chemical and brush kits you see on the internet will work *sometimes* The permanent fix to this problem (if clogged ports is your problem) is to manually clean them. So either remove the heads individually or remove the engine assembly. the latter is easier and should be cheaper. if the heads are removed, then the exhaust valves need to also be removed. I don't suggest this route as its tremendous work. good luck wherever you may go.

    What about checking the valve guide clearance?? BMW has released videos in the past for the N62 and checking the clearance. We have seen several N62 with worn guides, if your guides are worn you will be in for a nasty surprise down the road when the valve seal starts leaking again. A short cut like this is a true life saver, but it is somewhat risky. Could save the day if the guides are in good condition though.

  • @AGATools

    @AGATools

    Brent, after extensive R&D and doing many N62 valve stem seal (We did 142 valve stem seal jobs in 2016), the guides are usually never worn. Our highly experienced tech do test to see if the guides are bad, but out of the 100 cars we have done, only 1 needed guides.

    I was under the impression the valve guides in the E62 are not replaceable. The online BMW factory shop service manual I found (European version) showed replacing the valves when the stem to guide clearances gets sloppy, suggesting strongly the the stems wear but not the guides themselves. What is the reality here?

    Hi, so though this kit isn't made for those engines. However, we have MINI dealerships using this kit for those engines. You have to modify some cam brackets and the compression screw with the foots. We personally don't know the exact details but it can be done.

    I have a 2010 550i and about 6 months ago I started having intermittent smoke happen only if idling for a while. It's been eating up a lot of oil over the last year as well. I just had a BMW dealership estimate the cost of valve guide seals repairs and I was quoted $14,248.24. WTF?!!! That's 40 hrs of labor and $5100 in parts. The repairs are more than what my BMW is worth.

  • @AGATools

    TheFreeg8407, That is incorrect. White smoke blowing out of the exhaust is a tell tale sign of bad valve stem seals. The stem seals are deteriorating, causing oil to get into the combustion chamber, causing white smoke. If you have any questions please feel free to call Rich at 760-738-4084. This kit is expensive to rent and a pain in the ass to use. You only need a long socket that fits the width of the spring. In the inside of the socket you glue a strong magnet that won't be in the way and hit the valvepin once you hammer easily on the socket. The magnet inside of it will catch the lockers so it has to be strong enough to suck the lockers so that they don't fall into the engine. After you change the seal you take the spring and compress it and put a stripe on each side while spring being in a compressed state. Don't stripe it all the way to the bottom because then then it won't lay flat on the seal. When you have the spring and the lockers in place you just cut the stripes and remove them out of the way and you are done 👍

Should i go on ?

    Art, the keeper tool does get a bit tricky, but once you know how to put the keepers in, it's a walk in the park after that. With the valve not sealing, was this on intake or exhaust side? Because if it is the intake side, these engines are known to have issues with the valve sealing on the intake side once the rocker arms go back on. What we like to do is finish the intake valve seals and install the rocker arms all at the end.
