    I was also confused with this, but the dealership in Norway was well informed. Let the engine work easy. Dont think to much of the rpm. Ofcourse not full throttle. And use all gears. Dont stay in the same rpm all the time. Good video Vikas :)

    The reason for the hard break in period is for the following reasons:(1) to allow all the bearings, moving parts such as selector forks, etc. settle into place. (2) For the period before the first service the oil used is of a lower lubrication grade so that the moving parts can wear in faster. (On expensive bikes the motors are run in past this stage). (3) New cylinder bores need to build up a glaze caused by hot engine oil. (4) The motor or whole bike might have that one in a thousand bad part that slipped past quality control. You don't want to find out that the gear selector fork, bearing, etc. could not take the extra stress caused by the rider thrashing the life out of a brand new tight motor at a high speed when it locks up!! (5) The mechanics in the bike shop that assembeled the bike out of the crate might have forgotten to tigghten something up or were distracted partway through a job on the bike and forgot to finish the task. I've seen a brand new Yamaha YB100 have all its engine bolts fall out and the motor start to come out of the frame during its first 500 miles from the showroom. A Suzuki GSX750R have the sump plug fall out directly after the first service on the way home from the dealership. I came around the corner to be greeted by a 1/2 mile of engine oil along the road and a pissed off owner sat by his bike. (6) Most importantly the oil in a new motor is highly contaminated with dirt, metal crap, swarf, etc. during the first stage of breaking / running in and will overheat a lot easier than normal as the oil filter clogs up and stifles free oil flow.

    Seems you know your stuff. So would you agree with the guy in the video? I did 160km today because I had to get home from the dealership. I will read the manual tomorrow. I asked about the break in at the dealer and nobody had any clue... the rev gauge actually starts blinking on the duke 390 at around 6000 rpm, so it’s telling me to not go over. The only questions I have is what should be my lowest rpm and what is better. Stable cruising speeds or different speeds.

    I experienced the 5th point you said today itself with my new Bajaj Pulsar 250. I took the motorbike at 80kmph, 5000rpm, and engine oil started to leak. Took it to service center and found out that oil pressure switch wasn't tightened properly at the factory. But I wonder if I wouldn't have pushed the motorcycle slightly, how would I have come to know about this?

    Great vid but one thing you missed is that run in is needed for is work hardening. Work hardening is a process by which when a metal is stressed and de stressed, it hardens over time. kind of like when you bend a paper clip back and forth it will slow get harder to bend. But everything else you mentioned is 101% correct. Best practice is to read the owners manual and do what it says.

    irrelavant13 that's what work hardening does. metal can be worked until it become brittle and breaks. in this sense, the use of the word hardening refers to the molecular structure of the metal becoming less flexible, friction increases in the molecular chain generating heat and weakening the bonds. Eventually the yield strength is reach and the metal becomes fatigued and breaks.

    Even I had done the same techniques for my R3 (took it to 148kmph too xD) and not listening to the dealer. Glad to hear the same techniques from you too! Only the first 100-150 are a bit crucial, since the minute filings from the cylinder and piston cannot be smoothened even by precise machines. After 150kms, you can revv the bike beyond the specified rpm limit, without damaging the engine.

    You also need to variate the rpm with a new engine. Don't stress it and when you do eventually have it ran in dont just go balls to the wall max rpm full throttle, gently ease the engine up to higher and higher speeds and at that level of rpm the piston is reaching a slightly new part of the cylinder. Its not a great idea to sit at one constant rpm for long periods of time either while running in. Or so my Yamaha manual says.

    Wait, piston is reaching a new part of the cylinder? How is that possible? The stroke length remains the same irrespective of the rpm. Varying the rpm results in variation of friction. This varying rpm would also remove the microscopic unevenness from the cylinder and piston and will make the new engine perform good both at low and high rpm's in the future.

    Good video on how to drive during the break in period. Well I think instead of riding on highways, I'll prefer taking my bike on a valley or a road with lots of twists and turns which requires quick acceleration and deceleration so that the piston and the chamber get well acquainted with each other. But it's a good video for busting myths. And bikers no need to argue with the mechanics in dealership when you get a new bike. Just nod to whatever they say and you know what to do after that. Happy riding 🤗

    A racer will do almost anything in search of an advantage over the competition, even if it means risking life, limb and machinery: Everything from removing mufflers and running dangerous gas blends to questionable oil additives and even secretly (against the rulebook) tuning a motor or skipping meals to reduce weight. Another old trick in the racer’s book is to remove the air filter in hopes of cutting the inlet restriction, thus increasing power. A quick search of the ever resourceful Inter-web revealed that this old trick has stretched far beyond the track as many people are even ditching the filters on their streetbikes. Some claim they “felt” a sizeable increase in power while others noted little to no seat-of-the pants improvements. Although running without an air filter on the street can be risky (more on that later), we decided it was time to put this old racing folklore to the test on the dyno. Was it worth a few more ponies? On the dyno To keep things as scientific as possible, all before-and-after runs were made on the same dyno no more than 5 minutes apart from one another. We also decided to test both a stock Ninja 1000 and a modified Hayabusa in the order of fairness since one bike might respond differently than the next. We’re not saying that all bikes will react the same as these two, but a lot can be gathered from the results. We rolled the stock Ninja 1000 on the dyno first and made a few pulls with and without an air filter. The big Kawi gained roughly 1 HP from 7500 RPM to the limiter without the air filter in place. Changes in torque were negligible at less than 1 LB-FT. Next up was a modded ’Busa fitted with an M4 full system. Oftentimes uncorking the inlet side of a bike that already has an open exhaust usually nets larger gains than if it had a stock exhaust. Think about inhaling air through a huge pipe and then having to exhale it through a straw-it’s a bottleneck. Considering that, a bike with an open exhaust was a nice alternative to the stock Ninja. After some before and after pulls the ’Busa netted roughly 2 HP from 6800 RPM to the limiter with a torque increase of less than 1 LB-FT. Myth: Confirmed. Plausible. Busted Both bikes did gain minor power without an air filter, but at a huge risk to severe engine damage. Beyond ingesting large road grit, it’s the small debris the human eye can’t easily see that will quickly destroy an engine. Instead of the air filter catching these contaminants they’re free to enter the motor where they will quickly destroy valve seats and even your cylinder bores and rings. Eventually, the motor will begin to leak compression and oil. Although 2 horsepower for free might sound great, it’s really not free when you consider the cost of an inevitable motor rebuild. However, if you’re a racer in search of every last ounce and refresh your motor several times a season, why not? Otherwise, stick with your stock filter or look to a freer flowing (but still protective) aftermarket replacement.

    i agree with most of your points. but for engines that do not come pre run in done, the cylinder is honed in criss-cross pattern which gives friction to the rings to run in and set perfectly. if you check an replacement cylinder the walls will not be smooth but honed to fine roughness. so i think for the first 20 or so kms it would make sense to ride the bike up to 5-6k rpm (for bikes redlining at 10-11 k) and let it decelerate and do this in each gear except 1st. also it is imp to not let the engine overheat. what do you think?

  • @manojs5971

    I agree with you vikas, even I'm doing the same from 2years. A bike can run 10k with full synthetic oil, but if you ride your bike in dusty areas for most of the km then oil's viscosity will change and we need to change that earlier when compared to the bikes riding in comparatively less dusty area. This is my personal experience.

    There are 2 theories on this. (Break it in / Ride it like you always will). I was told that BMW over tightens the valves at the factory so that they seat better. If I followed their break-in instructions, my engine would go 250,000 miles before its first overhaul. My R1200RT was EXTREMELY tight when I first got it. No torque. At 600 miles and then at 3,00 miles and then again at 6,000 miles there were great increases in power and torque each time. At 25,000 miles, the bike is running better than new.

    Shashank Suresh Very nice question mate! I would say, just make sure that the engine is not stressed. You can feel that by the vibrations produced by the engine. be in a gear which you feel is keeping the engine vibrations lower but still is producing enough torque.. Hope you are subscribed to the channel and enjoy my other videos too..You can find me on Facebook too.. Cheers!

  • @PraveenKRKRP
    @PraveenKRKRP9 жыл бұрын

    Exactly!! Run in period is the 'limitation' on engine rpm and not the speed, one has to maintain, i took the delivery of my duke 390 and rode off to my place which is 300 kms away..very same day. I was doing constant 120kmphr(keeping engine rpm under 6.5k). And i was riding in 'different rpm ranges'(never to ride in a fixed rpm for longer duration), thats very crucial aspect for engine seasoning....
