N-SSA Spring Civil War Shooting Competition: Howitzers and Mortars,
Ойын-сауық
Join me and my friend Rob as we attend the annual shooting competition held at Fort Shenandoah, Winchester Virginia by the North-South Skirmish Association. This is an organization that boasts members from all over the country and have been around for about 70 years. They shoot original (and some replicas) Civil War era muskets, carbines, cannons, mortars and more. This is a three day event and I broke the videos down into one for each day. I hope you enjoy. It's free and open to the public.

Mortar round = golfing with bombs
Good to see those old guns in action. It is really amazing that they are still functioning after all of these years. Thanks for sharing this because if you didn't a bunch of us would never get to see these guns in action. I have so many family members that fought in the Civil War on both sides that I have lost count. Every time I see guns like this it makes me shudder to think that they faced weapons such as these and most lived to tell about it, tho some did not. Thanks again Beau you always find interesting things to share.
@ 6:58. what a kick!!! I can see why Beau finds all the civil war relics, when they roll back, say like in a creek or ford! Thanks for Sharing!
Thanks for recording this, I love reenactments and old artillery type events.
I miss Ft. Shenandoah..this makes me homesick...competed there over ten years, camped in Area 4. Had good neighbors; the Southampton Greys, 110th OVI, and the Hazelwood Vounteers. Wonderful bunch of folks in the N-SSA.
Wow, Chigg. That was awesome! Thanks !
its awesome to see grown men and women playing dress up, and they are so serious about it too!
Awesome vid, thank you for sharing 😊
Holy smokes!! That looks like a blast!!! Thanks for taking us with you!!

That was cool thanks
The book written by Arthur Manigault, titled "Siege Train" is a period work from Charleston Harbor, giving not only data on trajectory but also the earthen works built to hold the artillery. Composed in Diary briefs by Manigault himself, it is a fascinating look from inside the lines of defense for those searching for in-depth details.
You always look way younger when you shave the manfluff back Chigg. Throws me off and makes me check the date stamp every time haha :P keep doin what you do!
Great video. My husband loved it. Looking good with your ears lowered.
Awesome video
Can't imagine doing battle with those things! Love the shorter hair 💜 ...keep the goatee.....don't loose it...please! As always....enjoy your videos...no matter what they are. Don't forget your way back home....so you can play in the creeks and caves again 😃
excellent
They used to have these matches at the Old Saratoga Muzzleloading Club in Saratoga, NY but they don't bother with the cannons anymore. The NSSA still shoots there but no artillery units come there. They had the same range set up, 200 yards. I have a small mortar myself that's a smaller coehorn, shoots pretty well, would like to compete with it, but no one to and I don't know enough guys to even get a team together for with the NSSA.
Oh WOW!!!! That looks like a lot of fun. I've never been to anything like that, bet you could feel the ground shake on those blasts!! There's a battlefield about 50 miles from us and they do reenactments sometimes but I don't know if they shoot off cannons....guess I need to find out...hummm

Even places that shoot a "salute" blank round don't reproduce the blast of an actual projectile shot. Although these "big guns" are nothing compared to modern cannon and tank guns.
I was there and shot muskets and carbines I am in the Nansemond Guards
Nice haircut....about time !!
Am I third? Don't know don't care. Just happy he's still alive!
nice vid chigg
You are super cool all your videos 😊😜😍😘😁😄😄
Very interesting as all your vids are but way too short.. Quest: Where do they get their cannon balls for this competition? Do they back up to your garage an load up?

Nice Hair Cut!
Oh man I missed it i belong to the conservation club across the street and know a couple guys that shoot over there . Would have liked to meet the Chig love your videos keep up the good work
I've been near those things when they go off and it feels like being hit in the chest with a big ol' hammer. I quickly decided to move farther away.
I was near penny packer mills today in Pennsylvania and they had a reenactment. Let me tell you this video does these guns zero justice. I was at least 2 miles away and I could feel a cannon blast in my ears. I plan on attending the next one.

Hey Beau. Great video as always! Curious if you have ever participated in a civil war reenactment? All the best
that was really awesome. do they still have reenactments? that would be cool to see too.
Cool
great video. But why are people so focused on being first in the comments? that is the dumbest shit i have even seen be #1 in life then you can be proud
a tour guide at Gettysburg told me that the rifled guns rolled back 6 feet, I think he was thinking of the howitzers based on this video
@ 7:25 timestamp was that their powder supply in the box under the gun that got burned up?

SEEE!!
Hey Beau, I recently dug 3 Minie Balls and I'm having trouble identifying whether or not they are fired, dropped, or carved? Can you help? Thanks
There's some civil war ordinance for you to detect Beau...
How's the pulling of that string fire it?
proof they're really good, @ 8:08 Thanks Chigg !!!! HIT THE LIKE BUTTON !!!!
I wonder how far those canons rolled with a full load. You didn't want to be in front or behind those things.
dude in the grey shirt is straight mean muggin
I had a dream where , I was in this fort being attacked by pirets and I was the sponge guy. after a while we ran out of powder so i was running around and I saw my math teacher and we talk to the guy on top of the fort who was watching the battle and rent in woke up
One thing for sure their not using anywhere near the full powder load in those cannons. Can't blame them the Civil War cannons did have a habit of exploding sometimes.
I love reenacting. I use to do a bit of it myself. What is difficult to reproduce however, is the youth of the actual combatants. It's not realistic to expect young people to be committed to such an expensive hobby. The US civil war did have old guys in their 30s among the ranks, but it was mostly fought by young men and boys.

Chig have you found mortar rounds?
Chigg, I'm not familiar with all the different uniforms they were wearing. Can you enlighten us as to which company or even state they were representing? The North and South were the Blue and the Gray. What were the brown/tan uniforms? Thanks, great video.

Sally Ann the tan was butternut from the south
Do the cannon crews retrieve their projectiles after the meet to reuse or melt down and recast? How about the rifles/muskets?
@silvermediastudio

Yes for the cannon rounds, they are dug out in the evening before dinner. The small arms lead is left in the berm, either picked out by industrious re-loaders, or every so often they use heavier machinery to sift it out and re-build the berm. It's a private range, and they maintain it extremely well.
did the air smell life sulfur?
You definitely seem to be in your eliment
well i suppose if we need to defend our selves against RONK we might be able to do it with some of those cannon
i just went to a battle reanactment on Saturday night at stoney creek battlefield for the war of 1812

7:27 why did he have powder charges on the ground underneath the cannon ? you can see one of the charges catching fire...isn't that a big no no in safety?
How long did they make them wait between charges?
@silvermediastudio

It's a competition. The teams have a set amount of time to make hits on targets. Fastest time wins.
chigg, have you ever found a mortar?
#earlysquad
Nothing like putting hot lead downrange
7:34 what was that secondary detonation?

Looks to be a charge they left on the ground, or they fed double by accident. Whatever it was, it wasn't supposed to happen. That team screwed up, lucky nobody was hurt.
