While I was proud of this video at the time the research I did in this video is poor and the conclusions I make in some of these case are way over simplified. Here are some of the big things I ended up getting wrong or misrepresenting Shergar: The black and white "polaroid" that I claimed could've been his dead body is highly disputed some say it is a real polaroid others claim that it was a picture used on the set of the 1999 movie Shergar. Their are likely other details that I missed to but that was the most glaring for me Phar Lap: For flat out inacurasies I mention he raced in New Zealand when in actuality he was only born there and raced entirely in Australia except for his final start in Mexico. I did not even scratch the surface of all that had happened to Phar Lap I was in way too much of a rush thus did not give the horse the time and effort he really deserved. Their are many stories and theories that I just flat out never talked about that deserved a mention such as possibly colicing from consuming wet grass. Or crazier stories about a person only known as the "brazillian" murdering the horse. Their is a lot and I failed to be as detailed as I should've Alydar: This is my most egregious and inaccurate of the horses I covered. I was overly dismissive of the foul play involved with Alydar. I glossed over the financial reasons that Lundy may have wanted Alydar dead. I also just flat out did not include many other damming and suspicious occurrences involving Alydar such as the night watchman being told to take the day off the night Alydar broke his leg. Their are many others mentioned in great detail in books such as Broken written by Fred Kray which tell Alydars story better then I could. So the fact I used minimal evidence despite the many resources available on my end for this video is very bad and a poor attempt at video journalism made worse by the serious subject matter being discussed in this video and for that i'm truly sorry.
That photo of shegar is absolutely chilling 😨 hopefully one day his mystery is solved
That polaroid of Shergar will gladly haunt my dreams.... Great work on making this video so detailed!
The way they treat horses is no better than what they are on the inside, cold hearted and cruel people that don't think of them as animals that have feelings and emotions, they are just a commodity to them, and that's all!
About the Alydar death, there is a new book called, "Broken: the Suspicious Death of Alydar and the End of the last Golden Age of Racing" by Fred Kray that I highly recommend to you and your followers here. Mr. Kray is an animal lawyer who interviewed many of the people involved in the story of Alydar's last days on earth. He interviewed Tom Dixon, the insurance adjuster, just about all the grooms Alydar had, Dr. Larry Bramlage, who did the operation, Alton Stone, and many more. Great book. Here is something that Alydar's grooms said , concerning that door and Alydar's temperment. J.T. Lundy started that BS about "Alydar kicking the door and injuring himself." After all, the horse was insured for a total of 41.5 million. Giant Eagle Insurance insured him for 5 million (Calumet was behind on payments) Lloyd's of London insured Alydar for 36.5 million. Lundy, who had no business running a farm like Calumet, had to convince the adjuster it was an accident. The farm was over 118 million in debt which no one in the Bluegrass knew. Anyway, ALL of the grooms Mr. Kray, the author of "Broken", interviewed said that Alydar NEVER kicked that door with his HIND LEGS. That photo of the door you have are all FRONT LEG kicks. The photo is in the book. Could Alydar have been tough like many stallions? Yes, but the grooms said he was never nasty or mean. The consensus I got was from the grooms was that he was a wonderful horse to work with. The book does confirm that he didn't get a lot of chances to go outside. Dr. Larry Bramlage, who never treated Alydar or saw the horse as a regular patient, before he did the surgery on the horse on Nov 14, was the one who came up with the crazy story about Alydar having a nasty temper, which the horse's own grooms did not agree with. Anyway, this book , "Broken...." is awesome. Ever since that story about the show horses came out in Sports Illustrated and then I saw that sidebar story about Alydar, I had started to suspect Alydar was murdered. Alydar's my all time favorite racehorse. I definitely think he was murdered for the insurance.
I really appreciate how thorough your videos are and how they address the darker side of horse racing. I subbed ❤

Thank you very much this was a real passion project of mine and I want to do something like it again after the Kentucky Derby concludes stay tuned!
Shergar's story always scares me. I know its probably impossible but i really hope its solved
As far as Arrogate is concerned the answer is he was by Unbridled's Song, and that sire's off-spring are notorious for being unsound and having all kinds of health issues resulting in shortened racing careers. No one thinks there's any mystery surrounding Arrogate's death. I have no idea what that vet was talking about saying his injury was a 20 million to 1 shot. That's plain idiotic.

How many horses, Unbridled Songs included, manage to fatally, but covertly, damage their spinal cords playing in the paddock? Weird injury, IMO.

@@marysueeasteregg Well considering Arrogate's g-g-g grandsire was Raise A Native and he (Arrogate) was inbred on Raise A Native at least 3-4 times and Raise A Native was euthanized at 27 due to spinal deterioration, I'd say its a good bet that is where it came from. Spinal problems can be genetic and can happen just like that. I have two Dachshunds (a breed prone to spinal issues) both of them have spinal problems, both seemed very healthy until one day boom it happened. One went down in his back twice first time he recovered without surgery, second time he seemed fine when they went out to potty running around being himself, we laid down for a nap before I had to get ready for work and boom he woke up paralyzed in his rear end and needed surgery (he recovered), the other went down once but recovered without surgery and has not had another instance as of yet.

It was probably a rare and unlikely injury, but given some of the horse's tendencies and the lack of a competing explanation, the most likely. As Sherlock Holmes said: "Once you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however unlikely, must be the solution".
Amazing video! Definitely should do more about the darker side of racing. Just because we love the sport, doesn't make it right to ignore the consequences. Maybe do something related to drug violations.
Best video you've made yet. Great job man. I was aware of pretty much all the deaths but man the detail and research you have put into this vid is admirable. Keep up the good work. As this is a sad video I think its expected for people to have mixed opinions about it. But I think its important to shine the light on the dark side of racing In hopes to improve the sport. One of the best horse racing bids I've seen. Great job

Thanks a lot man it's great to know that i'm able to top myself in the eyes of my fans. It was definitely a long undertaking gathering all the facts and especially writing the script for this behemoth but comments like these make sure that i'll do it again for the next big vid. The dark subject matter is certainly something I don't do a lot on this channel because as a racing fan I usually love to show off the best in racing but every once and a while you gotta be honest and say it ain't a perfect sport. I feel as though the most passionate of horse racing fans are the ones who don't just love the sport but want to make it better and sometimes it's acknowledging the mistakes of racings past. And again thanks a million for the comment.

@@SketchyTheHorseGuy No problem keep up the good work
Do you think if they made an age rule (horses can only race if 6 years and older) that would prevent a lot of the legs snapping? There bones aren’t even fused plus density won’t reach full potential until 5-6 years old.

They really should reform the whole sport, but I can't imagine them doing it. They race babies, retire them, and breed them, still babies.

It’s so far corrupt, they’ll never make changes that drastic. Don’t forget this video covers just a fraction of the others that died on the track, in their paddocks/stalls, and mysteriously.

That actually would make breakdowns worse. Breakdowns are more likely in racehorses who started their racing careers later in their lives. Horses who raced at 2 for example while definitely need to be run with care when done right are sounder and better fit for horse racing. Because their body grows and develops to be used to the stresses of racing. If you took a fully formed 5-year-old and just started racing them it would be a harder adjustment on their body to become a racehorse. While their are improper ways to train younger horses that lead to long term problems in their lives if done right racing a horse younger is better for them long term.
Second of your videos I've seen. I have to say: I am incredibly impressed by the thoroughness, analysis and overall temperament of these videos. No wild speculations, just good information, well presented. I enjoyed the "overrated: video. Raised many questions, and would promote good discussions. We need more of that. And more of your videos.
Great video, keep them coming 👍
Good stuff Sketchy!
I'm very sad when i watch this video 😢😢 i love horse , i hope this is not happen to Rich Strike's, i love Rich Strike's he is amazing horse ..🙏🏻🙏🏻🤲

How about the death of Swale?

Swale had a heart attack.
Excellent is a short word for this video.
Excellent video idea!👍😁
Kinda curious as to why Medina Spirit is in this video, yet no mention of Swale. Their cases are very similar, and still can't be sure of the cause in either of their deaths.

Simply put it’s because I actually completely forgot about Swale. That would’ve been perfect for this video. Maybe if I can get another 5 mysterious horses I could someday make a second installment that includes him.

I forget that I have been watching races since I was a child in the 60's, and have a lot of history to draw on. I do love your videos, well thought out, and generally very positive, tho I might argue with some of your conclusions!

They eventually caught those who were responsible for killing Alydar. There was a book written about it. They took a crowbar and hit his back leg with it and broke it. The night watchman said there were great big tears rolling down Alydars face when he found him, holding his leg up. The farm had sold all of the shares for Alydar for years in Advance and he was therefore worthless to them alive. The only thing that they could still collect money on was Alydars insurance policy. If anyone on this earth deserves to burn in hell, it is these fine gentlemen. And someday they will.
There was no mention of Alydar in this video. Very disappointing!
He had a broken leg and was shot no vet as he pulled out
Everyone calling their horse big red.
Both Shegar and Alydar were murdered, Phar Lap was poisoned by Fowler's Solution
0:24 I know nobody is gonna talk about the intro but me purple pushed off the other guy he should’ve been disqualified from the race
Alydar. No that was deamer up in that slying.
Baffert is a monster as far as im concerned
There was but one and will never be another super horse. That of course is Secretariat.
Don't forget Scat Daddy being led from his paddock and falling over and dies
Shergar was kipnap once
They Forgot about SWALE... what really happened to him
the best to ever race
Why’s he keep saying ‘Shergar’ like that?!

You might want to do some research on Alydar’s death. I suggest you read Broken and get your facts straight.
This is fantasy for the uninitiated
Get your facts on Alydar straight. Read Broken. Very disappointed in your take of things.
