You know, in hindsight this is pretty predictable, right up until the hypnotic human touch thing. It does seem odd, thinking about it, that a shark's entire respiratory system would be hinging on one point of failure. Human intervention could not perceivably be the only thing that might force a shark to put on the brakes.

Sharks absolutely die if forced to stay still, this happens all the time when they get tangled in fishing nets. It just takes a lot longer than 30 seconds.

i think its the same state they go in when turned on their back. When sharks are turned on their back they go into a passive state wich after a (probbably long) while could kill them.

I'm not sure it applies to all sharks, but some sharks small enough to enter on underwater passages do get a rest on tight caves when they're tired

Sorry, can you not hold your breathe for 30seconds to a minute? The only way to test this is to keep the shark there for long enough for it to die or for a substantial amount of time, i.e. 20-30minutes

Try holding your breath for 30 seconds, did you die? No?!? This is exactly what they made this shark do. So no, it didn’t die, but not because ram ventilation is a myth, but because it takes a lot longer than 30 seconds to suffocate something

As much as I love this show, this video was pretty stupid. Many sharks can indeed breath while standing still in calm waters. But it's not true for the great white shark or the hammerhead, who both lack a buccal pump and therefore need to keep swimming OR to have a strong water courant pass through their gills in order to breath.

That was stupid, and messed up. I normally love Mythbusters, but why do this? If it does kill the animal, then its no better than animal cruelty. If it doesn't, it's unnecessarily dangerous. There are plenty of extant films of sharks reposing in caves, perfectly still.
