UPDATE: The deformed turtle, Quasimodo (that's his name), was recently confirmed to be alive and growing, although not really growing bigger. This was confirmed by Emily and Ed themselves in the past livestream. EDIT: Emily and Ed confirmed on a livestream around a year ago that Quasimodo has unfortunately passed away.

It's not necessarily because of the tail, but the tail is a symptom of an abnormal development. We have no way of knowing what else went wrong with the poor dude.

​@@atla8438 When they were saying "ohhhh, he's the hook-tail baby!" I don't think they were saying that's why he died, I think they were referring back to the first video. When they started this video, they thought he was a newly hatched turtle, and had come out of one of the eggs in that bin. But then when they saw the tail, they remembered he was one of the turtles who had hatched in the first bin in the first video. They'd moved him to the second bin because he hadn't absorbed all of his yolk yet, and they wanted that to happen before they released him into the wild. I think they were surprised that he died though - I think they were expecting Quasimodo to die, and for the hook tail baby to survive. The hook tail baby could have died from many things, completely unrelated to his tail. But also, if you think about it, a deformed tail on a turtle is a deformity of their spine. It's possible he also had another spinal deformity that was fatal.

If the deformed baby makes it, do you think you would keep them since Ed loves them? If so they might be good to use in education programs about pollution and stuff 🤔

Yes! I was thinking this a well. Random but there are a few case of children being born with serious facial abnormalities and theirs being fully functional but underneath skin. And surgens can uncover there eyes and give them sight.

I'm so surprised that one that was moving in the shell never hatched. I guess it had an underdeveloped egg tooth? Glad some of them made it though!

Or it could have died in-shell. That happens with some of their snake hatching videos--the babies develop but don't make it to term. Honestly, I was kind of surprised, too. Maybe it hatched but they forgot to mention it?

You should keep the deformed one for education! It wouldn’t survive in the wild sadly, so I feel like that would be the best option.

Save the deformed tutle

I'm surprised that one big egg with the veins and moving turtle inside it never hatched! Did it just stop responding after awhile, or maybe a bad egg tooth?

And that's what you should tell the children......that they are heroes because their quick thinking and good sense allowed at least SOME of the babies to be saved and now they are hatched and living back in the wild. THEY were part of that. And they should be proud of themselves for having compassion for these little turtles and helping them.. And that little turtle Ed fells in love with is ADORABLE.

The deformed one, if it survives, could be used as an educational animal as to the consequences of ruining habitats and messing with animals as eggs.

I feel so satisfied by Ed taking a fancy to the little deformed baby. This is overall so 😎. I’m now invested into the little one. I really hope he/she makes it.

It’s kind of amazing how Emily and Ed have become the eyeless animal heroes of the reptile world. It’s pretty amazing that they’ve been able to help so many animals who have such a major disability. 💚

I didn't expect the deformed baby to make it. It looks like it's doing well, all things considered. I'm suprised it's moving around so well. Too bad more didn't make it, I really expected the club tailed baby to survive, especially compared to the really badly deformed one it looked like it was okay. But I guess that's hard to tell from just watching the video. I'm glad at least some made it, and I hope the blind baby will be fine :)

I thought the same thing about club tailed baby. Never thought for a second the deformed baby would've outlived it, much less still be alive.

Now I'm curious, is there a way to know if the little Quasimodo turtle is still doing okay? I see a comment from 11 months ago, which tells me he was still alive as of March of last year. I've never seen him come up in any of the videos since, but I'll admit I don't always keep a close eye on streams or social media posts. Would love to know if the little guy is still going strong!

Well done by everyone involved in saving those turtles! Those young girls should be commended for stepping up and doing the right thing. Also a special shout out to Ed for not giving up on the little special needs snapper! We have a Crested Gecko who had a spinal issue when we bought him at the reptile store. He is over a year old now and going strong. He can now use his rear legs and climb to the top of 24" tall enclosure. You just never know!

It's really about quality of life which is so important and definitely a very hard decision to make.

There’s something about baby snapping turtles that melts my heart. We found one the size of a quarter half frozen in our driveway and kept him/her for years as kids. That turtle was so spoiled. Franklin was his or her name and he ate hotdogs and everything. So honestly seeing how you guys are taking care of the special needs snapping turtle makes me so nostalgic and happy. As a lot of people are saying, I’m glad you kept the deformed lil guy! He’d be great for your programs or even zoo to teach little kids that disabled animals deserve love and care/support too. I’d love to go to a program/watch a show about how to look after disabled animals. Too many are sitting waiting for adoption or just being put down/dying because people don’t care for them. Can’t wait to see what it’s name will be if it survives even longer! Nearly Headless Nick clearly wanted to send you guys some love during these weird times

Ed sounds like such the proud parent. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the little guy. I always root for the underdog

I wonder if the deformed turtle is one that one of the kids threw or damaged in some way

omg i teared up when u said Edd fell in luv w/ the deformed lil dude...... he is so cute!!!

The deformity is probably from being thrown around. If it was genetic i would think there would be more with issues 🤔

So glad you kept the differently abled snapper. It is such special little thing. It’s so great that you gave it a chance at life.

It's so amazing how nature works. Thank you for these videos on the rescued baby turtle eggs. Different types of turtles, some made it, some didn't... and one little deformed one captured thousands of hearts. Watching his efforts to survive, and y'alls help for him to accomplish life. Y'all are the best 💯💓 thank you. 😊💞🐢❤😻🙏🌻🦋🌞

What ended up happening to the deformed snapping turtle?

I dub him, Lil' Eddie. Grow strong and live well, Lil' Eddie, for however long that may be.

Ed falling in love with the deformed baby and wanting to keep it is me.

Thank you for showing us the reality of how animals reproduce in nature and how that’s connected to the food web. So many people “love nature” but they don’t understand the difference between real life and an animated movie for children. The cruelty of nature isn’t better than the kindness of civility, but kindness takes effort and understanding. Understanding requires experiencing the good and the bad of hatches like this.

Can we all talk about Emila's belt having the Captain America shield- Also, it's good that at least some of the babies made it!!

Could his eyes be underneath his fused eyelids? Just a thought

incredibly unlikely & even if they were they'd be underdeveloped or deformed so he'd still be blind

Yes and no? Like someone else said, probably underdeveloped. Maybe he senses some light differences at best?

It’s possible,regardless of the deformed eyes he might be able to see lights and shadows ,maybe more...no way to check without extreme risk though

We have to name him!!! He is the little turtle that could. He deserves a name!

Thats sad that some didnt survive, but at least you saved most of the eggs! Great job incubating them, and I hope the little special needs snapper makes it!

For that backstory, a lot of healthy babies hatched! Very good job! I hope, the deformed one will grow up. Sometimes, some babies look like there's a 0%chance that it's gonna make it but with a lot of extra care&time, they can do it.

I'd have voted for culling, but I'm thrilled that Ed is going to give this turtle the best care possible. Go Ed! Good luck little turtle. You got this.
