As per legend, Guru Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche, meditated in a cave here for three years, three months, three weeks, three days, and three hours in the 8th century. It is believed that Guru Rinpoche flew to this location on the back of a tigress, thus earning the name Tiger's Nest.
There are a total of around 1000 steps that you cover overall when hiking the Tiger's Nest Bhutan. These include steps during the trek. There are also a lot of steps inside the Tiger's Nest Monastery. So, those who won't be entering the Tiger's nest monastery will have to deal with less number of steps overall.
In addition to 5 km trekking, the stiff climbing from the base to the top of the mountain before reaching the 1,000 steps beginning to go down the valley! 😜
Paro Taktsang, also known as the Taktsang Palphug Monastery and the Tiger's Nest, is a sacred Vajrayana Himalayan Buddhist site located on the cliffside of the upper Paro valley in Bhutan. It is one of thirteen Tiger's Nest caves in historical Tibet in which Padmasambhava practiced and taught Vajrayana.
A later monastery complex was built in 1692 by 4th Druk Desi Tenzin Rabgey around the Taktsang Senge Samdup cave, where Guru Padmasambhava meditated and practiced with students including Yeshe Tsogyal before departing the kingdom of Tibet in the early 9th century. Padmasambhava is credited with introducing Vajrayana Buddhism to Bhutan, which was then part of Tibet, and is the tutelary deity of the country. Today, Paro Taktsang is the best known of the thirteen taktsang or "tiger lair" caves in which he and his students meditated.
The shrine dedicated to Padmasambhava, also known as Gu-ru mTshan-brgyad Lhakhang or "the Shrine of the Guru with Eight Names", refers to Padmasambhava's Eight Manifestations and is an elegant structure built around the cave in 1692 by Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye. It has become the cultural icon of Bhutan. A popular festival, known as the Tsechu, held in honor of Padmasambhava, is celebrated in the Paro Valley sometime during March or April.
According to the Namthar of the Lhakhang, it is believed that Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) flew to this location from Singye Dzong on the back of a tigress This place was consecrated to tame the Tiger demon.
An alternative legend holds that a former wife of an emperor willingly became a disciple of Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambahva) in Tibet. She transformed herself into a tigress and carried the Guru on her back from Tibet to the present location of the Taktsang in Bhutan. In one of the caves here, the Guru then performed meditation and emerged in eight incarnated forms (manifestations), and the place became holy. Subsequently, the place came to be known as the “Tiger's Nest”.
The popular legend of the Taktsang monastery is further embellished with the story of Tenzin Rabgye, who built the temple here in 1692. It has been mentioned by authors that the 8th century guru Padmasmabhava had reincarnated again in the form of Tenzin Rabgye. The corroborative proofs mooted are: that Tenzin Rabgye was seen (by his friends) concurrently inside and outside his cave; even a small quantity of food was adequate to feed all visitors; no one was injured during worship (in spite of the approach track to the monastery being dangerous and slippery); and the people of the Paro valley saw in the sky various animal forms and religious symbols including a shower of flowers that appeared and also vanished in the air without touching the earth.
부탄에 가장 유명한 불교성지, 깍아세운듯한 절벽위의 탁상수도원 (호랑이의 둥지라고도 불리는) 트랙킹을 하였습니다. 보통 왕복 6시간이 걸린다고들 하는데, 저는 8시간이나 걸렸는데, 완전 녹초가되서 하산하였답니다.

네팔에서 안나프루나와 에베레스트 베이스캠프를 다녀온 경험도있지만, 고산병으로 많이들 힘들어 한다하여 의사한테 처방받아온 고산병약을 산에 오르기전에 한알먹고 시작했습니다. 다행히도 일기예보와는 틀리게 화창한 날씨여서 가파른 산꼭대기에 오른후 700 개가 넘는 계곡의 계단을 내려가가서 다시 수도원 절벽 계단을 무사이 오를수있었습니다.
탁상수도원에는 9개의 사찰이있는데, 그중 7개의 사찰만 대중들에게 보여주고 2개는 오직 왕이나 국가 특별한 손님들에게만 보여준다네요.

가이드 설명에 의하면 ~~
"탁상사원(tiger’s nest)은 호랑이굴이라고도 부릅니다.
정확히는 탁상팔수도원(taktsang palphug monastery). 해발 3,120미터에 위치한 이곳은 8세기 파드마삼바바가 2번째 왔을 때 이곳 탁상으로 왔다. 훈세에서 처음 설법을 하고 탁상으로 명상을 하기 위해 왔는데, 파드마삼바바가 켄파종(khenpajong)에서 악마호랑이를 물리치고, 호랑이로 변한 제자(예세초곌=파드마삼바바의 부인)의 등에 용맹스런 사람으로 변해 올라타고 이곳으로 왔다하여 호랑이 굴이라는 이름을 얻었다. 파드마삼바바는 이곳에서 3년 3개월 동안 명상을 했고 8대 변화신을 모두 나누어 이곳을 성지로 만들었다. 이후 파드마삼바바는 부탄에서 처음으로 금강승 불교 중 닝마파의 시조가 된다.
탁상 사원에는 그의 이같은 행적을 기리고 있으며 현재 부탄에서 가장 신성한 지역이며 성인과 수행자들이 깨달음을 얻는 곳으로 추앙받고 있다.
파드마삼바바가는 동굴에서 4개월동안 제자들에게 금강승을 비밀스럽게 전해주었는데 이것이 밀교다. 부처님의 가르침을 비밀스럽게 숨겨두었다가 인연이 되는 제자들이 찾을 수 있도록 했는데 대표적인 것이 티베트 사자의서 다. 1692년 4번째 종교지도자 둑데씨텐진랍계(tenzin rabgye)가 파로 축제일을 기점으로 사원을 세웠다. 기본설계를 한뒤 승려이자 예술가였던 펜롭드락파 걋소(1646~1719년)가 공사를 계획했다. 본당 주변에 부속건물들이 있는데 이중에 포부 라캉에는 당시 악마을 무찌르던 금강저가 보존되어 있고, 본당 위에는 우겐 체모 라캉이 있고, 그 위로는 연화생 보살이 천상에 사는 도리천을 의미하는 장포펠리 라캉이 있다.
1951년 화재로 일부가 손상되었는데, 1998년 대화재로 본당이 소실되었다. 2000년에 복원공사를 해서 현재의 모습을 갖추었다. 곰파인 이사원은 1998년 화재가 났는데 다행이도 외부만 피해를 입었다."
