STORYLINE:
Myanmar's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi met Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo on Thursday during her weeklong visit to Japan.
Suu Kyi's visit has highlighted Japan's interest in tapping Myanmar's potential for economic growth.
Suu Kyi, who is visiting Japan for the first time in 27 years, has been drumming up aid for Myanmar in meetings with Japanese government officials.
She is widely respected in Japan, a place that holds special feelings for the lawmaker and National League for Democracy party leader, who endured nearly two decades of house arrest.
In her busy schedule, she gave speeches at three universities, including in Kyoto, western Japan, where she studied nearly three decades ago.
The handover of power by Myanmar's military junta in 2011 to a nominally civilian government ushered in sweeping political and economic reforms, including releasing prominent political prisoners and allowing Suu Kyi to run in parliamentary by-elections.
As of late February, Japan was the 11th largest investor in Myanmar, with 270 (m) million US dollars in overall investments.
The figure is way behind the 14.2 (b) billion committed by China and 9.6 (b) billion by Thailand, the top two sources with 33 percent and 23 percent respectively of total foreign direct investment.
