MY WORST LANDING EVER

Ғылым және технология

In the video you will hear me mention carb ice, but that was not the case, once I got it back to the hanger, I discovered the pulse line to the fuel pump had come loose. A .29 cent hose clamp and 2 dollar hose is the culprit. Further inspection of the fuel system showed no other evidence of failure. I will dismantle and rebuild TA-1, the engine was not running on impact and shows indication of damage, I have reviewed my flight log and confirmed my altitude was 1800 ft. AGL when the fuel line disconnected and glided approximately 2.5 miles to the field just off to the end of the runway at wolfe airpark. By continually pumping the primer, I was able to keep the engine running however I dont believe it helped extend my glide. There were other possible areas to take advantage of, but I had this field picked as it was well within reach and on the final approach of runway 20 at 3T2. with that said, best case scenario was to make the runway, but I should have made the decision to take the field much sooner. Lesson learned, take the first adequate and available spot and keep the airspeed up, that would have allowed me valuable time to set up a better landing, possibly saving the plane from damage. With that in mind, every engine out is going to be different and our reactions may not be as precise as we think when the time comes. Its nice to save the plane and honestly, I didn't think the landing was going to be as violent as it was, but the ultimate goal is to save the pilot and I was successful in doing that. One final thought, the airplane did exactly what it was supposed to. The plane does not need to be stronger and the gear did not fail as this was not a normal landing. It absorbed the impact and kept me safe inside, a real testament of the Affordaplanes survivability. Its now time to visit the www.affordaplanestore.com and rebuild TA-1

Glad you walked away from it! I know when I was learning to fly UL's my instructor said to always remember to fly the plane. When he would land at the beginning of me taking lessons he would bring the aircraft in dead stick to show I didn't need an engine to land safely and hammer it in to my head to always fly the plane!

You're alive, it was a good landing! Well done for walking away, everyone with foresight can comment at what they would have done, the reality is they weren't there and given the same thing they would have probably had the same outcome if not worse. You controlled the landing and dropped her down with out injury (other than your pride)

Glad you made it down okay. Sorry to see TA-1 so beat up, but at least it's not totaled. Will be interested in what caused the engine failure. It's always a good learning tool to find the root cause which will help others.

YES THEY MUST REDESIGN THE LANDING GEAR BIGGER WHEELS AND SPRINGS OR BUNGEE CORD. AND PUT FLAPS IN THIS AIRCRAFT. FLAPS GIVE LIFT THAT'S WHY THE STOL PLANES LAND AND TAKEOFF SO GOOD.

NOT THE LANDING GEAR IT BROKE BEFORE MUST PUT BETTER LANDING GEAR IN MAYBE FLAPS ALSO THESE AIRCRAFT DOES NOT HAVE FLAPS THAT IS WHAT THEY MUST BRING IN MANUAL FLAPS GIVE MORE LIFT LIKE THE STOL AIRCRAFT. THEN I WILL BUILD ONE OR BUY ONE.

Good job. You know what they say about landings! Got a question because I know nothing about these little planes, but am interested in getting one day. Do they typically need throttle added for landing? Just a curiosity question is all.

You will be back in the air in no time. Great result and disregard the Monday morning quarterbacks, they weren’t there. Good to figure the gear weak points. A little more strength there and possibly more energy absorption capability and there would have been no damage.

I would think carb ice would have given prior warning rough running slower rpm etc. In the video it appeared to just go from running well to dead, if that’s the case I would suspect fuel starvation, trash, air bubble in fuel system etc. Have you done a fuel flow test?
