    @@trashboat5388 Seeing how a very large amount of the seeds sent are either native to north america or commonly grown here, that's a pretty terrible theory. I figure they chose seeds because they're extremely cheap, and something someone would feasibly buy. Grass seeds cost next to nothing and garden shops tend to have them in barrels with giant scoops, so I guess those seeds might have been the cheapest thing they could ship that feel lumpy enough in envelopes to fool customs into thinking it's jewelry.

    this happened to me on ebay some 10 years ago. I sold an item, ($400) guy paid, tracking sent etc. the day the package arrived the buyer filed a claim against me. I offered the buyer a return and that same day he put the return tracking information into the eBay dispute and received his refund. 3 days later I received a package of carefully weighed out grass seeds. I immediately contacted eBay and they said because the return tracking had the same shipping weight that was their proof that I received the item back. so not only was I out the $400 item but I was also out the $400. I believe eBay has changed these rules now.

    Thank you for posting a coherent explanation. It's 'brushing' or Review Fraud, it's not new, and it's why hundreds of reviews are created for that coveted feedback. Also that USPS confirmation helps to show a review from the US on many sites, which helps the review look better. But that doesn't help make the news, soo.... death seeds! Seeds are honestly probably the cheapest item they can buy in bulk and send for the cheapest. ePacket FTW.

    Hey wait I've had those seeds arrive in Perth, Western Australia! And it's a real WTF moment, as I'm super into plants and gardening. I was really worried about biosecurity and possible diseases/ parasites entering Australia (which has pretty strict quarantine.) I'm almost certain mine were a type of brassica - radish/ beetroot or something else similar. I didn't try opening the package, but was super hard to get quarantine/ department of agriculture to take notice and dispose safely. I've never used Wish, but brought Chinese products from eBay. In my city I can't even buy seeds from other states in Australia, any plant material is heavily regulated under quarantine/biosecurity laws. I was kinda freaked out.

    We (my wife and kids) ordered seeds online through Amazon....they also, in separate orders (but around the same time), ordered other items. All of the items purchased came from China, it turned out. The seeds came with a couple extra unmarked or labeled clear packages of seeds....ones that were not ordered. We had ordered these around the time this story was a story, so we didn't think anything of it. We thought it was free merch from the Amazon seller, as sometimes happens. ....the next two items came separately, were also from China, were not seed or plant related (toys and clothing) .....and each package contained a clear package of seeds. we planted them in a pot (because we understand local laws and invasive species and the dangers there of) and....one was some type of herb type plant. .....had it been Morning Glory, I (FOR SURE) wouldn't have planted them, then taken the seeds from those new plants and made them into LSA......I mean, that's really why you're askin, right?

    Maybe it's seeds because seeds are actually something people might buy at any weight and so would raise less flags. Take the bracelet for example, no one would buy a few ounces of something cheaper like sand, but they might buy that weight of seeds. Customs x-rays all packages and where an xray of a ridiculously small amount of sand might be suspicious all on its own, a bit of seeds would require also reading the label and not assuming its just mislabeled to raise any alarm.

  • @WeirdExplorer
    @WeirdExplorer Жыл бұрын

    I think I can solve this. Its pretty much what you guessed but with one big exception. Its not seeds being used for the weight of another item, its the other way around. I would guess that they ARE online seed companies based in China. They are listing the item as bracelets and whatnot because sending seeds in the mail from another country is illegal without a proper phytosanitary certificate. I've sent seeds legally from another country before. Its a huge headache, costs more money and takes much longer to arrive. Even then the seeds will possibly go bad or get destroyed when they hit customs. I sent seeds to myself from India once (again completely legally with the proper certificates) when they arrived they were moldy. To get around this problem, seed sellers will often just list it as something else. Why go through the trouble? Well seeds are a big business especially for rare plants. Its not uncommon to see seeds for sale costing hundreds of dollars. And with big money means a LOT of scams and its not very well regulated. One common scam is where unscrupulous seed sellers will list plants that are rare (or don't actually exist in nature with photoshopped images) and then if you order it, they will just send you some random seeds probably dead ones that won't germinate. They will at least rack up a star rating of some kind for actually delivering something and by the time the seeds grow into something that isn't the thing you ordered (if they grow at all) its already been months or years.

    I like your theory. As for, why seeds? If I were to add to your theory about padding reviews, if customs somehow discovers the true contents of the package, the seller can just claim they had a mix-up, since seeds are at least valuable enough to actually post in the mail. If they send something truly worthless like sand or rocks, this plausible deniability would be more difficult. But that's just a theory.

    I'm concerned that these may be kill seeds (I'm pretty sure that's what they're called). Basically, cross pollination between these seeds and other plants will create a bunch of infertile plants. This would stop us from growing more crops or other important plants, and we'd starve. I might be wrong there, but it's still not worth the risk. Don't plant them, and don't let anyone else plant them. Stock up on food and maybe grow plants indoors if you can.

After a lot of frustration with PayPal and the BBB, we were able to get a full refund and got what we paid for through an actual reliable resource. However, it still left us scratching our heads with what was going on since this was going on just as the seed thing was booming. It's a given that we knew we got scammed, but why it's been seeds or something random like what we got was the weird thing since it clearly wasn't what we paid for given the size and weight alone. Thanks for covering this since I didn't know brushing scams were a thing.

    Yeah, win-win. Expect for the facts that you have no idea what the seeds are nor what's living on the seeds that could easily overtake and/or kill off your garden and more than likely escape out into rest of your local (and eventually not-so-local) ecosystem and that your data of (at the very least) your name and mailing address (and almost certainly more critical things like credit card numbers etc.) are available to anyone willing to shell out nothing more than pennies. Win-win indeed.

    My data (personally) has always been available lol. I have horrendous credit, and I'm quite impoverished. Now, as for the mystery flora invading the local ecosystem, that wouldn't really happen. Generally, people put plants into pots, not a garden. I can see people just throwing the seeds into the dirt in their backyard, but that kind of negligent behavior usually will mean near certain death for any plant, due to the owner not knowing how to care for it properly. I do understand your concerns, I just meant that people in my particular situation don't necessarily need to worry.

A dog brushing up against it, should the seeds or seep pods cling at all, and then going outside to poop is all it would take. I received 2 packets of mystery seed from China.I've ordered lots of seeds from China and they ALWAYS come shipped labeled beads or some other small trinket so that's NO mystery.As a lifelong gardener I recognize seeds well.I planted one packet of morning glory.They are just plain jane, run of the mill morning glory.I love the fancy,expensive ones so no big whoop.The other seeds I recognized as some type of squash or pumpkin (one of the smaller type).I LOVE this variety and will plant it again.I am saving seeds from it.It's a fantastic type of zuccini.I don't normally care much for zukes and don't waste space on them so was disappointed when it turned out to be zukes.However. these plants have produced all summer and continue to produce long after other varieties succumb to mildews and squash bugs.They produce fruit that doesn't get tough or bitter no matter how large they get.Now before someone considers these traits nefarious ,I'd like to remind people that China and Japan have a long history of being masterful gardeners and I tend to prefer varieties from those regions.After trying several types of varieties of various plants I find them superior for disease resistance ,productivity, and taste.I will only plant Cukes from Japan and the Japanese Blaack Truffle tomato is the finest in the world.I like it better than Cherokee Purple.No mystery here really...at least nothing sinister.
