Myocarditis
One cardiac condition that has gained a lot of prominence especially during the COVID-19 pandemic is Myocarditis and I have lot of patients who come to see me with symptoms of palpitations, breathlessness and exercise intolerance after catching COVID-19 who are worried that they may have developed Myocarditis.
In this video, I will discuss Acute Myocarditis.
Myocarditis basically means inflammation of the myocardium.
The myocardium is the middle and therefore the most important layer of the heart (it lies between the epicardium and endocardium) which contains all the cardiac muscle cells which are responsible for the conduction of electricity of the heart and also regulate the contraction and relaxation of the heart.
If the myocardium is inflamed and damaged then it can lead to problems with electrical conduction and therefore lead to heart rhythm disorders and it can also lead to ineffective contraction and relaxation of the heart which is termed heart failure.
So the problem with myocarditis is that depending on the severity and extent of inflammation, the patient is prone to dysrhythmias (heart rhythm disturbances) and heart failure - both of which can be life-threatening.
How common is it?
Data from all NHS admissions from 1998-2017 suggest that there were about 13000 hospital admissions with a primary diagnosis of Myocarditis over a 19 year period although this is likely to be a gross underestimate because a significant proportion of patients may with the condition may have not had symptoms to the extent that they presented to hospital and it is not uncommon for diagnoses like ‘myocarditis’ to be missed at the time of admission. I am very confident that we have had a lot more admissions with myocarditis during the COVID pandemic partially because of the virus itself but also because of increased awareness of myocarditis amongst patients and healthcare professionals as a consequence of it being found to be a dangerous consequence of COVID infection.
If we look at these patients who were admitted, 2/3rds were men and compared to women, the median age of these men was about 33 years and the median age of women was about 46 years.

As a heart patient I was since 2017 actively searching for other young people with the same problem. I had to search the whole world to find anyone. It was very rare. After the vaccine was introduced I know 3 people diagnosed myocarditis within 9 days after the vaccine. Another two developed arrhythmias and had to get an ICD and a pacemaker. Another one died after the vaccine because his heart valves got inflamed and they had to be replaced. I was 3 years symptom free and after the vaccine my ICD recorded arrhythmias between 1 and 3 weeks after the vaccine. This was the first time after my cardiac arrest I felt I am about to die again. I belive most people didn't notice that they had an myocarditis. I just noticed it because I'm very sensitive on this now and then I have the ICD who clearly proved my ventricular tachycardia. All these cases I personally know and happend within 9 days of the vaccine.

Thank you Dr. Gupta. This is exactly what I went through after my 2nd dose of covid vaccine and I experienced weird palpitations/sensations in my heart (very different from my regular SVT palpitations) on the 2nd, 3rd and 4rth day after the vaccine. My abnormal ECGs starting since a week after my vaccination and many after show infarct. But I now understand what it could mean. When I speak to the physicians here, they simply say maybe I had a heartache without researching any new findings from covid vaccine fallouts. I had completed a barrage of tests you suggest in your videos (like BNP, 2D echo, nuclear test) and am ok with whatever outcomes lie in my future. I almost forgot about pvcs until I got covid again in 23, and it's was Bigeminy pvcs 24/7 all over again for months. The beta blocker didnt even seem to touch it. 6 months has passed since I had covid last. I am finally getting a normal rhythm on my Fitbit, which is a blessing if you ever had Bigeminy. I am a major endurance athlete, a cyclist and I couldn't ride for about 2 months. Why did I get this when I have only heard about young people?
Dr. Gupta, I have a question. After having COVID. I developed fluttering like palpitations and moments where my heart wpuld randomly elevate to 110-120bpm. Quite severe, scary. I have had the beat-beat-beat-pause.... THUMP.... beat-beat palpitations before. But these new ones felt like flutters. I caught them on my smart watch, they looked like multiple ectopics in a row. This went on 3 months after COVID. So, I went to the hospital, they did multiple checks and found nothing. The doctor at the hospital told me everything was normal and that many people had been coming in with the same symptoms. He told me these heart symptoms are common after viral infections and that they're harmless. My question is: if they found nothing but my heart was clearly playing up, what was the cause? How would a virus cause this if no damage has been done to the heart? I should also say my COVID infection was very mild. Symptoms were at their worst for just 12 hours and that was mainly a headache and bodyaches.
Great discussion. Did you visit to Calgary Canada????

It is a loaded lecture. Kindly tell us how to avoid myocarditis, if it is possible at all.
It's myocarditis. It always is myocarditis with covid. Difference is in the severity. Usually heals uo with little damage, but there is always some damage and there is nearly always palpitations. Cts and MRIs come back clear because myocarditis (the acute variant, the one that follows a viral infection) is one of those illnesses that you only can diagnose for a few days, until it "resolves" (the remaining symptoms are caused by the damage already done to the myocardium, the heart muscle, and sadly that organ can't repair itself like liver or to sone degree kidneys). Some very unlucky ones will have late gadollinium enhancement on an MRI, that is fibrosis in the heart muscle, and then acute myo becomes chronic cardiomyopathy/and/or heart failure, and then it becomes very obvious, but it's a very-very small minority that develops this. Most of us will just have a mildly weakened heart for a few years but otherwise good test results, maybe a bit lover left ventricular ejection fraction than normal. Otherwise it is very much survivable, just have to watch out for not exerting yourself for a few years, and somehow get used to the palpitations and extrasystole because i doubt those are ever going away. And it's imperative avoiding the flu and covid (the two most common viral infections that cause myocarditis) like the plague for the rest of our lives, because if your heart became inflamed during a viral infection, it sure as shit will became again next time, and sadly, consequent myos "add up". Theres my two cents.
Yea but why did the spike in myocarditis occur a year after the beginning of COVID right after the introduction of the vax?

Hi Dr Gupta, would u pls talk about heart problems due to prolonged iron deficiency? Thank you

Interesting thought. Also excessive iron can severely damage the heart. I hope that he will talk about this.
So then, what in the world is the best way to avoid inflammation of the inner heart layer? Inflammation seems like a pretty frequent word and looks like I usually leave just knowing it suddenly showed up.
Didn’t know this was even a thing before 2019, can’t quite wrap my head around what’s changed!? 🥴

Very useful! My myocarditis causes sustained and nsvt. Currently on sotalol (160 2x) and saying no to 2nd ablation. I'm feeling pretty good! Thanks doctor!

My 5th ablation was the charm. They used a special high-resolution catheter on the last one and was able to identify the offending nerves. They say it's due to scarring inside the heart. Stray electric signals go down these scars and cause misfires. An ablation burns those pathways but they can come back.

@GizmoFromPizmo Someday I will reconsider. Right after my 1st ablation my dad died and I think it ruined the healing process. I'm so glad it worked for you!

@@sarahfolger5232 - It worked eventually. I still get palpitations and so I can't say it was a 100% effective therapy.
Here's a weird question - I had afib w/ resting HR above 100, ablation, ablation reversed itself, cardioversion, 1 good year at about 70 bpm, covid booster + caffeine went into atrial flutter for about 1 year at resting about 100 bpm WITH beta blocker, cardioversion reset resting HR into the 50s, goes into the low 40s while sleeping. Cardiologists want me to stay on the low dose beta blocker. Steady for 3 months now. Also have moderate mitral regurg and mild pericardial effusion which I may have had before the ablation. Should I be concerned with the bradycardia? They're telling me no. I'm NOT fit.
hello, is it normal during the exercise for the blood pressure and pulse to drop suddenly? I experienced this today and stopped immediately because I thought I was having a heart attack. I felt pain in my left arm which gradually got worse and I think I also had a burning sensation in my chest but I'm not sure because I panicked. I immediately took my blood pressure and I had 126 to 67 and 95 pulses, normally I should have had about 135 pulses because I had already done 25 minutes of training. all this lasted about 3 to four minutes and then I felt better.has anyone experienced this? last month i had a heart triplex and the doctor said it's fine. i haven't got sick from covid and i haven't been vaccinated for covid
Is subclinical myocarditis something to worry about? Can it become acute? Even if the patient recovers from myocarditis, is it a permanent damage to the heart that we should worry about?
Hi Dr Gupta, I have diabetes , eczema, allergies and low thyroid before COVID. I was a very fit late 60 y old. In 2019 I had some lightheadedness, so asked GP he heart checked me said he thought he heard something and I was sent for an echo. The report said very mild valve issue, no LVH. During 2021 I had a reaction to a diabetic drug that left me with serious gut issues over a year( another earlier drug caused Thrush which took 8 years to get rid of), so I did have infections. Come April 2022, I had my 3 rd vax( first two Astro Zenica, tolerated ok I think), the 3 rd was Pfizer which I reacted to at the time, dead arm , ache in shoulder and neck. One month later first asthma attack, then dermatitis, psoriasis, by August a weird heart event. It felt like someone pulled a plug on my heart, instantly hot and sweaty, light headed. I went and sat down , waited 30 mins and took my pulse and BP. Both were high , my pulse was 157, BP very high too. Dr did ecg and said no heart attack but I was an anomaly due to both being raised. I later found out it was a symptom of Pots. I started having vertical drop falls, pains all over my left leg and when the heart worked on stairs I got lightening bolts down my back and constantly in my leg. It took till Xmas to get referred and till Feb before seeing anyone. Sent for another ECG,then echo, which showed slight enlargement and thickening of the LV. A monitor showed SVTs, flutter, and ectopics. I was sent for a myocardial profusion test, still waiting results 13 weeks later. This process upto now has taken 15 months. Realising my BP was high I put myself on Hawthorn, I was told I was having some angina attacks. My blood sugar doubled, and I had 10 falls across a 3 month period, brain fog, extreme fatigue. Then I started improving. Still can’t do stairs and despite supplements do get fluid in lower legs( take Water balance to help, mainly dandelion). I am waiting for my results but want to make an appointment for advice at least. I believe I have Myocarditis, and it is like someone above has a checklist ticking off what new auto immune illness to give me, latest being painful TMJ, with some hearing loss. I need to tests to keep costs down but want to work as naturally as possible. Both parents had circulatory issues Mum strokes, Dad heart attacks. I know which way I prefer to go. The stuff you do is brilliant and watching you with your dog , I felt sure that you are the one. I live in Bolton. Look out for my zoom appointment as soon as I can get those results. I will buy them all so it is a clear picture. Hopefully speak soon. 💕
Was diagnosed w mild case myocarditus last week. Went to ER tons tests follow up cardiologist 2 weeks. I.do have a root canal.scheduled in january. Should i go through w.it.or hold off? It is lil stressful not sure if good idea or should i wait.
Is it good that my aetrial fibrillation is in controlled results from ecg treatment!give me advice!
The average age of myocarditis (male) of 33 during the last 2-3 years. How does that compare with myocarditis age average pre-covid?
Dr. Gupta, thank you for your great information. Your videos on A-fib were very helpful to me a couple years ago when I had a new diagnosis of paroxysmal a-fib. Question for you. Do you think it's possible that high visceral fat (more specifically, pericardial fat) may be a significant contributor to the development of a-fib? I understand that visceral fat is highly inflammatory, and when a person has visceral fat they also may have some around the heart. Maybe the adipokines from unhealthy pericardial fat eventually interfere with electrical conduction?
Dr. Any feedback on below cabgx3 at the age of 30 in 2017 Eco finding normal overall LV systolic function ( LVEF 55% and mildly reduced gls -15.6% ) with small discrete LV aplical resting regional wall motion abnormality Still have chest pains with elevated troponin with no coronary obstructive disease
Many thanks for your caring & hard work Doctor Gupta 🤲 I was hoping if it’s not too much trouble can you please do a video on … Aorta thickened trieflet valve Mitral valve Regurgitation Enlarged heart Is this serious ? Can you pls explain ☺️ Also on Omeprazole 40mg a day for gastric issues 🤔 Many thanks , very much appreciated & respected , Blessings always 💜 Looking forward to your replay 🙌 🤗

I would like to know what is consider as a weak heart..i was diagnosed with myocarditis with inflammed heart of around 6 n heart working at 20%.
I know this has nothing to do with the video but I was wondering why is it when I get freighted really quick my heart slows down extremely fast almost feels like it stops for a sec and skips then rapidly speeds up really quickly for couple of min then comes back down to normal is that normal?
I started having chest pain, which affects breathing and fatigue after my my 3rd shot of Pfizer Covid Vaccine
Did we know at what tissue temperature did SARS COV2 better replicate? Why? Because at TWiV 659 at min29 virologist Christian Drosten suggest that SARS COV2 better replicate at very low tissue temperature. Did this information modify the way we loock at SARS COV2 infection?
After having Covid, I've had dizziness out of nowhere. I did have a blood clot and still have inflammation in the leg, and now my other leg hurts too, including my feet. Doctors also found a nodule in my left lung.

I got the Covid shot and I don't have myocarditis. Neither does anyone in my family. We all got the shot. Nobody I know has myocarditis. One anti-vaxxer told me that I would be dead in a year from being vaccinated. Two years on I am still alive.

@@Catlily5 No one in my entire family took the shot and we did well. All of us caught Covid at one point and some more than once. No one was severely ill and no one needed emergency assistance. I caught Covid TWICE and both times I cruised right through it. In fact, I've had much worse encounters with the common cold than I did with Covid. I'm happy that you and your family are doing well. But the reason for my comment is because of newly released data proving that the Covid shot has caused myocarditis in many people. And like yourself, I was criticized too. I was called a "conspiracy theorist" by pro-vaxers.

Hi sir, I have been following from quite sometimes longer. I'd like to ask you which blood test can detect the heart disease? Or is there any test that can detect the heart desease rather than ecg, eco or stress test? Thank you
