After reading about a 20p with no date, I emptied a gallon bottle of loose change, I found two of them, I sent one to auction in Derbyshire and it sold for £150 , about nine years ago, I have still got the other 20p which is in better condition.

I got a Shakespeare Tragedies with inscription error given to me in my change at Tesco. I’ve also got an undated 20p. I’m constantly looking and asking for different coins in my change so I’ll be looking for more error coins in future. I love collecting coins and finding error ones in my change is like finding gold.

Great video i have two for king and country edge inscription error Shakespear £2 the research i have done seems that they have been found in the the north of England but the most have been found in Scotland I am in Cumbria thinking that they are lot rarer than the undated 20p rather than the 250000 20p's more likely only a few thousand as only tracked around a twenty

I'm confused about how the incorrect edges are 'mis-strikes'? Surely they fall square into your definition of an error... The word 'silver' should be used carefully as well, if the 2p was struck on a 10p blank then it wasn't a silver one was it? Or was it a silver blank? Confusing, especially when it apparently turns into a £2 at some point (we all make mistakes lol). Die rotations not worth mentioning? Interesting video...

Hi there! We only included a selection of some of the myths and mis-strikes surrounding our UK coins as there would be quite a lot to cover if we did them all! Perhaps we can cover some more in another video if Change Checkers would like to see one?! Good spot on the mention of the 'silver £2', it was an unfortunate slip of the tongue on my part, hence the little note on the video that says *2p :) Edge inscriptions are put onto the coin blank before the design is struck onto the coin, meaning there's potentially millions of blanks with no design struck onto them yet, with an edge inscription on them. Due to the quantity of coins that are struck, it is fairly likely that some will slip through the net and will end up with the incorrect design struck onto them. As this is a result of mass production, that's what deems it as a mis-strike, as opposed to a human error. A human error could include someone in the factory putting the wrong die on the machine before the coins are struck. Errors and mis-strikes certainly make for great collecting and discussions, just like this one! Hope this helps to clarify. Alex

@@ChangeChecker Thanks for the detailed reply! Though I'm still confused whether the 2p was struck on a silver coloured blank (CuproNickel/Nickel plated steel) or a precious metal silver blank. ;) And I'm still not quite buying the fact that the incorrect edge ending up on the coin isn't human error though! Someone's meant to be checking them right? haha Keep up the great work Alex and Co!

Many of these mis-strikes won't add value to the coin unless a collector is specifically interested in them. The ones to look out for are incorrect dates or metals as these are true errors.

Hi Gemma, We'd advise heading to secondary market sites and checking recently sold listings for the undated 20p. This will give you an indication of how much collectors are prepared to spend on your coin at the moment. It's a great addition to your collection so it might be worth holding onto for a little while longer! Thanks, Alex
