Hades was honestly one of the more chill and reasonable gods. He judged people fairly after they died and he honored most agreements he made. He cares about his duties as a god which is a lot more than can be said for most other gods. He also doesn't throw a tantrum every time he can't get what he wants. Most importantly he doesn't sleep with everyone like "other people". For some reason the media portrays him as a villain but in the actual myths Hades was probably one of the better gods to have an encounter with.

Honestly the only times he fucked with mortals was because they deserved it and needed to be taught a lesson. He just wants to do his job and spend time with his wife, and be left out of whatever shenanigans his brothers were up to.

Just FYI, the Underworld (Hades) is not actually hell, at least not all of it. The Underworld is literally the afterlife; everyone who dies goes to the Underworld. It's once you get there that Hades (the god) judges you to determine where you end up. Really good and heroic people go to Elysium (heaven/paradise) Vast majority of people go to Asphodel (sort of a Limbo), where the souls of the dead just wander around until their time to reincarnate And the most evil and vile of people go to Tartarus; this would be what we'd consider Hell, there's fire and brimstone and damnation and punishments and all that fun stuff.

  • @Anthropomorphic

Periodically, I think it was commonly believed that everyone went to the same place regardless of your moral character, and that the afterlife was kind of bleak and boring. Then there were the folks who believed there wasn't an afterlife at all, which was a relatively common view.

The “living in a cave” statement is referring to Plato’s allegory of the cave which is a conversation that talks about Socrates’ idea about enlightenment which is really hard to explain. It is just better to look up the meaning but the short version is that if a group of people lived most there lives in a cave chained to a wall with only the ability to look ahead and a group of “shadowmakers” standing behind the wall the prisoners were chained to holding up images/figurines that cast shadows for the prisoners to see from a fire behind the shadowmakers. The prisoners would believe that the shadows are real objects but what would happen if a prisoner escaped the cave and entered the real world? How would the prisoner react? This conversation is written by Plato because he was Socrates’ disciple and most of what philosophers know about Socrates is from Plato because Socrates wrote very very little compared to Plato who was like a child who wrote down everything a parent (Socrates) did.
