I am stuck with a problem for part 2 and just can't get it to run code from a floppy and locks up. It works perfectly with the XT-IDE and will run wolf just fine. Someone suggested to look at DMA and perhaps try a soundblaster with DMA,

Nice video Lee! Looking forward to part 2, quite jealous would like a 286 machine to complement my 8088 one, one day... Good luck with the Floppy issues you have at the moment, I guess the chipset handles DMA so maybe check the DMA lines and settings. Could also be BIOS config, floppy geometry etc... My only criticism was the lack of Lee Smith TM "WOWs" once the computer booted 😋 Great result tho, well done!

Yes I have to agree the first post screen part lacked enthusiasm haha WOW. Perhaps I can make up for it when I get the FDD working. my research did say the DMA is part of the three headland chips so not a part I can swap over just for testing.

I had 3 full days of video files to go through, but a lot was not worth showing. This covers everything that I did without repeating many parts over and over.

I guess things like this are not that known, because the 286 et al were so generic back in the day (therefore I didn't find them interesting then either :) ). That was mainly due to the 8- and 16-bit discrete systems that were.

I did find a lot of boards with this chipset, but they are all OEM, This just has MG on the board and not much else.

I have an Opus 286 (12 MHz), it's got everything on the mainboard but the video card. MFM HDD controller too. The battery is mounted not near the edge, but somewhat closer to the middle of the board. And it was sitting in a puddle of leakage, all the components in a 10cm radius have green legs and the traces look wasted but... the board still works just fine. I did remove the battery (like... a year ago, I shoulda removed it when I got it) but I'm reluctant on neutralizing the leakage because I fear that reaction will be the final nail in the coffin (stuff fizzles and moves while neutralizing).

I was very lucky with this because it didn't have too many traces next to the battery. If you're not sure about the repair just do the cleanup anyway to stop it continuing to eat away and eventually have nothing left.
